A few words more: Yes, everything you're seeing comes out of an executable of only 177 kilobytes size. Download it here: www.scene.org/file.php?file=/p...
UPDATE: We released source code and data files for everything. So if you want the full inside scoop, look at github.com/farbrausch/fr_public :)
The secret behind all this is procedural content generation. in a nutshell, instead of storing a movie as-is we're storing a certain number of mathematical formulas for image and audio manipulation as well as the "recipe" how to apply those small bits of code in a way that what you see comes out. And while it's running your computer's graphics card cares for the actual displaying ot the world, just like in modern 3D games. Formulas+recipe are of course way smaller than the end result, and with a few additional sprinkles of magic compression fairy dust we get down to under 200 kilobytes, which is way less than one single high quality image of this show would take.
This of course means, no, we don't have any magic technology that can compress videos down to that size, but the video has to be authored in the way described above. Manually. With, like, lots of work involved. Making this gem took us all more than two years of hobby part time work after we had five years of experience with this kind of technology.
Still not satisfied? try llg.cubic.org/docs/farbrauschD... - Krátké a kreslené filmy
This is the inverse of a magic trick: knowing how it's done makes it *way more* impressive.
this
@@doctortrouserpants1387 how it's done ?
@Neb6 but debris is quiet old imo...
@@upon7even doesn't stop it from being 177 kilobytes
@Neb6 it also uses procedural texture and mesh generators to lower the filesize
Here I am, 8 years later watching this and still my jaw is on the floor.
+mikosoft holy shit! 8 years???
+mikosoft 180 KiB, bro)
The legendary "the product" by farbrausch has been released in 2000. That's 2017. This epic beast of a demo will be allowed to vote next year.
Make that 13 years later. Still shellshocked.
@@iamlordstarbuilder5595 yeah! feel the same way!
Almost 12 years later, and still loving it.
Actually, the point is to look effin' amazing. Seems we've achieved that :)
yes you did
Year 2020.
Still
unsurpassed!
This is just the best demo ever. The pacing is amazing, the concept is damn cool, the music kicks ass.
plus it's just under 200kb :)
It was an absolute privilege to see this thing live on the bigscreen at BP07, well deserved winner.
Ok. 10 years later. Aaaaaaaand it's favorite still.
Computer art at it's finest. Two kinds of art really, both visual and coding. Well done.
I think this is my favorite demo.
Just im-fucking-possible. :) Love Farbrausch's stuff.
200K or less. Just fucking insanely well done. I'm pretty sure that if the universe is a simulation, you guys have coded it and it's probably running just fine on a cosmic Vic 20.
This demo gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME.
After 15 years, I remembered it. 177Kb of magic.
These guys would probably fit the whole world in less than a gigabyte.
world? Archimedes once said "give me a challenge and a file size to fit into and I will invent a limitless universe"
I love the handheld camera zooming and wobbling effects - like someone is recording a Kaiju attack during their train ride home.
ARE YOUUUU SEEING THIS SHITTTTT
Ive long thought this is the most stunning realtime graphics achievement ever made.
Can't believe I missed this when it was released! And the file size! Amazing! I was so into the demo scene. I'd hop from one BBS to another looking for demos. Brings me back.
That music is just beautiful...distortion rust and melody. Beautiful.
This blows my mind to this day. I have no clue why the „texture generation“ technology approach has fallen so far out of popularity. I also have no clue how the fractures and simulation of the destruction was done.
All I can say is...
Fantastische Arbeit.
i liked the building
this one is one you really gotta download and watch. youtube doesn't do it any justice on how nice it really is.
read the info:
"Making this gem took us all more than two years of hobby part time work _after_ we had five years of experience with this kind of technology."
pure art
i watched this demo five years ago, and it got me very excited. I still feel myself excited now. This demo is never getting old! Made by Gods!
Thanks for sharing some basic informations on how things like this can be done. It's so freaking impressive.
This is one of my favourite demo's in pretty much all categories, and i have watched a bunch late demo's (demos that were made in the last couple of years) :-)
I've tried this demo on my box and I'm just amazed by it - its left me speechless as were some of their other demos. These guys are gods! :)
it's impressive even before you find out it's under 200k.
absolut fantastisch,
ihr habt meinen vollen respekt.
