18:45 Just to elaborate on Sucharita's point, sex, especially exploiting female sexuality in horror films has been one of the most intrinsic part the genre from its earlier days in Hollywood. This was partly done for moralistic reasons. Because Horror films were mostly consumed by teenagers and early 20s audience, they would use an oversexualized character - almost always a woman - and then that character would always be the first one die [Black would be the next to die]. By this way, they could associate that behavior automatically something that would lead to and deserves punishment. This sort of portrayal helped a lot of people get away with censorship as most of the jury people would be devout catholic. This trope has now almost diminished. One of the better horror films 'It Follows' pays homage to this trope by having a teenage girl in hot-pants and high heels, scared to death, running away from some unknown entity. Whereas 'Cabin in the Wood', a fantastic chamber-meta-horror film outright calls out on this and many other such tropes.
We have been using that trope since Ramsay brother's days and haven't evolved at all. But which genre have we evolved in for that matter?

And I'd love to know if you've made any short films and where I can see them. Moreover I'd really like to know what are your thoughts about short films in general and if you had to give some advice who also wants to do similar work then what would it be. Alot of questions, I apologise.

People impressed with Vidya and Bhool Bhulayya should give the original Malayalam version "Manichithrathaazhu" a chance. Shobhana, plays the female lead, and Vidya pales in comparison with her. Shobhana even bagged that year's National Award for her performance for that character 'Nagavally'. 'Manichithrathaazhu' and 'Nagavally' still remains one of Malayalam's most iconic ever and has taken it's permanent place in Malayalam culture.

Beg to differ, but again she won the national award for the best actress award that year (and again in 2002 for a different film) so I am not the only one who thinks she was good. And I have read the director of that movie, Fazil, saying that many shots of her possessed scenes in the climax where captured when they were taking breaks in between shots because she was in character all the time. And remember original movie came out in 1993 and Hindi version in 2007. That time gap should be considered when evaluating the two movies and performances.

Horror and sex have always been mixed together by Hollywood filmmakers from the olden times. Don't always blame Indian filmmakers for everything. Bad horror films are everywhere. Take a ratio of good and bad horror films from Hollywood and it won't be any different from the ratio back here. The reason why Indian cinema doesn't make too many horror films is that India has never been a genre-centric industry. The filmmakers & audience in India are used to blending various genres into one; Masala as you guys call it. We have our own way of making & enjoying films; cant imitate Hollywood all the time.

Music plays a huge part in narrative and sales in Indian films, I think they need to find the right balance of having songs that add a tone of creepiness to the film rather than romances. They should explore other relationships like parents-child, siblings or something like IT where it's among kid friendships.

Anupama chopra discussing movies like a pro!! Such a sweet lady ,no doubt about that but,If I am not an engineer and would be giving a lecture about engineering at a school ..would people still buy it? Why is there no credibility with the people representing indian cinema? One of the true reasons why we make average movies is because majority people(the faces who represent or make the most money) are not trained(qualified enough) ,neither are good at what they do , love for cinema does not come from passion in film making it comes from a family lineage and greed for money and greed for just their own good and their kin's well being)! So to say Bloodlines!!..they just steal content and become famous! hence, become stars..not normal human beings doing their jobs but gods walking amongst humans..with egos the size of continents.and then their sons and daughters..and so on so forth!!
cinema is the real loser here when the face representing it is itself questionable??Imagine the bridges an engineer with faulty degree will make..and now imagine indian cinema!!..although not everyone is like that but i speak for the majority! It is time we take cinema to be a serious art form..a subject as important as engg.or medicine..and create the right opportunities for people to pursue cinema by getting the correct knowledge..required! like the iit s and iims for other subjects and sciences..and I am talking about not the mere 1 or 2 good institutions but rather 1 or 2 in every state of our great country of India..with correct knowledge and discipline we will soon stand out in the world in the field of film making ..but for now it is more like a family business where the real talent rarely gets seen or pushed ..and the majority money goes to cast assholes who clearly belong to (Edit: Film Frat ) families and claim to be outsiders all their lives!!..Have a happy married life Ranveer singh!

