Watching this 7 years later, i adore this series, even the older ones are surprisingly timeless. the seamless transition from the Apple press show to Single White Female was hilarious and ingenious
I'm glad someone appreciated the Single White Female bit. I had very few viewers back then, and did it mostly for my own entertainment. In retrospect, I'm thinking an average viewer stumbling across the video might be confused by that part. Thanks, Patrick, for the message and thanks for coming back to watch the videos over again.
I had one of these. It was my first computer back in 97. I had purchased it through a friend. I had no clue how to even turn a computer on before getting one of these.
Oh gawd, yes I remember those old microphones. My Dad wouldn't let me stick the holder onto the computer. Smart man. I'm pretty sure I recorded an album of my guitar-playing on this microphone, and then later on I recorded another one on a Plaintalk microphone.
I had a IIsi 5MB with FP coprocessor card. I replaced the 20 MHz crystal with a 25 MHz one - ran perfectly. For its time it was quite a decent machine, certainly better than the average Dosbox with Windows 3.1. Earned its keep.
This is the first Mac I never used. My new girlgriend (later wife) had just bought one with her student discount. We had the matching Trinitron monitor and she also got an Apple LaserWriter NTR and an Apple OneScanner. I loved that Apple Extended Keyboard II "aircraft carrier"! We had the 2G version but did upgrade the RAM later. We added a SCSI CD-ROM drive even later. We started with the original release of System 7 and followed it up through Mac OS 7.3 when we sold it. This is what we founded our Desktop Publishing/Graphic Design home business (back when that was still a Thing). It's the only Mac I have ever earned money with. I loved that little machine!
I agree, definitely one of my favorites, too. "Aircraft carrier"... I recall those extended keyboards having a nickname back in the day, but I could never remember. I think that was it! Great to hear about your history with the machine. Thanks for sharing that!
I spent many hours on our IIsi, playing Armor Alley, Oids, (Beyond) Dark Castle, Sim City 2000, Sim Ant, Bolo, and a ton of share ware games. Also I had ResEdit, which I used to modify lots of those games text and graphics to great humorous effect (flying guy instead of a helo in Armor Alley, etc). Good times. And yes, I remember the sound recording capability distinctly. It was amazing at the time. 10:23 yes, that is what I did. I was 13 or 14 at the time and the machine was a bit dated at that point and not dad's main machine anymore (this was 93 or 94). Also had it maxed out at 17MB RAM. I never got the co-processor. And yes it did have the sound issues you mentioned.
The LC was a bit behind the IIsi. For this reason, the si had a discrete 8-bit sound input circuit whereas the LC's sound input (the 2nd Mac with sound input) had an integrated sound solution. After the LC, all the Macs going forward featured sound input.
My elementary school had a Apple portrait display in the administration office. The rest of the stock Apple dumped from old stock was normal Apple displays
An alternate theory I've heard about the "si" moniker is that this machine was, in fact, part of the "Elsie" project at Apple, which produced the LC, IIsi and Classic. Elsie. IIsi. Elsie. IIsi. See?
Interesting! That's a different way to look at it. I had looked fairly deep into it and only found one reference to the 'si' meaning "sleek, integrated video". I would have liked to have had at least two sources from the time saying that. But it is consistent with their IIcx and IIci naming. So, I wouldn't rule out the 'Elsie' theory either. I have many happy memories of my Mac IIsi. It's funny to think just how much work I managed to get done with that Mac, and the relatively tiny monitor that I had at the time.
I had a Mac IIsi from 1990 to 1997! I made an album using a mod tracker called 'Meditor' over that time and released it to the world last year. It's called 'Weinermart' by me... It was my teenage project to keep me sane! You can listen to it on CZcams or most other streaming services too. I actually got a PDS co-processor card in 1995 but never knew that it needed software to work and never noticed a difference in installing it.

13:00 implies the existence of a second Macintosh IIsi in the stash - how else would we be seeing a second fan? :) I have one of these here today to restore. I was so struck by the beautiful design and build of the machine, I was tempted to make some sort of crude slideshow video - but then I had a hazy memory that it had already been covered, and indeed, it has. I do have a few more tasks though, cleaning the oily mess from the power connector and replacing the caps inside the power supply, as well as the eleven identical surface-mount 47uF caps on the logic board. Again, beautiful design and a perfect tribute video by 65Scribe. In the meantime, I’d better get going - restoring the case in early autumn means I have to “make grey while the sun shines”. Have a happy day
Other than the Apple II and ... probably Classic in school, the IIsi and Quadra 700 were the first Macs I messed with. Given I'd been building my own PCs (and had the sliced fingers from the cases to show for it,) the toolless cases were like a gift from heaven. Person who gave me the IIsi wasn't even sure what it was, it was just in his basement. Kind of became a favourite of mine.
I wish I could walk into your personal museum, peruse your collection, and walk out with 1 or 2 of your Macs. I've never been a Mac user, but I do admire their designs. I wish I could get my hands on a G4 Cube, a Mac Classic, and a LC III. I don't actually have anything to use them for, but as a collector of other things I know that they don't _need_ to be useful to be desirable and admirable.
Probably. He had left his day-to-day job with Apple in 1983, although he supposedly still gets a paycheck to this day. He was always an Apple II guy, the Macintosh was the antithesis of what he thought computers should be.

