@@MichaelBanfieldGuitarI love the od3. The pick attack alone is unmatched against anything else I've tried. Plus it sounds more raw and natural in the overdrive which is more aggressive. Got this pedal 2 weeks ago and I can't stop playing with it because Russo good. I really wish I had this pedal years ago
The amp is pretty clean, which is why the more amp-like OD-3 sounds warmer and more organic. Pushing a slightly dirty amp at gig volume the OD-1X is killer. And it is not “mid-scooped” if you turn down the bass and treble controls. I don’t think it’s a good choice for a clean amp.
Great informative, and knowledgeable video (from a fellow manc). I think both these pedals are worth buying, and excellent in their own right. If you were looking at trying to get an old SD1 or OD1... save yourself the vintage prices... the OD3 does it spades better. As per video, the OD1X is an incredibly versatile pedal, especially for playing live. The cut sounds glorious in a band mix, and the modern design approach allows you to dial in anything from a hairy clean Twin to a screaming Marshall. The OD1X's MDP keeps everything in check so you're never too flubby on the bass strings, or thin and screechy on the high strings.
Thanks for the video. I have both pedals and prefer the OD-3 by far, because of its 'organic' sound. The OD-1X sounds more 'digital' and artificial to me. But if you're up to a more distortion-like tone, it will do the thrick.
Yeah I was kinda thinking the same thing when I was listening back to the recordings, it sounds like a distortion pedal at times compared to the OD-3. Thanks for commenting!
Ive got them both too, first I went: OD-3 > OD-1X, now I Ive found the OD-1X sounds good on its own: NOT too diggy, but like a tube screamer with nice bass! ( was goin to sell it on, but no!)😎
Hey Mike... so far the most informative vid on the OD1X in my opinion. Curiousity got the better of me a while back (before I'd seen your vids) and I came home with an OD1X, DS1X and a CP1X. Regards OD1X... the Hi and Lo are cut/boost (0dB at noon) so you can turn down both Hi & Lo to get a Mid Boost. With educated variation of Hi and Lo, you can turn that into Hi Mid Boost, Lo Mid Boost, Hi Mid Cut... and so on. You clearly have a discerning ear for tone and timbre, would you consider a revisit to the OD1X with possibly the DS1X and CP1X in tow? The DS1X is a lot more "unruly" and harder to dial in than the OD1X, but delivers an amazing reedy, chewy punch once you spend time with it (reminds me of playing through a closed back 4x12). The CP1X has a very transparent compression, and, in my opinion, set moderately adds that cranked amp (think very loud Twin) compression to your tone when your amp is not "full up" on volume. It would be great if you could take a look at these pedals and provide a seasoned, objective view. 😎
Good morning Mike, greetings from Brazil. The OD-3 is clearly less compressed, which gives the chance to have a more articulated - open, sound. Overdrives in my opinion must not carry too much compressed sound as it needs to deliver the valve-grit type sound.
The OD-3 is such a terrific overdrive. Funny enough another favorite Boss overdrive sound is the waza Metalzone in custom mode. The lower gain settings sound amazing, with the gain knob barely on. I'm not really a metal player, so it's funny for people to see a Metalzone on my board.
Ill never sell my 2 Boss OD-3s...Ive been VERY close to getting the WAZA for the cleanish EQ, but just yesterday I got a new tone out of my main pedal Mad Prof Simble: warm jazzy fat...,after that Boss OD-3 and a cheapo Dolamo D-8 and JAZZ is born! I also have the Fender Engager Boost, which handles my boost/eq preferences... Im on the verge of selling my Boss OD-1X as an extra ( I like it though : sustain, clearness after dark jazzy tones , touch sensititvity!) and I have the Boss DA-2 which is a bit similar... 😎😎
I play metal but love blues and Albert Collins is my very favorite, love my od3 but hate mt2 so your comment struck some toughs, been looking at od1x more tho, have ds1x but not as warm as od1x from the vids. Salute.
@@juanforrester2283im using both od3 and mt2waza in my board. Mt2w is capable of barelly any drive sound if you have patience do mess with. I use it for ban halen, gilmour and sambora like sounds
Great video man! :) You've already covered the OD-3 for a driven tone ("amp" like) on a pedalboard going straight into a clean amp, and this video just makes me curious on how the OD-1x is in that regard. Also, did you notice any significant differences in the noice (hum) levels?
