    What a beautiful take on Gluck's masterpiece! I don't even like 18th century opera except for Mozart, but this is so moving!

    Interesting. Thanks for sharing. May I have more information on the musical version that this version follows? I see the score has been reordered. Why? According to which version of the score? Thank you.

    Alagna is great. Don't mind a Baritone as Amore, it works.
    But what have they done to the score? Some really strange choices here.
    Cut the act 1 heroic closer (which is common but always disappointing), transposed everything down like third, far more so than the modest Simoneau-era reworks. Alagna is more than capable of singing the original 1774 tessitura since he's done the just as high and more demanding mid 19th century stuff.

      Of course, this was live and in 2008...he was 45.

    • @Ikkarson
      @Ikkarson Před rokem +2

      Roberto Alagna might be *physically* able to produce the high notes of the original tessitura, but he does not have *at all* the character of voice that was expected then, which is that of haute-contre (not to be confused with contre-tenor which is a falsettist voice). Haute contre is far lighter and less lyrical than what Alagna can achieve with his (then) amazing bel canto / tenore dramatico voice best suited for 19th-century opera.
      Remember that the French version had been Re-written by Gluck to avoid casting a castrato not available in France at the time, as was the lead role in his original “Orfeo ed Euridice”; therefore he did not intend a heavy dramatic voice such as Alagna’s.
      Transposing down was therefore the best artistic choice for the Alagna brothers to turn the opera into a very lyrical drama-a genre that had not been invented in the time of Gluck.
