Charisma Carpenter (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) joins us this week and touches on a jaw dropping story of bravery and survival in an unthinkable situation.
She later opens up on her journey throughout her career, how acting wasnât always her first choice, but how falling into it changed her life forever.
Charisma discusses her anxiety surrounding auditioning for roles, her first time she was truly starstruck, and what itâs been like confronting past traumas during her time on set.
BUFFYâS CHARISMA CARPENTER: BRAVERY & SURVIVAL (2021) Inside of You Podcast w/ Michael Rosenbaum #insideofyou - ZĂĄbava
Happy Tuesday folks đ great convo with Charisma. open book. held back nothing. Who else would you like to see from that Buffyverse?
Everyone
Do you really need me to make you a list? You know I will...donât tempt me. đ
I would love to see Alexis Denisof from Angel and he also voiced The Mirror Master/Sam Scudder in Justice League Unlimited. Maybe J. August Richards aka Charles Gunn, Amy Acker who voiced the Huntress in Justice League Unlimited and played Winfred Burkle/Illyria in Angel. Another actor for sure you have to bring in is Adam Baldwin who voiced Jonah Hex, Hal Jordan and Rick Flag in Justice League Unlimited. In Angel Adam Baldwin played the liaison type character during the final season of Angel and also appeared on Chuck tv series and Firefly. Gina Torres is another actresses you have to get since she was the big bad in season 4 of Angel and voiced Vixen in Justice League Unlimited.
Loving the Buffy guests! Will be happy with any and all.
Alyson Hannigan and SMG
I missed her as Cordelia on Angel. Talk about a character arc. Starting as a high school mean girl to a brave, caring and selfless champion.
Me too. LOVE cordy. Best arc. Top 3 all time favorite buffyverse character for me.
Eric from Time Force, nice.
@@jennyk885 Next to Wesley.
She became a literal God at the end.
The visions change her. Before the visions she was still somewhat bratty even though she has matured alot since buffy season 1.
Dude if you could get David Boreanaz on the podcast that would be insane! Thank you for continuing to give us such lovely insights on amazing people Michael, wish you all the best.
I agree! I would invite him too!
@Nick Bravo What do you mean different versions of himself? Like he is not a good actor? We always see the same person? Like Justin Hartley?
@Nick Bravo What does this even mean lol
Is Keanu a time travelling bozo? the one? a swat dude that takes bombs off buses? ALL OF THOSE?
@op yeah it would be interesting to see David on this podcast, feels like he would have to be real, would be nice to finally know the real him rather than only having rumour to go by, it's a pretty mixed bag when you talk to buffy fans, one thing that stuck with me was apparently David said he was bigger than Angel and didn't really want to look back like the other actors, like say, James.
My own Private Idaho
She played Cordelia so well, and contributed so much to Buffy and Angel.
When Sarah Michelle Gellar spoke out against Joss, in response to Charisma, it spoke volumes. I love the Buffyverse, and when itâs main star doesnât hesitate to speak in support of Charismaâs statement, it was a big deal.
This interview was great but didnât last long enough! We need a part 2!
Guaranteed all these actors hate each other and the only reason anyone is shit talking Joss is because their agent told them it's trendy to attack your bosses right now. All of Carpenter's complaints sound like trivial nonsense and she sounds spoiled. She should try working a real job and see how difficult life actually is.
Other cast members have also come out with bullying allegations (James Marsters, for example)...
@@Unknown-bq9id Wow. Whiny actors are spoiled brats who don't like their boss who tells them what to do. Shocking.
@@blacktionjackson7133 Theres a difference between a boss telling you what to do and being harrassed
@@blacktionjackson7133 Spoken like someone who has harassed a woman or two before.
A very good episode. Charisma talked so well about all her life experiences. What a woman. And there is no way she is 50!!!
Incredible right! Goes to show u once her mental stability matched her health and she lived by her own morals she looks as fantastic as she is courages
Maybe one of the vampires got her.
We watched Buffy and Angel. I used to call her, "My Cordelia". My wife liked James Marsters so it was alright.
If she can play a 13 yr old at 24 yrs old, and a 16yr old at 29yrs old, it's no wonder she's continued to age so well!
There's an expression "you get the face you deserve when you turn 50". She probably didn't smoke, stayed out of the sun, got enough sleep, drank plenty of water. Those things make a big difference.
A thought on Whedon: you can love someone's work and still hate what they do with their fame. The work of a terrible person can bear you up and get you through miserable times, but you can still own the rottenness of the person themselves. You can thank someone for the way their work made you feel, and then also say, "And that's why I know you should know better. It's how I know you could *do* better. So please, do better."
