61 year old woman here, I have been doing Pilates for 4 years and have increased muscle and body comp by strengthening and stretching which happens throughout the workouts. And have always walked miles a day, 4 mph. Animal based diet (and eggs) with a tiny bit of fruit and veg and dairy. Feeling great, and much better than I did in my 40s and 50s.

Mark sold Primal Kitchen for $200million and eats zero grains and is 70. I get where he’s coming from. But being 45, training hard, under more stressors etc you def need vitamins and minerals as part of your supp routine especially in America where our food is literally poison. Also he never said he doesn’t use protein powder.

    LOVED THIS!
I’m a 60 year old woman, and I find myself making a lot of these same changes. This interview made me feel so much better about my choices, especially after I had to have a radical hysterectomy earlier this year.
The time out of the gym just before and after my surgery made me rethink a lot. I’ve been a gym rat since the 80’s BTW.
I eat a lot of plants, am definitely more an omnivore than carnivore, other than that 100%!
I walked 5 miles today and did a stretching session.
Thanks for bringing a good diversity to your content.

My wife and myself, she is 65 and I am 67, have been eating keto for the last 2 years. That was a great change for us from a nutritional and health point of view. About fours months ago we transitioned to a predominately carnivore diet and feel even better overall. We have been raising a small herd of highlander cattle for our consumption on approximately 6 acres of grass pasture at our place for around 15 years now. A comment was made that hamburger containing more Collagen compared to other cuts of beef and that never crossed my mind. Ours is 20% fat and I cook in a tablespoon of home grown lard. We have been eating a lot of hamburger recently and we just I love the taste of it anyway we cook it. So now its not so surprising why we both crave it all the time, especially on gym days.

As a physical therapist for the past 27 years, I would remind everyone that our ability to break down animal flesh declines as we age. The enzymes to break down meat into something the body can use just simply takes longer and longer the older you get. For some people (women at an earlier age generally than men) I think that protein supplementation is the easiest most-effective means of getting sufficient protein into the body. If your mother or sister is a "never really liked much meat" person, then around 50 or 55 years old is a good age to start supplementing once daily. And I don't know of anyone in my practice who has not benefitted from protein supplementation by the age of 80, male or female.

At 37 years old after years of living “the lifestyle”, I think we all discredit the bodies ability to assimilate. No matter what you do good or bad, the body will adapt and stabilize. Introducing new stimuli will always be necessary especially as you age. What worked at 23 wont work at 33 etc.

Stretching 1st thing every morning, partic in winter. Two HIT workouts a week max 40mins, often less. Have recently started 3mg each Creatine/Taurine/ with Citruline before w/out with a teaspoon of BCAA's daily... Finish off a hot shower with a cold one. First, I feel cold plunges should mimic nature so the ideal temperature is a cold spring or waterfall, not an ice bath. I'm fortunate to live near both and it feels great. Second, running doesn't need to be done for long periods to be beneficial. Latest article on research shows even short bursts of running gives majority of benefits, so go walking with 5 to 8 sprints for about 20 to 30 seconds each. Younger people can sprint 100% like HIIT training but older folks can just go as fast as possible that still feels good.

Good stuff. Awesome to hear one of the health guru pioneers' new views on things. I so respect that being open to having one's mind changed. He also shows his wisdom in speaking about balance and that goofy extremes thing that we all do. For me, I always look to nature for wisdom. The running thing seems like yet another one of those extremes. In what situation did we run constantly, or when do other animals do so? Or for longer than seconds (being chased or chasing). Then rest (or hide, ha). My question to Mark would be why can't he still run? I'm thinking because he screwed up his knees/hips from abusing them like that. Not age. Just like getting old doesn't give us diseases. It's the crap/ignorant way we lived and ate for years (including lotsa frankenmeds). Build up of toxins, worn out liver and kidneys from those unnatural/extreme ways of living. More wisdom in "I do it when I feel like it" from someone who has already established a good healthy lifestyle. Healthy desire is one indicator of our critical intuition (best lifestyle tool). Oh, he said he takes D3, so I'm wondering if he also takes K2. And if not, why? I must have missed why he stopped using protein powder. Also, he seems to greatly underestimate yoga. He might wanna give that some more thought/research. and lose a dab of that macho thing that seems to spur his aversion to it, heh. One of our (and our world's ... we are that) big issues is discounting OUR feminine energy (we are all both masculine and feminine energy). Emotions is one mega important one of those. For our health and everything else.

Much of this makes sense with our evolution. We walked around looking for food, chasing it down (cardio), wrestling (weight lifting/HIIT) it down for the kill, and then dragging (cardio) it home. When snackish...we would graze on some berries and well ...whatever we could find (more walking and sometimes some tripping ;) ) and be fine without supplementation. Natural combinations of vitamins and minerals are best for absorption as well as fiber and... walking. We got hot chasing food (heat shock proteins), and occasionally cold (cold shock proteins) from being nearly hairless monkeys, which helped make us just a bit tougher for the next chase. Spiritually, during hard times of famine and what not.. those that believed in something typically would have more mental toughness to ride it out. It's like the placebo effect for the mind.

