How To Write A Rap Song: Order
The first and most important lesson you’ll learn in this article is understanding that you don’t have to write the song in a linear - or straight order.
In fact, many of the greatest songs and songwriters of all time in other genres than just rap - The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and so on - would come up with a chorus or a bridge and then ADD it to other verses later on.
Another way of thinking of this is like movies. When they make a movie, they don’t shoot each scene that you see in the finished product IN order…
…They might shoot two scenes in one location that are on opposite ends of the movie to save money or to maintain a certain tone or whatever…
…Or in your case as a songwriter, you can write different sections at different times in order to cut down on the chances your mind will go blank with writer’s block.
When I was first learning how to rap, I would write songs in the order that the song would be played…
…In other words, write the first verse first, the chorus second, the second verse second, and so on.
While this is a useful method when you are JUST starting off because it forces you to create based on the set structure of the beat…
…As you begin to write more and more and want to write MORE songs… faster… you begin to realize that you might catch inspiration for a section of the song that ISN’T in the set order of the beat.
    FULL ARTICLE: rapgamenow.com/how-to-write-a...
To use a common example, let’s say you hear a beat that is programmed in a way that has the first verse begin the song and the chorus come second.
As you are listening to the beat, you start humming a melody that you BELIEVE sounds like an amazing chorus.
Now, if you are following the “linear, in order” format of writing… you might think “Well that melody would be a GREAT chorus BUT I can only write the rap song in ORDER… so I will have to FORCE that chorus melody in the verse”.
So, you end up putting what would have been a GREAT chorus melody as the start of your verse, and then by the time you get to the chorus…
…You are now forced to think of ANOTHER melody to “fit in” to the chorus section of the song.
Times like these are where you end up getting writer’s block.
    Write Whatever’s Easiest
What I would suggest is practice writing WHATEVER section you think of first in full, RECORDING it (or memorizing it)…
And THEN filling in the other parts after you’ve completed the section.
To explain this further, when people ask me questions like, “Which should I write first, the verse or the chorus?”
I always respond to them that they should write whatever comes first in your creative inspiration when hearing the beat, precisely BECAUSE it will lower the chances you will get writer’s block.
Write whatever comes easiest for you first.

Everytime i have, "writers block" its me improving. Everytime i have a few day period where i can't even freestyle i always come back better then i was when i fell off.
Dont do it in any order, there are no rules. It can have 2 hooks. A lot of songs do, dont set the rule for yourself of once hook. Some songs are mostly hooks. Good music is good music, let it come out. The only rule is no rule, only guidelines

I'm very guilty of writing songs just like how I hear it. Hook is the hardest part to come up with but the first verse is usually the easiest. I had writer's block off and on for a long time but last night I was so proud of myself that I written the song in less than an hour. Mainly because of what you had mentioned @4:47 the beat is already made with the hook in it or an indication where the hook should be in the song. you can kind of hear it building up to where the hook should be and then I learn how to time my rap so that it can fit. The hook kind of made itself apparent to me because I decided to repeat the last two lines and it just so happened to sound good as a hook. for this song I didn't really write a second verse because I was out of creative juices I can't lie. So I wrote like a short 8 bars and then jumped back to the hook, then said the few bars for the first verse, then do the hook and freestyle it til the music faded out. That was honestly the best that I could do last night but it did come out good though.

If you have any suggestions I'm open to hear. I'm just trying to get better. I felt bad that I didn't really put myself out there musically last year so I'm going to try my best to do it this year. Even if I gotta record with my phone app while I save up for studio time.
Anyways thanks for tips I always go to your videos to help me when I'm frustrated. I'm gonna only use beats that have clear chorus and verse identifiers from now on. It provides structure and a direction in my songwriting process.

This may help with writers block. What i do, is i find a beat and i freestyle to it with high quality headphones, because hearing all the pieces to a beat helps you engage yourself to the beat, different beats personally give me different ideas depending on the flow, the speed, and the instruments used. It really helps to record your freestyle, then pause when you stop, then when you have the next verse, you then keep going, free styling to a beat is like training wheels, its near impossible to have bad flow when your engaged, also Sub to my channel and support me.

My problem is I'll hear about 10 melodies all at the same time for a chorus and wont be able to decide on which to use and then during the actual verse my flow switches arent in good alignment
I'll either end too early, it shoots beyond where the chorus starts, theres either too many words, too little words or my word choice will literally not allow me to sonically sound right to myself
All jokes aside I miss when it was just boom bap beats and only being required to tell a story that rhymed cuz now my shit dont feel valid unless I have like 30 double entendres, a few triples, like 7 flow switches, 5 rhyme schemes per bar, compound rhymes for the whole song, the decrease and increase of syllables per line per word, leaving room for ad libs, planning my stops and go's, planning my facial expressions, planning my body language, planning my videos, planning features, making sure I have free written's to spit anywhere, making sure I can freestyle, makin sure the punchlines I made werent already said
    This shit is exhausting

Now that I'm looking at my old verse I see bars that I look at now and think they're a little wack. I think I might be comparing my writing now to then and really they aren't as bad as I think they are.
So my question is this: do I trust my gut from when I wrote it and finish out the track with that verse, or trust my gut now and make changes to it?

Use writing aids like a story board , write about personal experiences , keep your verses genuine and meaningful to you soo it flows in an interesting way that you can relate to your life better !

Stick to the story And you can play around with bars.. Like before you start talking about the topic start by talking about how everything happened before you got where you at(the song)

Wuss gud drew I watch your channel all the time. Can you shoot a video on being a rapper with a kid and a full time job? I’m 25 years old, I’ve been writing and practicing my craft for 7 yrs now, ppl told me I’m outstanding at what I do but it seems like to me I’m just in a stand still and don’t know what to do. I have a lot of songs written but only recorded 3. Reason being I have songs I don’t want to record bc I end up writing something better and opening up new worlds of flow. I just want to reach my goals and dreams but I feel time is being wasted. Oh and I’m still having trouble finding my voice. Thank you and God bless

I can't speak to being a parent or having a full-time job much because I don't have kids and have been doing music full-time for more than a decade, but what I CAN say is that if you have only recorded 3 songs out of many written, that's not going to get anywhere and if you are continuously writing new things without recording, you are not really a "recording artist" you are a writer. So to be considered a real RAPPER in my estimation you gotta start recording, that's like 75% of the battle in this day and age. Thanks for viewing and commenting my G!

I understand exactly what you’re saying I’m also a musician so I been building up my home studio slowly but surely I have a laptop, mic, and interface. I have my own sound so I’ve just been going straight towards to writing and producing my own music. I appreciate the advice and I will do anything I can and need to do to be a recording artist. Much luv

Drew would you say that a good way to write is to repeatedly listen to the beat, and just come up with the lyrics as you go, or am I over complicating the process by doing that?

    • @HowToRapOfficial
      @HowToRapOfficial  Před 4 lety

Hmm I listen to the beat many times when I write personally

    • @evilteddybear121

I figured it would be a good way to write. That way I could eventually get down the beat and try to find ways to make the words flow well

Another guy did,he said every 4 bar the rap changes for example
Put the key in my car
Jump in the seat like a star
Pressing on the gas cause I'm going so far
Later that day I pull up to the bar
Then it changes to another scene

    Not something I get tbf
Keep your lyrics short as possible and deliver the style blurred to just go alongside beat as then the substance don't matter as much, but one warning you need a sick af beat to carry it off
its what I do and its what youth are vibing too now
