The first time I went on the Class 442 was with South West Trains back in 2002 and they were smooth and comfortable to travel on. I love the Class 442s and like them in their SWR livery as well.

Yes. They were operating the Portsmouth Harbour and Weymouth services with South West Trains until they were withdrawn and cascaded to Gatwick Express in 2007 and 2009.

Heard that the Class 442s have been permanently withdrawn and South Western Railway are retaining the Class 458s to replace the Class 442s and reforming them from 5 to 4 coaches and re-rated to meet the need for 100mph operations and other modifications to associate them for Mainline services to the South Coast

I can't believe SWR scrapped these trains all because they had problems, if they knew it was going to happen then they should of given those Class 442's back to Gatwick Express and people wouldn't need to sit on those horrible ironing board seats of the GX Class 387's and it would be nice if Southeastern take the Class 442's because 1 they have toilets and have more seats because they have long carriages but considering SWR runs there TOC like idiots, all I can say is R.I.P my childhood Class 442's you will always be in my memories forever even though I can just go on Train Simulator 2021 and play with it and use the AP sound pack.

SWR: let's bring these nice old barely (by train standards) used units into our fleet and retire some of the older ones (rip 456 and 458). We will also bring in a few 701s to replace them.
Also SWR: *Let's ditch brand new perfectly good 707s and replace them with 701s!*

Can’t believe these were scrapped, what a complete and utter waste.!!🤬🤬 they had been refurbished and there wasn’t anything wrong with them. Makes my blood boil when they scrap perfectly good machines just for the sake of it. They could have just replaced the centre motor car with a mk3 pantograph coach so they could have also been used on 25Kv network