    • @giovannidominoni
      @giovannidominoni Před 10 měsíci +3

@@goodman854 your comment makes no sense. What @gregpithan was writing about is just what our body is designed to do. Of course hundreds of thousands of years ago we were attacked by animals, we had no cure for infections and if we broke a bone we were done. We had no medicine. And we were eating what we could find in that particular place and season and climate we were living in, adapting sometimes to a carnivore diet or, when more vegetable and fish food was available (we have scientific proof of this), we preferred to live on that sort of diet. Also, we started eating grains much before the agricolture revolution (bye bye paleo diet). This means that people back then were simply struggling all the time and were almost never living an healthy life because they were forced to live with what they could find. The agricolture revolution came after a prolonged period in which the forest and the available food simply started being less available due to a climate change, and it happened in spots were, for thousands of year before that, people had started to crowd because it had been a particular rich place, full of natural food resources (and their diet was mainly based on fruit, veggies, nuts, fish and grains). Then the weather changed, and they needed to adapt. Ask a paleonthologist: this is what science says. So talking about how long they could live makes no sense: how do we know how long they lived as an average? And the bones we have are they the bones of healthy people or sick people? People who struggled or people who were lucky? We have to think about what our body is adapted to do, and what our body is adapted to do is: get up in the morning at first sun, go and look for food. Be on the move most of day. Eat all sort of veggies and fruit (at the time fruit was not as sweet as now, now that we have genetically modified it through selection to be sweeter), all sort of nuts, tons of fish when we were lucky enough to occupy a spot near to a stream, and the occasional meat when it did not mean too much of a struggle (otherwise it was simply not worth it). Eat all parts of the animals: skin, tendons (collagen), and internal organs (liver very rich in vitamin a, heart very rich in Taurine). Go to sleep right after the sun is down. Do not clean yourself obsessively (it disrupts the microbiome). That is what we are made for, and if we could stick to it, we could certainly live an healthier life.

The philosophy of 'whatever we think cavemen did is the epitome of human evolution and therefore should be emulated' is short-sighted and BS. My lifestyle and activities at age 67 in the year 2023 bear no resemblance to the mythical caveman existence. I doubt there were 67 year old cavemen. In fact, my lifestyle and activities bear little resemblance to my parents' or their peers' when they were 67. I am far more capable of working hard, playing hard, and enjoying my life. I'm in my 60's no wrinkles, no double chin, almost a sixpack, 220lbs 19" arms, no cardio and getting leaner (I should start lol) I eat a ton of fruit most days, I love Organic milk about 1/2-3/4 gallons a week, 130-200 grams of protein a day., and no signs of sarcopenia. Grain finished beef don't spend just a couple of days or weeks in a CAFO. More like 3 or 4 months. And the slight difference in omega 3s isn't the big problem - it's that, after being stuffed with an unnatural diet for that period, the animal is unhealthy by the time it's slaughtered, and the animal's biochemistry affects ours when we consume it.

Being an expert in something does not make you an expert in everything. And he is wrong about two things: He says that the body does not know how to distinguish between the stress of traffic or an argument, and that of exposure to the cold, as examples, but in reality it does. That's why if you spend half a day on the street, doing work errands, shopping, you come home exhausted for lunch, but if you spend half a day doing your favorite physical activity, the gym or even watching the beach, you're also tired. but at the same time relaxed and your mind calm, with a feeling of well-being. All of this may be due to various factors, but surely to the hormones optimally secreted by the body and brain. There is another thing that says about supplements, is that that is fine for him, a particular case, but most people might need it due to nutrient deficiencies between foods from decades or centuries ago and those from current overexploitation with chemical fertilizers, pesticides or genetic engineering to be bigger and juicier but not necessarily more nutritious, as studies show.

Interesting point. I'm an older person who has definitely benefited from having an active lifestyle throughout my adulthood. I never took any supplements beyond a daily multivitamin until I was into my 50s. But now that I'm retired, all my meals are prepared in my kitchen with the best ingredients I can grow or buy, and I've been eliminating supplements one at a time with no detrimental effect. There are three supplements that I'm retaining: SAM-e, protein powder, and creatine. The latter two have increased the effectiveness of my resistance training, especially since old farts like me don't utilize protein as well as we did decades ago and it is almost impossible to consume sufficient protein without supplementation. SAM-e keeps my mood/energy level at a level more like I was naturally as a younger person.

I agree with him on the cold plunging. New data shows the stress state could actually make it worse for you but icing particular body parts is good to prevent and heal.
Also, grass fed grass finished is amazing tasting! It’s good for the animal and environment too.
I am a believer n vitamins and minerals. Our food and meat doesn’t have as many as we need in some areas.
Fish oil, turmeric, Alpha Lipoic acid, adaptogens, GLA, and many other disease and health prevention supplements are great too!

