      Seemed to do much better with a direct connection from the MagSafe charger as it could obviously breathe better with more desirable heat dissipation.

    Great Video so cool to see it with the meter!! I've been working on my own and was about to scrap it when I saw the notification for this one but we're doing it a bit differently so I guess I'll keep working on it lol. Mine shows how long it takes from 0-100% since fast chargers taper down with time and heat. I'm comparing the 5W, 7.5 generic Qi Wireless, Magsafe with 20W brick and 18W since a lot of people have those already and finally 20W fast charging with a lightning cable.

From further investigation it does seems that there are PD chargers compatible, but they have to be 9V 2.22A (20W Power Delivery 3.0). No 3rd party charger in this video had this specification. Hope this helps.

      I bet something from Anker could compete with the apple one no problem.
      I could have told you before watching this that the Samsung ones would perform poorly because Samsung has their own fast charge technology, as far as I know it only works with Samsung phones. But my Samsung phone also supports Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3. So my phone will charge fast off my Samsung chargers with Samsung's technology, or with my Anker charger with QC3.
      On the other hand, my Anker power bank that supports QC3 in & out charges slow with the Samsung charger and fast with the Anker QC3. Or my Aukey QC3 car charger. But you have to pay attention to what you're buying, because some of their power banks only have QC for either in or out but not both.
      Anyways I would put money on Anker's chargers designed for Apple products working almost as well as or perhaps even better than Apple's charger.

    • @ATORO1
      @ATORO1 Před 3 lety +14

      As you can see from the 1~7th test, its Ampere number is very constantly reducing despite the various charger brand.
      USB-PD protocol usually set the Voltage (9V in this case) and reduces Ampere as battery is filling up.
      In the video, test start with about 45% battery and continue charging while changes charger in-between. So naturally, as battery reaches 50%, iPhone’s PD charging controller could start to reduce Ampere. (To protect battery life cycle)
      To make sure, it is better to test each charger at the same battery state. (At least 20% would be preferred)

    Do you think you'll ever do a comparison of direct charging from 5w, 18w, 20w, 30w, and 60w adaptors? The latter two because many people have MacBook Airs and Pros alongside their iPhone and we often charge with those adaptors. I would be keen to know the charging times with all those different chargers. Thanks!!

    Note the wattages you were measuring for MagSafe are prior to wireless charging efficiency losses. The relative comparisons made still roughly hold true, but it’s not true that the phone was receiving 15W when the meter output indicated 15W. We’re likely 65% to 80% efficient in that case, depending on distance, so the phone was receiving considerably less. Wired charging, on the other hand, is generally more efficient.

  • @batsai

    Wow. GREAT video. I'm a little irked that the MagSafe charger seems to be specifically optimized for the 20 watt charger. Even though I have two 18 watt chargers (iPad Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max), I'll still need to shell out for a new adapter for the MagSafe charger. Not a good look from Apple. I'm disappointed that the MagSafe charger can't negotiate 15 watts from a more powerful adaptor than 20 watts, especially for non-MagSafe devices. Thanks again for being so thorough!

      If I can play devils advocate, do you reaallly need to shell out $20 for just an extra 2W of charging speed? Are you really gonna notice the difference in day-to-day of 13W wireless vs 15W wireless? Or are you really gonna notice the difference of 18W wired vs 20W wired?

Maybe Apple can manage better their others Apple charger with an iOS 14 update , who knows. My guess is that the new 20w charger has the latest and greatest PD profile and the MagSafe can negociate the full speed all the time. Awesome video as usual.

    Seems like one of the requirements for getting the fastest wireless charging would be to use a case that allows heat to dissipate from the back of the phone, which would be a "case" that's just a band around the outside edge of the phone, which is the type of "case" Apple originally sold with earlier iPhone models.

    Honestly, I’m just going to plug my 12 in using the cable and adapter from my prior iPhone or my current iPad adapter. I don’t see what the big deal is with the MagSafe but I get that people will like it. Seems like the effort to place your phone on the MagSafe and adjust it for the best connection takes about as long (or longer) than it does to plug in a lightning cable.
    And besides, it would be easier to use the phone with the cable plugged in than maybe having to adjust the MagSafe from time to time.
    Thanks but no thanks.

    • @adamc91
      @adamc91 Před 3 lety

      The magnets means it automatically aligns, so with MagSafe you just place it on it and it will centre it’s self for correct position, easier than a cable, but using the iPhone while charging then might as well use a 20w charger rather than 15w MagSafe, only easier during the night say, can easily place it down in the dark and don’t need to look for the lighting port lol

However, it was a bit disingenuous for Apple to make their claims about Mag Safe “working” with everything. The fact that you need the specific, chunky Apple 20w adapter vs the slimmer, better designed 3rd party offerings to get the full 15w is hard to accept. Even the existing USBC Apple bricks for MacBooks can’t charge 15w?!?! Not good for the Apple Ecosystem.

      you can’t get one online but i copped one the other day at an apple store they had a ton. i had no wireless chargers at all as i used to have an iphone 7 before i got the 12, i also had an apple gift card so i didn’t have anything to lose by trying it. I’m actually really enjoying it! it’s kinda the best of both worlds as i can just place my phone down as it snaps right into place without me even having to look. i can also prop my phone up to watch a video while it still charges. and i saw a bunch of people saying it’s pointless because you can’t just pick your phone up, and i doubt most of those people have even used the charger because all I have to do is place a finger down on the cable as i lift my phone. it’s muscle memory and not inconvenient at all. this is hands down the best wireless charger for the iphone 12. it’s obviously a luxury, not a necessity, but it’s the best of both worlds between wireless and regular charging

    Apple hasn't done a thing with their smartphones in years now. Honestly Samsung offers more for the price then Apple. I jumped to Samsung this year and I'm glad I did it. I was interested in seeing what Apple would offer with the iPhone 12, hell I was thinking of trading in my old iPhone XS Max and getting a deal or making a payment plan for one of them, but after watching all the reviews hyping up this smartphone I can't see myself going back. I've got a Note20 and I love it, I've got more it then people have on Apple's newest smartphone and I don't think the Pro Max will make me change my mind either. My screen is already 6'9 inches, I have a 5G phone, and can record in 4K 60fps, I can take Night photos, I can record in 8K if I feel like it, my screen rate can go up to 120Hz, etc etc. I don't see Apple matching that this year and it's sad they have fooled so many people into buying a device for much more then it's worth. If the Pro Max were $800.00 it might be worth it, but it's not and my $1300.00 dollar smartphone is an actual $1300 dollar smartphone Apples $1100 dollar smartphone IS NOT. Just my opinion have a good day.

    Thanks for the comparison. I have a question though
    No one nowhere has explained this:
    USB A > Lightning (2m) 12$ Charging Cable
    USB C > Lightning (2m) 39$ Charging Cable
    You have to buy a charging brick for 19$ from Apple in order to use USB C > Lightning cable the bundle is 58$.
    But.. USB A > Lightning cable is cheaper and you probably have a charging brick that is 30-60W WITH USB A Output
    So the question is: Are the charging speeds the same?
    Different cables have different AMP/Volts Tolerance some enabling you fast charge some that don't.