There's a Joss Whedon feminism quote I still love. A journalist asked him why he always focused on having strong women in his stories, and he answered, "Because people still ask me that question." Whedon knows better. He can do better. But whether he does or doesn't, I'll take the good things like that quote and I'll use them for what he *should* be doing.
And one more thing, for those who might feel threatened. Bad behavior is behavior, not identity. You *can* change. You can apologize and do better. That's all that "being better" is: pushing through the fear and shame and changing how you act.
Angel wasn't the same after they wrote her out.
Yeah, Cordelia's ending was wack.
Perhaps if angel had gotten season 6 they could bring cordelia back
It stank then and it stinks even more know we know the truth
It really wasn't. She was the heart and soul of Angel.
yes
Charisma Carpenter is such a wonderful actor. I wish her the best in all she does. I hope there are more Bvts and Angel actors interviewed by Rosenbaum!
I have to be honest, I did not expect her to be so articulate and thoughtful in her responses. Perhaps it is based on the characters she has played. I truly enjoyed this podcast with Charisma and now have a completely different level of respect for her as an actor and person. Thanks Michael
Charisma has the most amazing smile. She just brightens up the room.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are my favorite shows. (Don't worry, Michael, Smallville is great too) Charisma is awesome and I was very sorry to hear what she went through. No one should be treated so horribly. I am glad she came out with her experience . She is a wonderful and courageous person. I wish her all the best.
It's amazing when you're a fan of someone, and not only validate your fandom through their work, but are a really good human being. Charisma is someone that has absolutely deserses our respect and support :)
Reached the end. Great episode. And Charisma is delightful, a lovely person. You're good at getting people to relax and open up to you.
Charisma carpenter is amazing, I have been a fan since the Buffy days!
then you'll dig this ep
@@InsideOfYouPodcast loved you on Smallville! Best Lex Luther! And the show honestly wasn't the same when you were not there! â€
One of my favorite Buffy/Angel actresses. Cordelia going from sassy personality into becoming mature and responsible and a heroine in her own right was an incredible journey for the character. Charisma had said she had auditioned for Buffy Summers during it's initial creation and it would've been interesting had she played Buffy. I always love the What if...scenario.
Yeah, I think Cordelia, as a character, gets the most amount of character development of anyone in the series, except maybe *maybe* Wesley too. Fucking fantastic.
@@SRosenberg203 Wesley Price going from the bumbling watcher to a badass hunter was a quite a transformation.
@@Brook11223 Yeah he's my favorite character in the entire Buffyverse I think.
Her character definitely mirror's the development of Buffy, without becoming the slayer herself, she had to face the vampires and overcome them too.
SMG was originall cast as Cordelia so it's so funny they were considered for opposite roles.
Such an underrated actor. She needs to work more and bigger. Should have been Wonder Woman 15 years ago.
This podcast is incredible. Charisma is a very inspiring woman. It's so nice to hear people we grew up with talking about life issues like everyone else. Remind us that celebrities are normal people with normal issues. She's so down to earth and freaking gorgeous. Michael, it's always a pleasure to listen to you.
But how come Joss Whedon hasn't apologized yet? This is crazy.
Smallville will always be one of the great shows IMO. Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor will always be iconic. Love the podcast.
Omg Michael's dad and my dad were the same! My dad was a USMC gunnery sergeant. He yelled about EVERYTHING. I'm 60 years old now and I will still get angry when someone yells at me. I have zero tolerance for being yelled at.
Always had a huge crush on her as a teenager. What a lovely woman - she's been through so much and is just amazing.
Aww I love her and anyone who knows me, knows Buffy is my number one fandom. Looking forward to hearing your chat and learning more about her as a person. She seems like a very smart, well spoken woman.
well said. hope you enjoy :)
I remember my dad taking me out for my first driving lesson. Afterwards he said "I'm really disappointed in you"
That is so mean
That's... that's horrifying. Were you able to stay calm in the next lessons? Brush it off?
â€ïžCharisma my favorite Buffy character ever.. introduced my daughters to the show and both agreed she was the best. The character development of Cordelia was amazing and Charisma brought so much to the role obviously â€ïž
At 45:08 I love that she talks about how a character is equally co-created by both the writing and the actor.