Thanks! All of these examples are played straight into a clean amp apart from the last one. Yeah I did notice a difference in noise, the OD-3 is definitely not as quiet as the OD-1x. The OD-1x is really quiet for me until I max out the drive and then I get a bit of noise.
@@MichaelBanfieldGuitar Guess I should rephrase myself 😅 What I meant was how the OD-1x is if used like an amp. So pedalboard into the front of a clean amp, and then a drive before the OD-1x as well. So no pedals = clean tone. OD-1x on = more driven tone (maybe - unless on the low settings I guess) and then a drive before it for some middle/highgain sounds. I know that the OD-3 is great for this, but I was just curious how the OD-1x would be in this scenario. Hope that makes sense 😄 Basically, how does it handle other drives?
Sorry! I know exactly what you mean now. I did try the SD-1 into it and I thought that sounded good. I'm not sure how more scooped type drives and fuzzes would sound through it though, must get around to trying some of that!
Good video. I like the od1x i'd like to hear some blues with the treble down and bass up. The super over drive is one of those must have pedals you had at the end there. Something about it is just so smooth but not meant for all applications and its cheap.
Thanks for commenting! I find the bass gets big very quickly on the OD-1x bass control, you quickly get this almost sub bass frequency coming through. At least I did on my amp anyway. I found the SD-1 actually works quite well stacked into the OD-1x.
@@johncollins5552 I'm actually just in the middle of editing a video now for the Power Stack comparing it with all the other 'amp in a box' type pedals that Boss have done. I really liked the Power Stack, it's very versatile and the EQ character shifts nicely to suit the amount of gain being dialled in on the sound knob.
3 yellow beauties from boss 🤗. Great video ,now i undestand the od1x a little more , great comparison , maybe the best in youtube about this yelows ones , thanks 😃👍
I have an OD-1X and liked it a lot originally but it fell off my board due to power consumption, digital noise on the supply and wanting not to have a ADC delay in my dry signal path - I have some other pedals that now occupy that flat eq spot on the board (I tend to run a tone shaper like an SD1 or Rangemaster or Klon into a flatter EQ style pedal) - may give it another outing though
Yeah it does pull more power than your average OD pedal, I certainly didn't notice any delay due to ADC though. Yeah it'd be interesting to hear a Klon or Rangemaster going into it!
I'd like to ask you about this sweet-looking Hondo Les Paul, Sir. I have an opportunity to buy the same model pretty cheap in Poland, where I live. I'm seriously considering it. How heavy is yours? Are these stock pickups? Is it possible to set low action on this neck? Doesn't the chunkiness of the neck bother you? If you've already responded to these kinds of questions, just give me the right link if you can, please. :) I hope your channel will grow. There's some really useful content and it's well filmed, too. Good luck. I think I'll hit that "S" button. :)
Thanks! Mine has had quite a lot of work done over the years. Mine was never heavy but is now super light after a refinish. The neck shapes aren't normally super chunky but they're not super thin speed machines either. My pickups are Seymour Duncan 59 humbuckers but with magnets switched to alnico II, pretty much standard PAF humbucker sound. Hope this helps!
Oh and mine has had a refret, these are old guitars and the frets are often worn down when you buy them 2nd hand. To get low action you'll probably need to get a fret level done and if you like high frets you might even want to get it refretted.
Love the OD-3//have the BD-2..as well as a 14 bit OD-1..all are great pedals..like to push the 2 & 3 with a little Od-1...oh yeah in more intense enviroments I use the SD-1...lol...Boss grea t stuff have some boutiques as well but have returned the Boss for drive section..
OD-3 is one of the best Boss releases ever. 👍

The OD-3 certainly is a classic. Thanks for commenting!

Boost your Od3 with an Sd-1...they sound like they were made for each other. It will give you a screaming lead tone.

OD-1x sounds a bit sterile or bland. I prefer the OD-3 and SD-1
I'm thinking it's probably best to stack two OD-3s at this point XD
