- For more than two decades, The City Club of Cleveland has hosted the annual High School Debate Championship. Every year, the top two area high school debaters square off in a classic "Lincoln-Douglas" style debate at a Friday forum. Teams from Northeast Ohio are invited to attend as guests of the City Club and BakerHostetler. This year’s participants, Allison Sewell of Hawken School and Tia Speece of Kenston High School, face off.

i used to be really scared of public speaking and confrontation as well, but then i joined debate and became a lot more confident. u should try it too

She may not gave expressed it as calmly or as nicely as the second girl but I thought the first girl had way stronger arguments and counterpoints. A little better executed and I think she would win easily.
Its about preparing for everything. The first girl cracked abit when she was being cross examined and got to emotional. A strong parry of the question on speeding would have done wonders. Something along the lines of driving has licencing and laws pertaining exclusively to it so can not be held to the same standards of ownership.
The second girl won on the flow by a landslide, it's just the first one had better lay appeal.
True, but she forgets to address a quite a few of the opponents points/counter arguments.

This is done on purpose; the format of LD debate prescribes that opponents address/face their judges and generally should avoid addressing the opponent directly. It certainly feels awkward at first but is very deliberate. This is also why they both try to refer to opponents in the 3rd party outside of c-x (the opponent, the affirmative side, etc)

The first girl wasn't bad I just think she said actually too much and didn't speak as clearly as she should've. Her arguments were actually pretty good.

QueenOnni McA the second girl was clearly the more astute public speaker and did very well to maintain a calm demeanour in her presentation. However, I didn’t like her body language, facial expressions and tone of voice during the cross examination. She came across as somewhat condescending and arrogant during cross examination.
I think maybe they have time limit.. but i find her arguments more convincing. However the other girl calm tone makes up for her lack of argument strength.
@@jasminexma Yeah, she was definitely very nervous. Her opponent picked up on this and tried to rattle her even more during the cross examinations. You can see that the winning girl very deliberately tried to frustrate and unsettle her at every opportunity, and not give her a chance to get into her rhythm.

@@alyssanguyen9704 it depends on wether your team chooses to choose side or motion. In the national debate association’s forensic debate tournaments a coin is flipped and you either get to choose the resolution or wether you’ll be gov or opp, but you don’t get to choose what side you’re on knowing the resolution.

both of them are! I feel like the blond girl might have been anxious or scared because of the big crowd. She was great but i feel like the Tia won this because she was more confident and locked in the topic and dodging pivots.
Tia was a clear cut winner with regards to her whole presentation

in more circuit (progressive debate) this is considered super formal. We tend to very informal moments. This CX seems kinda robotic to me

This feels like a debate between an evil corporate mastermind and an innocent Elle Woods type hero and I’m living. 👏 👏
The long-haired girl talks SO fast that much of the argument flies by way too fast. Hard to hang on to a point because it's so fast you can't even process it.

She has 4 minutes in her first speech, and 3 in her second. The negative has 7 in their first and 6 in their second. They have more time to make and respond to arguments, while the first speaker has to talk fast to do the same.
This made me realize Zuckerberg never outgrew the nervous and jittery tendencies of a high school student on a platform.
Yeah she talked fast and stuttered a bit. She has 4 minutes to respond to a 7 minute speech packed with information. This is the hardest speech, and if she doesn't respond to every part, then her opponent will nitpick it out.
These candidates are absolutely remarkable, Im going into 8th and im planning to start a debate team when i get to high school, because we don’t have one currently.

Tia's arguement only works if the drug she is talking about has a higher proportion to make you commit a crime while on it. Alcohol for example, is linked to excessive violence and other crimes. I'd be hardpressed to find any evidence showing marijuana use makes someone violent, its a possibility there may be studies but no significant conclusion.
Tia is the better debater, but by her logic, we should be banning alcohol as well, and her point about criminal justice and rehabilitation being used together is weak because once a person gets a criminal record they are highly unlikely to be employed and recieve societal benefits thus maintaining them in a poverty cycle which we know to cause drug addiction and drug relapse. The other Girl had an easier position to argue but she needed to stop going on about systemic racism as it was pretty irrelevant to the debate.
I completely agree. The aff debater has better standing grounds on her debate Neg just knew how to counteract all her talking points a lot better. If it was constructive v. constructive I would’ve put money on Aff

I agree that drugs should be treated as public health. Allison’s arguments were pretty good but there was some things I would’ve to make sense and she was a little nervous
Had to watch Allison's part at 0.75 speed but overall they both did very well.

Both of them did incredible and did extremely well in the competition, as well as both being so pretty :-)) I look up to them.
I think if the second girl used "but then" less often, her argument would have flowed smoother. Other than that she killed it.
such a shame there was no evaluation from the judges at the end.

Neither of them was speaking fast at all. This debate was in front of an audience, so they both spoke super slow. There's a systematic way coaches train for details, such as controlling & emphasizing expressions, rounds of mock-debates, and they pay good money for the coaches in private schools

Nobody would watch them. People usually watch debates for more of an entertainment purpose to cheer their side on, or to see how the other side does. I wouldn't watch it either honestly. I learn about their platforms from just reading them online.

They try and compare driving laws to drug laws but when you're driving unimpaired you are in the right state of mind to take action and put someone in harm, when you're on drugs you don't have that right state of mind to differentiate what's right and wrong.

I would've totally joined a debate club in my high school had the club been a thing...
First girl : Stays on track, makes good and valid points, has evidence, strong speaker, nervous but courageous enough.
Second girl : Drives off track to a different topic, only oppose the opponent, weak and not interesting, uses complex vocabulary, calm and collected.
Somehow i like the second debate period.

I think the format of Lincoln Douglas needs fast speaking. I'm pretty sure its called spreading, and it helps with time limits.

Hmm if the debate was whether or not drugs should be legal, I think the second calm lady wins. If the argument is whether or not the current laws that govern that legality should stay intact, the first lady won. The problem was both were kind of arguing for both things so it was hard to follow at some points. but honestly they are both so freaking smart! God be with them!
