- Enjoy my mini documentary about the life of PBS icon, Huell Howser.
With popular shows that made him a Southern California staple as California's Gold, Videolog, Visiting & Road Trip with Huell Howser, he was a regular to look forward to on Sunday nights on public television.
Born in Tennessee; Huell became a Marine, then worked for the University of Tennessee's local television network before making the move to Hollywood in 1981. He lived in William Frawley's (Fred Mertz from "I Love Lucy") and was a frequent regular at Pink's Hot Dogs.
His aggressive, but friendly and approachable interviewing techniques set him apart from the rest...and is seen by many as what we know as the modern social media vlogger. He was recognizable and made many friends along with way. He eventually purchased homes in Palm Springs, Twentynine Palms and Newberry Springs.
He retired in 2012, and sadly passed away a year later in 2013.

8:36 - Huell never married because he was gay. Turns out cancer wasn’t his only secret. I have run into a surprisingly amount of people that crossed paths with him or knew him in some capacity. It was sorta well known that he was gay, I don’t know if he was “in the closet” or just a private man in that way. I’d be really curious what his cameraman, Louie has to say about it. My take away is that while he wasn’t married, he was never unloved.
I do wonder how complicated his life and thoughts on homosexuality were. If he kept it private as to not alienate others, or if perhaps his southern roots and him being from an older generation meant he didn’t feel 100% comfortable in his own skin. I don’t know the answer, but am curious to find out.
Huell was seemingly such a simple man, but I’d love to learn more about his nuances and his views on hiding his private life. He sounds like a complicated man.

I am from Peru and I found out about Huell’s shows when I was 30 yo. I used to watch every single one of them on Kcet. I learned a lo thanks to him. After some time I realized he passed away. So sad news. What a great legacy he left! Now I am 52 and love Golden California and keep watching his shows.
Huell and Dan Miller and Pat Sajack all worked at WSMV (Nashville, TN) around the same time before heading to California.
Huell was always searching for California's Gold, little did he know he was the gold all along...

why be mean just to be funny? I came from the time when we didn't ram our sexuality down other's throats in order to prove how "acceptable" we are, shows much more class and dignity which Huell (by the way) certainly had. I LOVED Huell, how can you not? He at least added a lot of value to the World. A class act and always brought sunshine and a smile to my face whenever I got to watch. God bless him, we need more people who are sincerely interested in others and happy to be loving life, he helped us a lot by being here. I personally miss him and would watch any of his shows that I come across. Thank you for this video.......LOVED HUELL. Classy gentleman ❤ RIP Huell.
Huell left us with over 400 precious episodes of his shows. California is and will always be golden. It's up to each of us to discover and cherish it. RIP Huell, and thank you.

When I left CA for the last time in 1986 I'd lost my chance to ever go back, in view of what's happened to the state since. But I was enthralled with Huell Howser's presentation of the state, places I'd been to and places I never knew existed, and every time I see one of his episodes I can't help but feel homesick. I can't stand what CA's politics have done to the state, but it remains THE most culturally diverse, geographically diverse, geologically diverse, and historically _rich_ state in the country.
Very few places where you can go surfing and skiing on the same day within about 60 miles of the beach and the mountains. Every sort of social vibe you can imagine, from Hollywood to the barrios to the beaches to the desert and mountain communities, California has literally everything and everyBODY every other state has put together. When he died part of the state died with him, and it's just not the same. It breaks my heart that I can never to back to settle, but I'll always have Huell's travelogues to remind me of how good I had it when I was young.

Yes!!! Louie, the cameraman. I remember he finally did a face reveal on an episode. But I don't remember what he looked like.
He was the best ambassador the state of California ever had. He had the greatest smile I've ever seen on a human being and it stayed that way until he left us, I miss him more than I even thought he was an angel.

Didn’t realize how much of a gem he was when his program was on air.
Hearing him talking in his Tennessee accent made me either laugh or cringe.
But, i always wanted to visit the places he went to and introduced me/us to.
Went to some places, but there are many, many more left.
Looking back it just amazes me how ignorant i was.

