Liam stated in an AMA that because it's a lot more difficult and time consuming to render humans realistically they made an "artistic choice" of portraying the humans only as dark silhouettes. Whether there is an in-universe explanation for this is still debated but many fans just take it as the drones seeing humans differently than we do. I've got a theory of my own but I won't share that until you've caught up because there would be possible spoilers.
