  • The Toyota Landcruiser has gained itself quite the reputation over the years as a very reliable and sturdy vehicle. That can not only tow heavy loads with ease but can also do it in comfort. The Toyota Landcruiser also got itself the reputation for being extremely capable off road pretty much straight out of the box.
    However does the 200 series Landcruiser up hold this reputation or is it one of the models that couldn't quite fill the shoes? In this video i go through some of the issues with the Vdj200 with the 1vdftv fitted and some of the things you should be aware of before putting down the decent price tag to land one of these cruisers.

    Just did the 350k service on my 2008 VX. Original owner, original injectors, turbos etc. I have not experienced any of the problems spoken about here. HPD catch can and intercooler, TC lockup kit and ECU tune. Vehicle has been used extensively for heavy towing its whole life. Have replaced radiator and water pump at first indication of age and wear. I anticipate this vehicle being I my garage for a long time to come.

    Thanks mate great info my LC200 2017 only 40k on the clock ,change the fuel filter every 10 k fitted quality catch can. I check air filter often on outback roads & replace with genuine filters. I am still paranoid about potential dusting am going to replace the airbox with a Donaldson PowerCore, they are expensive but what price do you put on a 30k engine . Have you heard much about the Donaldson airbox?.

      I haven’t heard to much about the Donaldson airbox’s, However Donaldson are very well known for making good quality products. The airbox’s i have dealt with is the Patrol doctor Gsl fab, moonlight fab airbox’s and they all seem to do as they claim.

    What's your recommendation for KMs and injector replacements?

    • @DaSpedza
      @DaSpedza  Před rokem +1

      150k-200k is when they’re recommended to be replaced however ive seen them go way longer than that without an issue. Majority of the time is comes down to what type of life they get ie bad batch of fuel,contamination over time etc. Tell tail signs without doing tests on feedback values and bleed off tests etc. You’ll notice an increase in fuel consumption as well as like a ball bearing type rattle louder than normal when the engine in cold under acceleration. Plus white smoke isn’t uncommon either.

    Hi mate,
    Thinking of buying 2011 200.
    250 000kms on it. Never really been off road, and always serviced on time, and one owner lady, used for school bus.
    Really worried about the fuel injectors, plus never had a manifold inlet clean. Diesel engine obviously. Any thoughts? Plus I think it has a ever slight oil build up, not even like a leak. at the rear main seal at gearbox.
    Thank you in advance.

    • @DaSpedza
      @DaSpedza  Před 2 lety +3

      Hey mate,
      You’re right to be concerned about the injectors and the intake especially if it’s done alot of short school run trips.
      The injectors do have a recommended service interval to be replaced however that’s normally preventative maintenance and ive seen them go for many km’s no issues at all.
      For the injectors to be sure I’d recommend getting it checked out by a shop they’ll do leak back tests aswell as a few other checks including feedback vaules to see if the injectors are still within spec which is normally +-3.0 mm3/st you’ll normally hear if they’re out of spec however feedback values are only a small part of inspecting them. If you can’t get it into a shop, A way to get some idea if they’re bad or not is when you drive it especially cold it’ll have a real loud clack noise to it be harsh with idle and lack of power along with white smoke 💨 upon acceleration.
      I would count on having to do an intake clean if you get it. 250k it’ll have some build up especially if it hasn’t had a catch can installed.
      As for the leak or stains around the bell housing First check that it isn’t an old grease stain due to excess grease being flicked off the front tail shaft on the left hand side.
      Also check the turbo lines you’ll be able to see them with a light climbing under the vehicle and looking around the bell housing. There’s a rubber hose and some metal lines with banjo bolts. But the rear main could still be a concern.
      I hope this helps.

    Hey mate, what about black soot issues, what are your thoughts on this?

    • @DaSpedza
      @DaSpedza  Před rokem +1

      It depends how much black soot. If it’s just a puff here and a couple puffs there under load or giving it a bit. That’s fine. For the non dpf models. However if it has dpf’s and is doing this then either the dpf’s require a burn off,they’re not working correctly or the injectors aren’t right.
      For the non dpf models if it’s excessive amounts of black smoke. First I’d ask whether or not it’s been tuned or had a chip installed. If the answer is yes remove the chip and see if the issue is still there or get it re tuned as it’s running way to rich.
      If it hasn’t had a tune and is stock. Id look at intake mostly the air filter being blocked not providing enough air, Also check the maf, map and ect sensors if thats all fine then intake manifold for being built up with carbon they can cause excessive black smoke and also injectors however most of the time when injectors begin to leak or have irregular spray patterns on the non dpf models it produces white/grey smoke. In short however.
      Excessive Black smoke is an indication of its running rich.

      G'day, I bought a LC200 Sahara in Feb 2011 new 39km on clock, gave it a 2 inch lift ... it now has 420,000km original CV axles with thousands of km off road (not rock climbing) i changed water pump at 320,000km, aluminium intercooler had minor fatigue crack at about 380,000km that showed signs of oil weep with very minor power loss, i drove it like that for 2 years, only noticed power improvement when i replaced intercooler. I still get 11.8 - 13L/100 with original injectors, i suspect one or two injectors are a little noisier that the rest and plan to renew sometime 2023, never top up oil between changes at every 10k km, i do all my own services, the LC200 your'e looking at with 182k km is like new

    Hey mate, thinking of buying a 2008 GXL diesel with 500,000kms with new injectors already installed. Has done mostly country runs and holidays towing caravans.
    Its under 40k and pretty much original except rear lift for towing.
    Thoughts?

    • @DaSpedza
      @DaSpedza  Před rokem +2

      I would be hesitant.
      And the reason i say that as it is a 2008 model plus the amount of Km’s
      500,000km’s is around the average life expectancy out of the VDJ due to the piston design. Not to say you can’t get a lot more km’s out of them however 500,000 is where i have seen a lot of them die even when very well maintained.
      So the car maybe cheap however if it does drop a motor in the next 12months or so you’ll be up for a lot more. Which that on top of the initial price of the car. I’d just find one well looked after with lower Km’s and pay a bit more for it. Hope this helps.

      As far as I’m aware the petrol variant’s are pretty bullet proof.
      The only dealings I’ve had with them is just general servicing and the occasional coil
      pack or fuel pump other than that they just keep going.

    Can i ask at what mileage does this all happen.
    I have a one owner 08 gxl...it is now 2023..
    All seems fine at this stage.
    235000 km.
    Is it a hand granade waiting to explode.
    Done a shit load of off road driving and towing.
    So are all these well known issues going to hit me at once.
    Seeing as they are all well known issues.

    • @DaSpedza
      @DaSpedza  Před rokem +1

      The intake clogging up happens normally around 100k depending on driving etc. normally short trips accelerates the carbon production.
      If you’ve had it serviced or have taken it to Toyota over the years you’ll find they would have changed a lot of those faulty parts when the service bulletins came through eg turbo oil feed lines etc.
      The intercooler can happen at any point you’ll just notice a stain.
      Cv’s can happen at any point due to wear and tear or driving style.
      Injectors is something that can go at any point you just have to keep an eye on them.
      I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a hand grenade if you’ve had no problems with an 08 model that’s great you may have got one of the good ones.
      Hope this helps.

      Hey mate,
      I know it’s a silly question but is your A/C or climate control on? Rpm fluctuations like that with the A/C on is common.
      If the A/C isn’t causing the rpm issue it’ll be very had to diagnose without seeing the vehicle.
      My best bet would be take it to a diesel specialist. MTQ are pretty good from what I’ve heard. Ultimate Diesel is another one.