@@65scribe No worries! Most people aren't even aware that there was a difference in the vertical. Turns out the 12" B&W Display was 640x480. Why they messed with the DPI in both directions with the 12" monitors is beyond me, considering how they tried to keep close to the 72DPI with their other monitor sizes, AFAIK. That is, until they gave in to the PC-driven multisync revolution (the AGA Amigas had multisync monitors, as well).
The 240 volt ”displays”, at least the Trinitron and the 12” RGB witch I own, does not have the power cord fixed. Every 110 volt one seems to have it though.
I bought one of these with 4mb RAM which was a lot of money at the time, then I found a quadra 900 in a skip with x4 4mb memory and the simms had the same footprint, so I upgraded for absolutely no cost. It was still dead slow though.

I have a Macintosh II si fully working, kept for all these years in it's original boxes ( where it is also right now ) , with the computer I also have the RGB Monitor and the laser printer, everything fully working.... Does anyone know how much I can ask for it ??

The word 'sleek' seemed to be a popular adjective at that point in time, if you do a word search on the mac magazines, it's in ads and articles way more than you'd see today. As for the 'i', that's well documented as 'integrated video' to differentiate the cx (which needed a video card) and the ci and si.
That’s great! In the majority of cases the ROM will be on the board and you won’t need the SIMM. Higher risk that the Power or Hard Drive or Floppy won’t work. I would say if you see oil on the board from the caps, it should be washed before attempting to turn it on. Those are a few things off the top of my head. Good luck with it.
@@65scribe Thanks! Got the cap goo washed off and I will get my hands on some ADB stuff and a monitor eventually. The drive spins up and the floppy doesn't make any noise, but I didn't want to test things too vigorously with bad caps on the board.

Between the integrated CD-ROM drive and QuickTime, playing video on your computer would have been a big selling feature. I could be totally wrong. It was the coolest sounding suffix to me even if the Mac itself was a flop.

I wonder what this thing is worth though. There is a seller on ebay, refurbishing them with things like SD2SCSI, and selling them for nearly a grand. Yes, people keep buying it for that price, he's got several completed listings.
That's true. Macintosh IIfx is well known as the most expensive mac ever, so collectors have been attracted to it for a long time. As a result, they are hard to find and the asking price is relatively high due to demand. Good for you finding one in the dumpster. Clean it up and hang on to it!
That's unfortunate. The power supply tends to die on these more often than other old Macs. I've got a few dead ones too. I keep thinking that one day I'll figure out how to fix them.
In the day the IIsi was something of a joke because it was cheap and underpowered and crappily built. It was considered a cheap replacement for the IIci/IIcx but was nowhere near as nice and only accepted one NuBus card on a crappy cheap riser that fell out all the time. The BIGGEST problem with Macs were their highly unreliable operating system (before OS X). 2nd was trying to drive the video using the CPU. 68k cpus were way too slow for that.
I don't think there was much choice. Operating Systems were all either unreliable or difficult to navigate back then. And yes, trying to skimp on video ram was a bad idea.

I'm looking to get one of these, but I plan on tricking it out. First on the list is a replacement oscillator to bring it to 25MHz instead of 20MHz.
And I ended up getting one! Damned holidays made it get stuck for a few days though.
The biggest problem this machine had was the crappy riser which was always loose and fell out all the time, shorting whatever NuBus card was in it.
If you still didn't get one I have one ( fully working kept in the original boxes woth the RGB Monitor and the laser printer)

In the day the IIsi was something of a joke because it was cheap and underpowered and crappily built. It was considered a cheap replacement for the IIci/IIcx but was nowhere near as nice and only accepted one NuBus card on a crappy cheap riser that fell out all the time.

The BIGGEST problem with Macs were their highly unreliable operating system (before OS X).
2nd was trying to drive the video using the CPU. 68k cpus were way too slow for that.
I don't think there was much choice. Operating Systems were all either unreliable or difficult to navigate back then. And yes, trying to skimp on video ram was a bad idea.