Yes...Huell seemed so effusive and over the top about the smallest things.....but it wasn't fake nor contrived at all.....he really loved discovering out of the way little tidbits.
He did well at picking up something of interest and let the narrators tell the stories😊

Grew up watching Huell Howser and loving his wholesome, kind nature. Such a beacon of positivity. The world was definitely a better place when Huell was around making us all smile.
I cried like a baby when he died. I watched him almost nightly when I was going through some rough years of life. He was with me through it all. God Bless Huell, you are missed and nobody can replace you.

We were so lucky to have been featured in a segment for his Video Log shows, we were the segment on the hand made cigar company based in Downtown Los Angeles , LA PLATA CIGAR COMPANY est 1947. He returned several times throughout the years bringing out of state/country guests to the shop. Huell not only filmed his segments for his shows but truly cared about the culture he discovered and was happy to share it with the world. very genuine, that persona was real, very approachable and friendly. RIP Huell

As a kid that mostly grew up without cable, i loved his show. He was the original travel guy, and even though he was a little corny, he made you feel like he was your friend. R.I.P.

I was born in New Mexico but have lived in California since 1978, and Huell Howser of all people, checked out a place that ships New Mexico chili to California four weeks a year.

Sept 13 1994 I met Huell filming the Santa Monica Per episode. It was my 21st birthday and he made it special. We shared Hotdog On A Stick at the foot of the pier. Such a radiant, wonderful human being.

One night I was having some drinks with a friend at a cool small Tiki bar in Hollywood. Right next to me was Huell. I actually didn’t know who he was but my friend did. So we started to chat with him. Extremely nice guy! So easy to talk to. Was funny too. He told us about some of his adventures. Was really great to have met him. I couldn’t believe he had died already. Way way too early. RIP. 🙏

He hung out at that Tiki bar. It was near the station . My buddy lived on the same street and used to drink with Huell at that Tiki bar. He has lots of Huell stories.
Very nice tribute. He had the voice, dynamic personality, and energy to make his mark wherever he traveled. And hopefully beyond.
So enigmatic -- so at home with people, and yet was intensely private; loved talking to people but hated being talked ABOUT; enjoyed new things, new places, and meeting people, yet was one of the most impatient people to work with. Impulsive -- he didn't have a script because he didn't need one; he winged it, an extemporaneous style that was endearing to the people he interviewed and the people who watched. You're not gonna get anymore down-to-earth than Huell Howser. The world needs more like him.

I was lucky to meet him somewhere around 2000 at his home in 29 Palms, CA. He threw a party for the local artist community.
You couldn't find a better host or a nicer guy. He was so warm, humble, and gracious to everyone. And whenever anyone was leaving,
he'd classically say something like " Oh, you're not leaving yet are you?" What a great human being !
I've lived in and around Los Angeles for the past 51 years. More than half of my Southern California experiences, comes from watching Huell Howser on the television. He inspired me to go see for myself, what's out there.
You know some people make fun of Huell’s overly enthusiastic approach but they fail to realize that this is what makes him an exceptional interviewer. It’s disarming and it allows the interviewee to share their information or story without pretense. Thank you Mr. Howser for sharing with us these pieces of California’s Gold!
What a legend! When you saw his show you felt like one of your friendly neighbors was giving you a tour. He seemed fascinated by simple things and when you watched you became caught up in his enthusiasm. We need more people like him.
He was the perfect representative for California on TV. Always looked forward to his shows. He taught many people about all of the incredible people, landscapes, and other “riches” that were just waiting to be seen or discovered in California. He was like our Ambassador from California to the world!

Some friends and I were lucky enough to meet Huell at Taylor's steak restaurant, in Los Angeles about a year before he passed. He was SOOOOO friendly and humble and joined us at our table for a glass of wine. Meeting him was unforgettable.
This man was the cream of the crop. Yet horrible people are still alive. I loved and miss him!!!

It took me a few years before I could watch any of the California Gold segments after Huell passed away. It felt like an old friend had died and the pain of that loss was deep. My Dad passed from prostate cancer as well. Just hit too close to home. Rest in peace Huell 🙏🏼
Huell was amazing. I remember the first time I discovered him on TV. I was higher than hell and here comes Huell with his huge smile and amazingly basic questions. It was like Sesame Street for stoned adults and catatonic old folks.

