My Tesla Road Trip Emergency Kit:
    1. 100 Foot 10 Gauge Wire Extension cord (to use with Tesla Mobile Connector). Let's you reach a 120v outlet up to 125 Feet away.
    2. 25 Foot Lectron NACS Extension Cord for Level 2 chargers that might be ICE'd.
FYI this extension cord also works with Tesla's Mobile Connector with any of the 120 volt and 240-volt pigtails.
    3. Modern Spare Tire Kit with Jack and Wrenches.
    4. Cordless 20v Impact Driver with 21mm Deep Impact Socket for changing tires the easy way.
Remember to keep the charger for the battery in your tool bag with the impact wrench!
    5. Extendable 12"-24" Breaker Bar to loosen up stubborn lug nuts. Also a good backup if you forgot to charge up the cordless impact driver's battery before the trip.
    6. Torque Wrench to make sure the lug nuts are put back on at 130 Foot Pounds so they don't come loose.
    7. Tesla CCS adapter to use on 3rd party chargers, AND Tesla's Mobile Connector Adapter Kit so you can use any 120v/240v Outlet in North America.
This will give you the opportunity in an emergency to rent a parking spot at a trailer park and charge overnight with the shore power hookup outlet.
You can sleep in the car with Camp Mode on and you have access to a restroom / shower building while the car charges up.
If you are creative like me you could come up with an interesting solution with all of these connectors.
Especially when you wake up like me with a 5% SOC on your car at a friend's house because you forgot to charge up the car the night before you got there. 🤦‍♂️
To make matters worse the nearest supercharger was 58 miles away. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
I used the adapter kit with my mobile connector (with one of the 240 volt pigtails) to plug into my friend's dryer Outlet at his house.
I ran the Mobile Connectors Cord out the window and used my Lectron Level 2 25-Foot Extension Cord to reach my car in his driveway to charge. The two cords combined gave me about 50 foot of length.
    8. AAA's top tier Membership which covers towing up to 250 miles. Tesla's roadside assistance does not cover far enough IMHO.
    9. Useful Apps on Phone like: A Better Route Planner, Plugshare, ChargePoint, EVgo Charger, Electrify America.
Setup accounts with all the 3rd party charger companies AHEAD OF TIME so you don't have to fuss with it on the road.
    10. Three-Pack of LED Emergency Flare Pucks that are USB-C Rechargeable.
You can get them on Amazon in a nice little carrying case and you can recharge them in the car as well. They are visible from a FAR distance at night!
    11. A couple of 2x6 Wood Planks about two feet long to drive up onto with your flat tire.
This will raise up the flat tire/rim enough so you can get the Jack underneath the car.
EV's sit lower to the ground, and the wood planks will raise it enough so you can get the jack under the car.
    12. A Set of Four Jack Rubber Pucks. These look like a hockey puck made out of rubber with a center section that sticks up to go into the hole underneath the jacking points on a Tesla.
These are absolutely necessary to jack up the vehicle! Without them you risk a jack slipping and damaging your high voltage battery pack!
Needless to say that would be a super expensive mistake! 💸💸💸💸
This is in addition to normal emergency supplies you should have in your vehicle. I mainly wanted to cover all of the ones that relate to a EV that you may not have thought of.
Advice from a Professional CDL driver with 1,000,000+ Miles of experience. 😉

I've done 7 long distance trips and I have learned (the hard way) to always select hotels that within 5-10 minutes of a supercharger.

    • @iowatesla
      @iowatesla  Před měsícem

We don't generally say more than 50-60 miles from the next Supercharger. It does require a little more planning - especially when it's cold.

I select hotels that are nice and affordable. In my Camry, I can buy gasoline anywhere.

    • @LordTimelord
      @LordTimelord Před dnem

@@DerekDavis213 Deals can be found, even for more expensive hotels. For example, I stayed at a Hampton Inn for only $55 with a discount card.
They also had two free Tesla destination chargers at the hotel. So I charged all night for free. I set the battery to charge to 100% so I could maximize the next leg of my trip.
Total of 1,250 Miles of driving for only $110 (mix of free supercharging, third party DC chargers, and cheap charging at relatives homes) for the the whole trip.
EV's are roughly 1/3 the cost when paying for the DC fast Chargers. When charging at home, I'm at 1/5 the cost ($0.06 kWh/Night, $0.09 kWh Day rates).
That's cheaper than my 2013 Chevy Spark, which was replaced by my 2023 model y long range.
Although the topic of insurance is a different discussion as EV's are way more expensive to insure!

Really cool to see the footage from the drone at Cape Girardeau. That stop is only a couple years old and I'm pretty sure they're V3 chargers. I drive by it a dozen times a week. 😁
The utilization has sure gone up it seems in the last year. Easy stop literally at the exit ramp. Only bummer is the gas station closes around 10pm so bathroom and snacks aren't available for late night travelers. The sc is of course still good after that, just no amenities.

Enjoy all Tesla content. I am on "the fence"about getting a Model Y.
On my cross country trips, now in a Lexus GX460, I start with a full tank and stop onece. Typically around 650 miles. Teslas Need A LOT of stops and time for charging....

Maybe get a plug-in hybrid. I think Lexus offers one. Edit: they offer a TX Plug-In hybrid.
I know you will miss the quality and feel of a Tesla if you switch. My family has a 2012 RX350 and it is a wonderful car. Heated and Vented seats work better than those in more modern cars. It has large mirrors, it is very quiet, smooth, etc.

    • @LordTimelord
      @LordTimelord Před měsícem +1

I bought a MY LR in December 2023. I've been averaging about 280 MI of range.
This is at 70MPH speed, with the AC Cranked on High Output, and the 600Watt Stereo System jamming the tunes.
Most of my supercharging stops from 20% to 80% have taken about 25 minutes on the 250 KW Chargers.
Very comfortable car IMHO. Under 80 mph its handling is superb. The cars weight faster than that makes itself known quickly! Also it has a ton of storage inside! 👍
I have a modern spare tire in my model y. However the storage area underneath is not big enough to hold the tire.
I rigged up a strap system that utilizes the child seat anchors on the back of the rear seats to make sure the spare tire won't fly around in an accident.
The Modern Spare (it's Jack and wrenches fit in the middle of the rim) includes a nice heavy-duty cover to keep it from getting the inside of your car dirty.

Autopilot barely makes a dent in battery usage.
The stereo system uses the most power from my observations. Especially when cranked up loud as it's a 600-watt system.
The air conditioning would be second in energy usage.
Really the only time the computer uses quite a bit of battery is when you have Sentry mode running with the car parked, and it has to keep all eight cameras powered up and recording.

No charger at hotel = he left on a cold soaked battery.
With the car starting preconditioning with a cold soaked battery at the hotel when he left.
I doubt it had time to get fully warmed up before he got to the supercharger.
That definitely would have impacted his charging speed.

At 0.54 , so many charging stops required.
In my Toyota Camry, I can make a 1000 mile trip with just two 5-minute stops at the gas station.
My Camry has Traffic Aware Cruise Control. I drive the car, but don't have to hold the gas pedal down for 16 hours.