Mr. Sisson and Mr. DeLauer NEVER mention NOR discuss appropriate daily levels of quality protein intake per body mass, age, gender, and training even though a younger Muscle Mag model with high muscle mass is sitting across from an extremely experienced and older athlete on a carnivore diet!
Great overall discussion, but the title is intentionally misleading Mr. DeLauer, and a golden opportunity for an important protein supplement discussion supporting the title of this video is missed.
An 8 oz steak is approx (30g x 8oz) 240 grams* and contains 60 grams of protein. (* Note: computational final unit is grams)
If the 1 gram per pound of body mass consensus is utilized and Mr. DeLauer weighs say 210 pounds, then 210/60 = 3.5 of those 8 oz steaks have to be eaten PER DAY plus carbs and fats which is pretty implausible for most people to do (or afford) even on a carnivore diet.
As we age, protein digestion and assimilation becomes more difficult. The current clinical nutrition literature examining the daily protein intake recommendation for seniors to maintain their skeletal muscle mass rises to about 1.2 grams per pound of body mass if their kidneys can handle it.
And this is why daily protein powder supplementation is important!
Nice chat, but NO discussion on CREATINE supplementation either. Unbelievable missed opportunities here by both professionals.

He looks amazing - at 70 very few people have this amount of mobility, strength and energy. The cold plunge thing is overdone, likely some benefits but the science is inconclusive. The one truth with independent studies not influenced by selling something is strength - resistance training is the number one way to increase longevity. There is not conclusive evidence for any diet. I go by the use common sense approach. Peter Attia seems to have the best guidance. But you can’t argue with Marks results. Looks great. I agree with him on walking, but I love to run, it’s my favorite thing to do. But I worry about the negative results to my joints.

I've found that even walking works better if one minimizes the heel strike by wearing "barefoot style" shoes and paying attention to and emphasizing the "launch" phase working the calves more. This actually seems to encourage the bare minimum heel strike and take the stress off the hips and knees, which is probably counterintuitive because of the lack of extreme cushion. I think the difference is it's more natural and one is more aware of one's gate.
PS: I suppose "calf pushups" might also help with this, though the barefoot shoes seem to be helping me strengthen my feet without doing that. I _do_ walk 10k+ steps a day, including at least one or two 30-minute-plus walks.

I like the comments on grass-fed meat/poultry. Of course you want to avoid cattle/livestock that is pumped with hormones and anti-biotics. If you're concerned about your Omega 3: Omega 6 fatty acid ratio (which everyone should be since if you have significantly more of the latter [omega 6] it will lead to body inflammation), make sure you are eating small wild-caught fatty fish such as salmon, small mackerel, sardines, herring prolly 2x a week. If you buy any of these (get salmon whole) in canned form make sure they are using olive oil (AVOID plant oils like the plague). I would advocate for everyone to take a good Omega 3 fish oil as well daily. You can also add more omega 3 fatty acids into your diet by using extra virgin olive oil as a salad dressing and general condiment (keep an eye on portion size). It is NOT recommended that you cook in medium-high or higher heat with EVOO because the heating process has shown to create short-chain fatty acids in the form of TRANS FAT. If you need a cooking/frying agent, especially at higher heat/smoke points, stick to grass-fed butter, ghee, or lard/tallow. Get rid of all your seed oils that is not olive, avocado, or coconut oil. Other good sources of omega 3s is grounded flaxseed (buy it whole and grind it with a spice/coffee bean grinder before consumption) which can be used in conjunction with olive oil (and also adding balsamic or apple-cider vinegar) as salad dressing. Chia seeds (be sure to soak them first, don't have to ground these bad boys though) also has a good omega 3: omega 6 profile (flaxseed is a little better but variety is the spice of life). Also some nuts in moderation (nutrient/calorie dense foods should stick to a single smallish handful per day) such as pecans, walnuts, almonds, and macadamia nuts. Avoid cashews. The foods that I will spend a little more on for "grass fed/organic status" is butter and eggs.

I would disagree on Mark's thoughts on grass-fed beef. Yes, I do agree that if I go to a restaurant that I'm not going to worry about having an occasional non-grass-fed steak.
However, for me its not that I'm eating grass-fed to get Omega-3 but I'm eating to avoid the higher Omega-6 that comes with non-grass-fed meat.

Here is the point of pasture-raised and wild-caught animal foods. It's not about the amino acid or fatty acid profile. What almost no one talks about is that the animal incorporates much of what it eats.
So, all of the wide variety of nutrients from the plants in a pasture are concentrated by the animal. That is what plant-based diet advocates don't understand. Every nutrient you can get from a plant you can also get from an animal that eats that plant.