Can’t tell you how many times I watched California’s Gold especially on sick days when I did not go to school and California’s Gold was playing on tv. Really really miss Huell. These original organic tv shows just aren’t made today.

Had the opportunity to meet him coming out of an elevator in a parking structure in Beverly Hills, he was just like his shows: genuine! RIP Huell
His boundless enthusiasm for some of the most inane topics, things, and people made Huell one of the most interesting personalities I've ever watched regularly. Truly felt terrible when I heard of his passing.
He was on a natural high.
His winning smile and genuine enthusiasm for all things enable him to access all people in all walks of life. Every moment Hewell is on screen displays his sheer wonder at being alive. He was much more than he appeared.

It's hard to believe he left us over 10 years ago. I always loved the way he was so enthusiastic about every place he visited. He made an onion factory look like it was the best job ever. Somewhere I read a more in depth history of his life. He was a pretty complicated guy for sure. He had a natural talent for t.v. but had a hard time working with people. I hope he was able to resolve some of his issues before he left us.

I came across him once in DTLA, and even though bothering famous people is not my style, I knew that I would regret not asking him if I could take a picture with him. That pic I will cherish forever. When he passed away, I went to his memorial at the Greek Observatory that the City of LA organized. It was like losing a best friend. 😢 Thank you, Adventure Stop, for keeping his memory alive.
Huell would have millions of followers if he was still alive and doing his show online. Huell made the blueprint for social-media videos. This guy was decades ahead of his time. RIP
Huell was my first celebrity encounter when I was about 8 years old. My grandfather and I ran into him and Cameron in downtown Los Angeles. They were filming an episode about fountains. Huell took several minutes of his time to chat with us, shake hands, and get a photo.

I worked at KCET while he was there. And he was exactly like what you see on TV. It wasn't fake at all. With that booming voice, you could hear him wherever he was in the building. :-)
He lived in 29 palms CA, I use to see him on the regular he was always burned out looking did not say hello and had a grocery cart full of liquor and TV dinners
We loved going on adventures with Huell. He became more like a friend than a TV show host.
I miss him….his death was one of the only time I felt hurt by a prominent persons death..he was the only person who could make LA seem folksy….many people try to do incarnations of this but nobody has been able to duplicate him…but he was unique with his genuine attitude….now people should try to be over the top, way too scripted or go for shock value
I have been in too many places having fun and eating, thanks to him. I used to watch his programs during the week and pick up one place to go on the weekend.

Just found this. Huell Howser was truly a golden personality that made this California native appreciate what is in my own backyard. He is very much missed.
I went to the Bristlecone Pine Forest above Lone Pine after seeing his video of the place. I had to try and get there twice, the first time my car was loaded down and would not make it above 10k ft level, so I emptied the car and went back the next day and made it, I was only going 10 mph at the top but I made it. My favorite Huell show was the north east corner of calif where they got lost "with guides" but they finally found it. I have a bookmark for his California Gold videos, always worth re watching. Rip:Sempre Fi !
I love Huell Howser, but having lived in both Tennessee and California I can tell you, Huell copied a popular local Eastern Tennessee television program called "The Heartland Series", and he took it to Southern California where he reproduced the program and changed it's name to "California's Gold", and the rest is history! R.I.P. Huell.

He was a treasure. When I lived in Southern California, I visited many of the places he suggested. I especially enjoyed the peach cobbler in Pasadena. What a legacy he left.
Fun fact: According to Vince Gilligan, Huell Babineaux, pick-pocket extraordinaire on "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul", was named after Huell Howser.
Huell was named after his mother AND his father -- "Huell" being a mashup of their names, Harold and Jewell.

He was a wonderful guy. I had the chance to work with him when booking him to speak at an event. He was the same off camera as on. And a wonderful speaker. I still love his shows.