Hey there ye Three! I'm a big fan of your FC conversations, being a filmi keeda myself.
Now with the topic of Horror films, and after watching your latest upload, I must concur that Mr. Desai and Ms. Chopra missed out on quite a bit(Ms. Tyagi I shall avoid as she herself confessed to not seen too many horror flicks)
There have been some exceptionally bone chilling scary horror movies to have come out of Bollywood-- maybe lost in the tide of time.
When you guys spoke of RGVs 'Bhoot' as the probably the best horror movies of recent times, here's a little backstory. Post Shiva, RGV made a horror movie called 'Raat' starring Ms. Revathi , Rohini Hattangady, Akash Khurana and Om Puri. The movie did not do all that well in the Hindi Belt (the Ramsay Bros were ruling the boot) Riding upon his sucesss in Bollywood post Rangeela and Satya, RGV then makes Bhoot a cut to cut copy of Raat just replacing the old characters with what Ms Tyagi called 'star studded' and just changed the Exorcist from Om Puri to Rekha and a twist with Fardeen Khan's character,
Now, if you really want to see a good horror movie-- this one is a classic, and I remember seeing it on DD back in the days and being scared out of my wits. The 1981 supernaturaal thriller 'Gehrayee' strarring a very young Padmini Kolhapure amidst a cast featuring Anant Nag and the legendary Dr. Shreeram Lagoo based on a script by Vijay Tendulkar and Aruna Raje. The scene where the spirit possesses padmini to a very young Amrish Puri in a fantastic cameo as a Tantrik wanting to sacrifice the possessed girl to gain powers (one of the scariest scenes as he performs the rutiral in a crematorium) and the final scene where Anant Nag is led through a forest of spirits as he goes to find out who was responsible for putting the spirit in his sister and even the exorcism scene done without the shouts of frantic baba's makes Gehrayee on the scariest Supernatural films in Bollywood--just camera work and the sound.
And there are many more that can go on and on..
Strangely, the Horror genre (as mentioned in you upload) truly is stuck with a few crappy film makers such as Vikram Bhatt, which are doing nothing but just repeating the same formula over and over again. Sad. Particularly when our culture in endowed with everything from chudails, dayans, aatma's Djinns (in one religion).and compare that to Hollwwood which only has Witches. Oh there is so much to talk about.
Speaking of Hollywood William Peter Blatty's 'The Exorcist' remains my favorite.
However, Ms. Chopra, kudos for the brilliant work. Mr.Desai and Ms,Tyagi, your comments on cinema are very entertaining. Keep up the good work.

I think Ramsay's did very well with Horror movies - Hotel, Saboot, Samri ( was in 3D that time ) Purana Mandir , Tahkhana ( Infact Hemant Birje was introduced in this movie and had a entry scene like his Tarzan movie ) all these movies were extremely entertaining and fun and worked at box office.
Just to mention movies which are not exactly horror but one call them house of horrors with lots of blood n gore, infact I stopped watching such movies after seeing these - Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door, House on the Edge of the Park ( with David hess as crazy villain like never seen) and House of 1000 Corpses and its Part 2 The Devil's Rejects.

Guys. I'm surprised/shocked whenever Hindi horror is mentioned and there's never any mention of Danny Denzongpa.
He directed a film in the 80's called Phir Wohi Raat & as kids, it's was the MOST terrifying thing we'd ever seen!!!!!!!!
It was psychological and just so scary as hell for its time!!!!!!!
He then starred in Saaya - good God it was disturrrrrrbing!!!!
Such a messed up film about obsession which transcends the physical realm and is truly fucked up.
Time and time again, horror films are discussed, yet inn filmon ka koi bhi mention kabhi nahin hota. They screwed my childhood!!!!!!!!!
