I saw Vinny in LA back in the mid 80's in a small venue. I don't even know the name of the band he was playing with (not Dio), but it was so small, I was about 15 feet from him. I stood at the stage and my eyes never left him. The bass player kept trying to stand in front of me to get me to look at him, and I would look around him at Vinny. He got pissed and moved to the other side of the stage lol. Vinny had to of known I was a fellow drummer. He kept pointing his stick at me once he realized I wasn't there for anyone but him. right in the middle of a song and he'd point to me... I never forgot that!

Awesome drummer, to me, he is the John Bonham of Metal drumming. I had the honour to open for his band Dio Desciple's in New York. Awesome guys, Mark Boals was singing for them that show and he sounded amazing, nice person. Craig Goldy and Vinnie Appice were super nice. His drumming is power house level. Not super technical but has extremely fast SINGLE bass peddle work (very similar to Ian Paice and Nicko McBrain) and has awesome, powerful drum fills and is perfect for what the song calls for. He stays in the pocket when needed and then lets it loose during chorus sections. He gave me signed drum sticks and a signed poster, I will never forget that

Never understood micing the concert toms from the tom. They sound thin because you are hearing the head. You get less than 15% of the actually drum sound. You then have to get it electronically from the board, EQs, and effects. But I will say that Vinny is a monster. I first heard and saw him with Rick Derringer in the early 1970's.

And one more thing: Since monsters musically like Iommi, Butler and Dio chose him to play with them( and they obviously know a lot more than you smartarses that think you know everything about drums) that's got to mean he's really great!! End of story! Oh, and he also played with John Lennon and a little before he joined Sabbath in 1980, Ozzy asked him to play with him but he turned him down.
