- The Beer Box Find of 2017 was an attic find of a treasure trove of sealed wax boxes of sports cards, including a box of 1948 Bowman baseball cards that sold for a TON of money. Here's the story.

Nu-Card Scoops was a set of 80 baseball cards from 1961 which featured hall of famers and great moments in baseball. For example; a Gehrig longest game streak card and the Larsen perfect game card, but also some oddities like the game Willie Mays hit 3 triples and a card for the bean ball that ended Mickey Cochrane's career. It's an interesting set and not real expensive despite it's rarity. There was a football set also but they are rarely ever listed on Ebay and I don't even think PSA has a page for the football cards. So I don't know what the deal is with the Nu-card scoops football set because I never see any of them ever sold on ebay. A quick side note; Chris Sewall is a great guy and very well respected; Jeff Wilson is new to the hobby from 3 years ago and not the big interview you think he is(was unknown to the hobby until the pandemic and not liked by everyone). Not an interview that would do your channel good anyway. He's very polarizing and more of that hype man type you and Chris were talking about. Plus he can afford to do some crazy things that the hobby in general just doesn't like m
Honestly, I’d have trouble not ripping most of them.
To be completly honest since myself and so many others are having a rough go of it I would keep one and then donate abunch of the funds to people who really need help

What a find,those stashes!!
When my great grandfather moved into a nursing home, we cleaned out the house. There was a dirt patch in the basement we dug up and found multiple Mason jars of a few thousand crumbling dollars from the Depression era that we swapped at the bank. Also had a few old comics and football cards from the 60's and 70's, but were in poor shape unfortunately. Was exciting to go through, just painful to see the Payton rookie stuck to a rogue sticker.

Scoops are great. Affordable vintage, and each card looks like the front page of a newspaper. Best route for a Mantle at a reasonable price.
Loved it, I have some unopened stuff too, waiting until I need the money.
It's unthinkable that someone could have lived through the 80s-90s (cards and card talk was everywhere) and still never mentioned or thought about telling someone about these old cards in the attic.
I know! And yet these stories are still out there.
I think its feasible. If the old man didn't care about it as a hobby or curiosity, and was just looking at it as a business idea, picked up a few boxes here and there just to open a few and see what he thought, didn't think much/enough of it, threw em in a box (cuz hey, he paid for em), life went on...I can see that. Great story, though, no matter what.
Back around 1990 a buddy of mine came across an unopened box of 1970 Topps football wax packs at a candy distributor. I don't remember the unopened value of them at that time

Yep would save 1 and sell the rest. That’s probably best attic find story I’ve ever heard. Wow, was shocked to hear the last sale of the 1948 box at a loss. If only he seller would have waited til 2021 to sell!!!

I think it would be a great book that details major card finds through the years. The greatest find, I think, was Alan Rosen buying thousands of mint 1952 Topps in the late 80s.

That Rosen (Mr. Mint) find is by far the biggest unopened find ever.

We found something like that at my Grandmother's house.....in the basement, AFTER the flood, a box of water-soaked "Silver Age" comics.They ALL had to be thrown OUT.

lol we just hit 15 years in ours. The first thing I did when I moved in was check the attic for cool things. Haven’t been back up there since.

NO risk.....no gain...but sometimes it's better to just "stand pat" and enjoy what you have instead of trying to get EVEN more money for it.
Nu Card Scoops cards, are the Baseball Scoops cards. They are pretty reasonable to buy. The Mantle is really cool! Thanks for sharing!

I bought a full unopened box of those 1961 NuCard Scoops at an antique shop in Holden, MA back in 1975 for $5. I still have some of the cards. But in hindsight, I wish I never opened them.

Someone probably already mentioned it, but back in the day (late 90s?) I remember Mark Murphy ("The Baseball Card Kid") making big hobby news when he bought an unopened box of 1952 topps from an old lady. Still some info around if you Google it. I used to buy unopened stuff from him here and there, and he used that story pretty heavily in his own marketing. I wish I had saved some of his old flyers and catalogs.

This is a great story, really enjoyed it! I would probably have a very difficult time not opening up a pack like this. Do you remember about 15-20 years ago there was a midwest find of dozens upon dozens of 1952 Bowman Large Football sets? I've been trying to find the article about it and can't seem to. If there's one wrapper, I'd want to own it would be a 1933 DeLong. I think there might be 5 known. Come to think of it, George C. Miller here in Boston has 3 known, so maybe one of those. Hey I can dream...Excellent video. Oh, look up the Ernie Davis in the 1961 Nu Card Scoops.

@@JunkWaxHero Oh well, they made that movie about him called "The Express" in 2008 about his life and untimely passing before he could play for the Browns. That card is on a lot of want lists.