So glad this beautiful, courageous, smart and talented woman agreed to come on. She is an inspiration to us all. I know how much I have enjoyed chatting with her and can only imagine the wonderful and entertaining chat you two will have. Canât think of a better way to start my day đâ€ïž. Hope you have an amazing week Rosey and thank you again for another amazing episode đđ»â€ïžđ
thank you for being amazing by supporting :)
@@InsideOfYouPodcast you make it easy by producing this amazing podcast every week đâ€ïž
I loved this episode. I really liked her in the Buffy and Angel shows and a few other things, but I didn't really watch interviews or anything like that. I love how straightforward she is with what she says. Honestly one of my fave eps
I know Charisma will never see this but I would like her to know that as someone who lived and breathed Buffy/Angel and bowed at the feet of Joss Whedon it is not you we are mad at. He is the one that disappointed us, not you, Sarah, Michelle or any other cast members. If Joss did anything right he helped show us the beauty and power of women and made us into a group of fans that is all about female empowerment even if the man who taught us that was nothing but a sheep in wolves clothing who didn't practice what he preached.
I loved Cordelia. The story about her sons teacher hugging her was so endearing.
Holy $#!t she is 50!?!?!? Wow! Stunning! Great job Rosey! đ
ikr, she doesn't even look passed 30's
When she said she was 50 at the beginning I nearly spit out my beer and (out loud) said "She is not f*****g 50." (In case you needed additional vindication for the last little bit of conversation).
Cordelia meets Lexđ and Omg 50 and Still a bomb shell! Another amazing episode Michael đđ€
Thank you both for this conversation, actor to actor and friend to friend. Whatâs great about this podcast show bringing in figures I essentially grew up watching on TV and idolizing (both the character and celebrity) is that I finally get to see them as humans, too and in their own words. Which is a rare treat and also so therapeutic & comforting, especially right now. đđ€đ„â€ïž
Hearing those opening chords alone improve my day.
I love her. She is such a strong and kind person.
Iâm presenting on Slayers: A Buffyverse Story in a couple of weeks at the Southwestern Popular Culture Conference (SWAPACA) and I came back here to verify information.
Cordelia is the Slayer.
I identified with Cordelia as much as I did with Buffy. And Iâve only had so much love and respect for Charisma, and she expresses in this interview the qualities I am focusing on as heroic in Cordelia, which influenced and informed that character, and me as a person.
I love Charisma! Really appreciated this interview. I was too young to understand what was going on when Angel was on air but knew season 4 was disgusting and such a disrespectful treatment of an amazing character. Knowing what was happening at the time later, I have such deep respect for Charisma for speaking up. She did it not for herself but to support someone else. Knowing that it could alienate so many fans but still doing the right thing just speaks volumes of her as a person. I will always be a fan of Charisma. đ
There are entire...almost dissertations online I've read about the destruction of Cordelia Chase in Season 4 and they're worth the read. You could tell she was actually pregnant at the time so even though I was young, I figured they had done what they did to include her actual pregnancy, but it was so wrong and now knowing what was happening adds yet another layer to it all. At least she got a proper send-off in the final season.
@@darianrose2195 Completely agree! How they wrote Cordelia in season 4 was very gross and disturbing. Although Cordelia had a nice send-off storyline in Season 5, Charisma has shared this in other interviews that she was also tricked into doing it. She didn't want to come back if they would just kill off her character. After they promised her they wouldn't do that and she signed the contract, she got the script and learned Cordy was being killed off. She was such a professional and still completed filming for the fans, but every time I learn more about the dynamics behind the scenes, it makes me so sad. Charisma is the real hero here for her strength and resilience.
I totally agree and knowing what we do about the things that went on it makes sense. They couldnât fire her so tried in my opinion to drive her out instead. I am so proud of her for being so brave and how the other cast members supported her and didnât let the fact it could damage their careers get in the way of the truth.đđđđđđ
Michael: another excellent podcast. You have a special gift for making your guests feel comfortable opening up and I learn something every time. Ms. Carpenter is clearly a very good human being and mother. To all the people amazed at how good she looks at 50; aside from her great genes, she has taken great care of herself. We all can be the best versions of ourselves if we eat well, exercise, avoid toxic substances and people in our lives; and balance ourselves spiritually and mentally. Iâm 51 and in some of the best shape of my life by doing the above, despite 2 tours in combat. Iâm happy both of them appear to be in good places in their lives.
Finally. I have been asking for you to interview her for while. Can't wait to hear it right now.
It's so good to hear that artists used to do some shitty jobs, too. đ€Łđ€Ł I'm happy I'm not the only one.
Thank you, Rosey. Excellent episode!
haha definitely not alone
@@InsideOfYouPodcast
And you're not the only one who was yelled at during some driving practice with a manual gear stick. đ€Łđ€Ł One could have a trauma from this experiment.
