  • Of the 12.5 million Chrysler Slant Six engines made, just over 50,000 featured lightweight aluminum blocks! But how did Chrysler get away with using an iron cylinder head? And what happened when Steve put one on the dyno? Watch and see the action!

Awesome, thanks for the info. It's funny, the story I read originally years ago was that the slant-6 was supposed to be all aluminum from the start. And when Chrysler couldn't get the aluminum to cast properly, to meet production, they changed to cast iron. And without any time to redesign it for iron, they kept the casting thickness the same, which lead to it's legendary durability.

70 pound weight savings in the block alone. Then the additional weight savings with the aluminum intake and aluminum water pump. Then add the aluminum steering box. Plus the aluminum transmission saved some additional weight. Plus they were looking at using aluminum bumper brackets. I don’t think any of those made production. In addition to that, they were also toying with an aluminum cylinder head. I think they made a couple of those as prototypes but they never left the labs. From what I have read, the big reason the aluminum block was discontinued was they were having a high reject rate on the die castings along with getting the die cast molds to properly seal before they shot the molten aluminum into them. They proved to be too costly to make. So Chrysler discontinued them.
Van you picture a 1964 or a 1965 Plymouth valiant or Dodge dart with an aluminum block and an aluminum slant six under the hood with a hyper-pack package installed on it? In a 2500 pound valiant with around 200 to 250 hp or more would have been something special. Watch out mustang and GTO!

In my years I've owned countless MOPAR products that had the sidewinder 6 and I never really appreciated them, aside from the unquestionable reliability of the design. Now here I am in my mid 50s and it would just tickle me silly to score a car or truck with a slant 6 motor. The last one that I owned was in a 1981 Chrysler Cordoba. It was a maroon colored one. Had a really nice interior. At the same time I owned a 1974 Plymouth Valiant with a /6. I traded both cars for a 1976 Chevrolet swb van with 3 on the tree. I was 24 years old so that's 30 years ago.
Anyways, I miss both of those cars today... Heck, I miss the Chevy van too.
But that's just a sad fact of life for most of us. We can't keep all the cars and trucks that we've owned and enjoyed. You can't usually get a new or different one without selling the one you have.
If we could, I'd have a huge lot full of classic cars, all worth much more than what they cost brand new 😁

Chrysler also sold a ton of slant six industrial engines. Many companies including John deere used them in swathers.
My boss had two on an irrigation pump. To get them pulling evenly, he started them at night and played with the throttles til the mufflers flowed the same red.

My dad wanted nothing to do with teaching my sister or Me how to drive and Mom didn’t like to drive so we learned from Santos driving school. Mr Santo had a Dart Swinger which had an extra set of controls in the front passenger seat, so I probably learned to drive behind a slant six. After getting my license I learned to use a manual transmission in my mom’s 63 Plymouth which had the slant six and ‘three on the tree’. Fond memories, just don’t ask me about driving home twice with no brakes.

Steve,, a few alloy block slants were brought into Oz. A Chrysler dealer I know used one in a road race car then it went into his mud plugger! Local bloke has a Plymouth Valiant wagon, as well as both 2 and 4 door 'S' models. These days there is quite a lot of 2 doors here in Adelaide.
Weight?? WHY did they not use alloy intakes? Slant 6 ones are heavy. Alloy head to would have made sense,, Buick made them so the casting tequniques were available Modern?? A new engine with only 4 main bearings,,what were they thinking!