So Dr James Beckett is a very approachable guy. I've even had some conversations with him via email. I know you'd consider yourself a nobody in the hobby, but the reality is not a lot of people are clambering for an interview with Dr beckett. It seem like a long shot, but I'd consider asking him. I watch his vids and as I've said I've a couple conversations with him and he strikes me as just a guy whom needs to have cards be a part of his life until he's 6 ft under. He's rich so whatever he does is just about passion for the hobby. Check out his videos, they get 100 views. He's not unapproachable.

Not sure about keeping any packs. I do know that if I were choosing any of those boxes (knowing zero about which is more rare), I’d by far want the 61/62 fleer basketball box.

I would open one and keep one sealed. I have one wax pack from 84 to about 00, kinda got out of hobby then. Still pick up one that I don't have it I find one.

1961 Nu-Card Baseball Scoops is an 80 card set. The cards looks like a newspapers front page headliner with a black and white pictures of the players, Black bold "Baseball Scoops" Lettering and Red Lettering headlines. The cards are 2.5 by 3.5 inches in size.

Mike, great content as always! The 1961 Nu-Card Scoops is one of my favorite obscure sets of all time. While is is mostly filled with all time greats, there are a couple of Mantle’s in there. Where else can you get a Mantle from his playing career in nice shape for under $100?

Being a lifelong Cardinals fan that named a child Stanley, I might have to crack a pack or two of that '48 Bowman hoping for the high-grade Musial RC. At roughly $32,000/pack.

Knew a guy Zeke after Korean War started working for Topps. Got to keep all the cards that were left over from servicing stores with cards. Had thousands of boxes from 1952-1978. Wooden storage shed he kept them in caught fire and burned to ground. Did seem to bother him at all, he thought they were basically worthless after handling them for so long.

A pack of 10 cards cost $3 or more. Used to be .50c for 15cards and without the prospects of hitting a one-of-one that sells for tens of thousands of dollars. Instead of a set of 800 cards you have several sets of the same few hundred guys. Its set up like gambling not learning about the game, players, teams involved.

Back around 1979, I attended a card show, in Chicago. This was an early show for me. There was a dealer there that had several boxes of 5c, Series 1, '52 Topps baseball. He was selling them only as packs. I can't exactly remember the price per pack. I think that it was $35 or 3 for $100. Limit 3. I bought 3. Found a couple of semi-stars. I still have the wrappers. I also have the cards but cannot remember which ones they were.

Cards were really cheap until about 1984 or so. Now they are crazy expensive. My '52 set grades at least an 8 or9. Took me years to put together. I could not afford to replace it unless I rob my 401K or my savings account.
What is funny is that if you go by that timeframe, it is equivalent to buying 1986 packs today. You can get packs of 1986 Topps for about 4 dollars.
Just 2 years or so ago 1986 Topps packs were a $1!

The owner of the box opened a pack and the cards doubled up 2 Warren Spahn rookies I know. He also sold 5 packs to pack collectors.
Nu card scoops were kind of like the backs of 1964 giant cards-with a newspaper style headline on the front then a brief story on the back. That box is probably the lowest end version of anything in that attic find though. If I'm thinking of the right cards they are white on the front and kind of glossy going over historic moments in baseball history up to that time.

I remember that auction well. I was a psa collectors club member so I got the catalog in the mail. Nu scoops was more of an interesting set for football because it has a couple of HOF rookies. Chuck noll the hof coach of the steelers is the 1st to come to mind of course since I'm an oddball guy I have his team issue rookie which pre-dates the nu scoops. 🤣

Id keep them sealed. Maybe someday when I (ObsessedCollector) complete my 1948-1990 Topps/Bowman run we can do an interview. Why? Well because I intend to complete all these sets WITHOUT eBay! NO cheating. I'm about 60% done! 1974, 1976-1990 100% done. 1968-1973 70% done. 1957-1967 45% done and 1948-1956 35% done.

First off you never know how it's going to go you could end up interviewing Mike Trout someday. When I was 16 I drove Mickey Mantle back home to Loma Linda from Hidden Acres nightclub. Just imagine a sixteen-year-old kid who loves collecting baseball cards driving Mickey Mantle back home to his house.. sorry for the misspelling the lack of punctuation it's early I just woke up by the way I just subscribed and gave you a thumbs up.

As a collector who focuses on unopened this video was definitely worth the extra days wait. These items are relics, survivors- so cool. There’s a graded 52 Topps listed on EBay right now for 63k or B.O. - crazy! Thanks for sharing , love the attic finds segments and looking forward to more interesting interviews.

It’s one of the rarer packs - depending on the grade averages around 1,500-2k. Memory Lane auctions just sold a 1962 Mars Attacks unopened wax pack - extremely rare in a PSA 8 for 66,699.