Good lord! How is she even more gorgeous these days then back in the Buffy/Angel days? :D Lovely person and great actress!
I have always loved Charisma as a hugely talented and underrated actor and this has just confirmed everything Iâve ever thought. But to find out so much more about her is just an honour. She is a strong brave and inspirational human and to have survived all of the things she has is amazing. I canât believe she is older than me her face shines with intelligence and inner beauty. I hope one day soon we live in a world where all races creeds colours and sexual identities are no longer an issue and the labels placed on us are not an issue or needed. Long may she be around and I wish her all the luck and love in the world.
Really excited for this one!! Charisma was so sweet when some of us got to do that round table zoom with you and her. Can't wait to hear what stories she will share with you. Thank you so much for asking my question. Keep up the awesome work as always Michael. You are seriously killing it every week. Have a wonderful week and Happy Tuesday đ

Sheâs just all class isnât she? I loved this, such an open and honest chat between the two of you. I always come away from these with a smile. Sending much love from the uk, hope to see you at a con here soon!
What a great episode. I didnât know who charisma was prior to watching this episode. Itâs great to learn about somebody different and realise that they have the same sort of struggles that is ordinary people have. Keep doing what you do Rosey and crew
Had a huge crush on her as kid but wasnât through Buffy though. Amazing woman and thanks Rosey for giving us the best content out there đđđ
I don't think I've ever met someone as personable and genuine as you Michael! Love this series Inside Of You, and I know the film/Tv nerd in you must absolutely love getting to talk
to all these talented people and some of your peers. From an Aussie fan! Love this one with Charisma :)
Open, honest exchanges! Really enjoyed this. It's not all bunch of fluff or trying to get the gossip. Refreshing.
What a brilliant interview. So open and honest. She looks great.
Another wonderful Tuesday with Rosey. The openness expressed here is always needed and heard. #alwaysappreciated â€ïž To a world that needs to simply be more real with one another, watch Rosey!
C.C. Is so interactive. Sheâs such a lady.
And I really like this show. Iâm so glad this show exist.
Cordelia Chase is one of my favorite characters of all time, and I love Charisma Carpenter. Loved this, amazing once more, as usual.
Rosie....That anxiety you feel is what makes you such an effective actor bro... Even just overcoming it is a feat itself, especially in your industry. That anxiety is always there to push you....I have the same issue, feels like a massive hinderance, until you realize it's actually a substantial driving force to become better
Alyson and Amy would be my top two.
Then SMG, then get Freddie on and you two will become the bestest of friends!
Eliza would be great as well. Thatâs your next five episodes. Please
I used to watch Buffy and Angel for one person mainly- Charisma..She was a huge crush of the teenage me. Still a beautiful woman.Thank you Mr. Rosenbaum
Her son's friends definitely LOVE coming over lol.
I grew up in the 90s Buffy Angel they were my shows I loved and obsessed over I watched Blue Bloods and Chrisma Carpenter was in an episode. She look soo grown-up still the same as when she was Cordelia
These episodes are the highlight of my week!
Iâm feeling sorry for her and rest of her friends being treated differently by Joss. I honestly didnât know whatâs going on. Itâs breaking my heart to hear oneâs of my heroes being harassment, or abuse and toxic by Joss. I hope they keep their heads up as their family depends on them. They deserve better than Joss. Iâm big fan of Buffy tv show and Angel tv show because of her and rest of her friends.
Thank you for this interview. Keep up the good work.

Charisma seems really sweet and genuine. She doesn't look 50! The more I hear actors talk about their profession the more I respect them. I don't think many people could do what they do. Thanks Michael.

Bravo Charisma! I enjoy watching you and Mike. You guys are awesome.
I think it may have been True Lies Ms. Carpenter was referring to with Eliza Dushku and Arnold Schwarzenegger not Last Action Hero. Great episode. How about Amy Acker on the show?
Darnit, I always get curious and click to hear a few quick quotes or something juicy. Yet I always .. every darn time, stay for the whole thing. You're probably the easiest podcaster to listen to by far.
Dude as far as judging without getting to know you I'll be honest I thought you guys were so intimidating and that I would have nothing to say to anyone in you're guys line of work. That there might be an air of "I'm better than you" but this show has shown me that we have so much in common. Like I feel like you guys are so down to earth and relatable I could actually chill with you guys and I had a very wrong idea. So this has been a lesson in humility for me too thanks Michael.