Huell's enthusiasm is contagious. Huell Howser, Bob Ross, and Jim Varney (Ernest) were my favorite wholesome surrogate uncles growing up, and to this day. I miss them dearly, may they all rest in peace. My deepest condolences and respect to the Howser family. 🙏❤

He could research and cover a topic which maybe did not sound very exciting…..but when he actually interviewed the people associated with the story and explained more about the topic, you were witnessing again a TRUE TV LEGEND . Everyday between 7 & 8 pm, I still watch him on PBS!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

My wife and I use to watch him all the time and loved him, his program was one that we would always looked forward to watching.
It was a shock to us when he passed away. One of his famous lines that my wife and I still use today "so you're telling me". Will always remember him no dought.

God blessed us with Huell, I traveled the state when I wasn't able to leave my cell. Now I love sharing California's gold with my wife as we follow his footsteps.
Losing Huell is a tragic loss for everyone. It's been 10 years since Huell left us, and he is missed more and more with each passing day.
Used to watch his shows with my mom and it brought us together. Loved his delving into California history.
I found myself maybe 25-30 years ago standing next to Huel in the parking lot waiting for our cars at my beloved El Coyote restaurant one night. I approached him and told him I was a fan and loved his California's Gold program. He asked what episode was my favorite. I told him it was the one with the elephant being reunited with his/her former caretaker after decades of not seeing each other. And how touching it was that the big pachyderm remembered his/her old friend after so many years. Huel told me that that very episode was cited more than any others as most popular by fans. If you haven't seen it, find it and watch it. Huel couldn't have been more friendly and pleasant. Was sad when I learned he had passed way back when. 😔

I used to watch California’s gold whenever I was sick or waiting for my mom to get out of work because my grandparents would watch me and they did not have cable. Even though I thought it was boring at times his presence was comforting.
People always ask me if I got into Bob Ross and I’m like nah I have Huell Howser.

I can't believe it's been that long since he passed. I remember watching his shows back in the 1990's with my family. We tried to go to the places nearby us.
He was entertaining and educational!
I used to ride my ATV along the Ridge Route Road where Huell once did a segment. I found where he had signed his name on an old Forest Service Fire Tank next to the Tumble Inn.
His greatest gift was his humanity. Getting more rare.
I sat next to Huell in one of our classes in high school. He was a tall thin kid and not a bit different from when he was older. I saw him again years later at a county fair near Nashville. Lost touch with him but one day in a motel in San Jose I was watching PBS and there was the same old Huell. I am saddened I didn't get to visit with him but just thinking about Huell brings a smile to my heart.

What wonderful memories this reflects. I met Huell at Rite Aid in Palm Springs. He was authentic and one of a kind with unbound enthusiasm. Really a great guy.
As a kid growing up in LA in the 80s. Howser and vin scully were the voices my childhood. Southern California gems.
Huell Howser was my favorite TV personality. I watched Huell on Road Trip and California Gold on KCET/PBS for decades. I'm sitting here very sad to hear about the end of his life even though it did not happen recently. Huell brought me many enjoyable vicarious trips to interesting places... some I had been to and some I had never known about. Huell's style and grace made him seem like a friend to everyone.
Rest in peace Huell, you left behind a wonderful legacy.

I moved to California in 1993. His program gave me such an appreciation of California that I knew when work took me away in 1999, I would return. I started watching again 2 years ago when I retired in Palm Springs. Thanks for sharing this.
This man was pure California Gold! I grew up watching him and get excited when I hear his voice. I'm happy to have been lucky enough to grow up in the greatest state watching this amazing man! Thank you for this!

Loved watching Huell on PBS in the 90's. He had me driving all around California... amazing times with my friends. Thanks Huell....RIP.
I used to watch him and he was so relaxing and enjoyable to hear him speak about California. Growing up in SoCal it was refreshing to hear him speak so down to earth. When I moved for a time to Boston, I'd watch him on the Boston PBS station. It gave me a sense of home I'd almost forgotten until watching this video.
Such an important of my life. Actually went to his memorial at Griffith Park. Met him a couple of times and actually hung up on him once. I was doing some work stuff, he called personally to let me know he wouldn't be able to take part (classy) but I thought it was a friend doing to a Huell impression. We all did him. I called his producer, asked if that was really Huell, he said it was and just kept laughing at me. Said it happens a lot. A great man. Always liked that it took someone from outside the state to really lock in with such appreciation.