What amazes me is that, this video on youtube is actually a lot more bigger than the exe itself..
DAS ist Kunst! Bitte weitermachen Jungs und Mädels!!
One of my favorite demos :)
HAIL DEMO SCENE! Keep it real! epic job!
This is awesome! Definitely impressed
Super demo, a jeszcze lepsza muzyka. Moje ulubione sample :)
Incredibly Awesome!!!! Don't know how they do that, but it's very impressive
outstanding....simply amazing
This is freakin` awesome, I`m not a computer nerd so I don`t know what exactly you are doing there, but I LOVE the video and also the music :-)))
+Yvonne Jentsch It is a real time scene with all music and graphics generated in under 200kb of code, i.e 20x smaller than the typical mp3 song.
+VarietyGamer Thanks for the info, I know you demoscene guys are doing absolutely unbelievable, originally impossible things. I have no idea from all this, but I enjoy the results and knowing how small it is makes it even more impressive.
This is magnificent 😮
Damn... it feels like just yesterday
So amazing!
best greets sequence
Absolutely stunning! Teh maths involved Xplodes my mind ;-)
default cube has gained conscience
Very nice, I always wonder what kind of profession these guys end up with :)
It's funny, everytime I hear tubular bells 3 (by Mike Oldfield) I have to think of Debris ^^. It may be because of the similar synth.
This is some Dr. Strange shit going on. I love it.
I am showing this to my friends who don't understand coding and also their jaws are on the floor after I explain that one single image of this would take about 50 times more space than the whole video :)
and that image would be without music.
really good!
this is the first song i ever burped to and it sounded good like it was intended try it :'D
Still impressive!
amazing! me encanta! :D
pretty awesome!
177 kb file... amazing
Amazing
I came from nostalgia nerds video on these demos and I'm blown away by this one
Yes, you have :)
amazing!bravo.
five stars, ofc.
still impressed...
And now they're working on a PS3 Demo (under their alias .theprodukkt), glorious!!
What this old good Commodore 64 can do today... :D But seriously, I liked the fact that the dark-olive covering of the sky had broken and fallen down because I liked the bright sky better. ;D
Too bad that the soundtrack was never released... [it still give me chills after all these years...] :(
+Oleg Kuznetsov google youtube to mp3, and there's a site that will let you rip it out of this video to an mp3.
+Ben Shambrook NO! Actually, sound file for the demo was released altogether with other stuff from Farbrausch, when they open sourced their work on Github: github.com/farbrausch/fr_public/tree/aec0000b34fb04a44bd88b5ecdde46620fb66b80/werkkzeug3/data/debris but to play it, an additional plugin for Winamp is required: www.1337haxorz.de/products.html
Impressive.
Wonderful work, yu can tell how is the machine that u got for make this video ?
It's not TRU to watch demos on youtube. You got to download it and feel it!
Hi, could you maybe say where I can get the software ".Werkzeug1"? I really would like to try that.
good demo. looks a bit familiar to Inception movie to me. greets!
Yes there are
reminds me of reboot
i wanna play a game like this
The only way i could even think this possible if the entire thing was code with
an 8 bit bmp here or there
discovering the ART OF #s
Max Payne 1 meets Demoscene
@rappide but it was done long before Inception ;-)
177kB exe, midi sound
Also wen's interessiert ;).
This demo jerky on my old GeForce 7 (my lastest GC).
no shadows, buu !
More bang for your kilobyte.
wOOw
@2:56
kb is god
Actually, it's the coding that is effin' amazing. THAT'S the goal too, right?
Did the sci fi TV series 'Fringe' steal the fancy wording from this ???? Ive always wanted to know.
You can't really know, but...
1. when we did this we definitely didn't copy it from somewhere else
2. Fringe was 2009, so two years later...
3. ... and the resemblances are uncanny, down to the buildings behind the words - and the way they dissolve into polygons directly coming out of the 3d font mesh gen instead of sth more aesthetic. Technical limitation for us, but for them?
I'd say draw your own conclusions :)
Some of the effects in Doctor Strange (2016) also seem to be inspired by this (amazing!) demo.
@Rhodeni iiiiiis richtich, Junge.
