Back then hmong people weren’t educated so they married their cousins. Nowadays we understand science. However it is not a reason to justify marrying your own last name. If you accept the scientific idea of not marrying your first or second cousin, you should also accept the religious and cultural reason why you shouldn’t marry the same last name. My father is a Yang and my mother is a Vang but you end up marrying a Vang girl it doesn't makes a difference you are blooded both ways. 18 clans is a very small community everyone is related. Yes, the tradition has been practicing for centuries; however, did you really know about our Hmong last names! As my last name is named after a bear. What about other last names. According to the oral history that I knew, Hmong does not have last name. We used to call our first names in addition to our fathers and or grandfather. Just to ID who this person is. When someone is married to his/her spouse of the same last name; in my opinion it is OK. Now-a-day, technology is available so I just wanted the couple to do blood test first, just for the sake of their gene to be healthy in the generation to come.

I remember grandma telling us this story when we were kids about same last names marrying. Small villages allowed it til GVP threatened to kill them if they married the same last name. Thats when the same last names marrying each other stop.

Back then hmong people weren’t educated so they married their cousins. Nowadays we understand science. However it is not a reason to justify marrying your own last name. If you accept the scientific idea of not marrying your first or second cousin, you should also accept the religious and cultural reason why you shouldn’t marry the same last name. My father is a Yang and my mother is a Vang but you end up marrying a Vang girl it doesn't makes a difference you are blooded both ways. 18 clans is a very small community everyone is related. You go to weddings all the og will be asking about history of each clan and end up a father marrying a daughter status or an aunty status will be marrying a nephew. Yes, the tradition has been practicing for centuries; however, did you really know about our Hmong last names! As my last name is named after a bear. What about other last names. According to the oral history that I knew, Hmong does not have last name. We used to call our first names in addition to our fathers and or grandfather. Just to ID who this person is. When someone is married to his/her spouse of the same last name; in my opinion it is OK. Now-a-day, technology is available so I just wanted the couple to do blood test first, just for the sake of their gene to be healthy in the generation to come.
