I’ve had every Pixel since the 2. I still keep the 2 and 3 around as handy cameras. The main difference over the generations that I’ve tested is increasing sharpness and improving dynamic range. But they’re all superior to anything competing at the time. After Pixel 4 you can see the loss of Marc Levoy’s influence - less of the artistic contrast manipulation and more generic balancing. All are still quite usable point and shoot cameras

I had Pixel 2XL Panda, used it for 5 years and 2 months and it was the most magical gadget feeling I could ever have with a mobile, fun fact- even on 2 percent battery I could speak on call for more than 30 minutes, and I have done it like countless times, that phone was really really technical marvel, for almost 10 years every phone company are marketing on their phone's camera and selling that but Google really made a leap of advancement, I have done many small shoots on my phone and people were shocked by the results of its phots & videography, it was mind-blowing. Another fun fact- after dropping my 2XL on floors like 100s of time, then only the glass at its back shattered a little from the edge, otherwise it was really a piece of stone that was stubborn as hell. I really miss my 2XL, and now I am owning a Pixel 6a, its obviously not as great as my older phone but it is yet another fine piece of machinery. Love the Pixels. #TeamPixel

The screen on the 7 pro is curved at the edges but not excessively so and adds to the overall premium feel. Stylistically, I still think the Pixel 1 is the best. It has the more contrasty look that was also present in its predecessors, the Nexus 5X and 6P, right in line with the work of,Google's Computer Graphics Engineer Marc Levoy, who pioneered the work in their HDR technology from 2011 to 2020, culminating in the HDR algorithms used on Nexus 5, 5X, 6P, Pixel and onwards. Amongst his inspirations when working on the project Levoy cited the rennaisance period paintings which featured deep shadows and saturated highlights, while still preserving details, which meant dark shadow regions that while being very dark would still not clip to black. Later Pixels, from the 2 onwards, seemed to start favoring the overall market trend of "bright and saturated = better", foregoing much of the style pioneered by their early projects.

  • @LukeVesty

I still can't get past the fact that Google takes the "clarity slider" effect too far in its image processing. It seems to be getting worse and worse with every generation. It's especially noticeable on people and makes facial features look garish. The original pixel does the best job, in my view, of keeping skin and facial features looking natural in the portrait shots in the forest. The Pixel 6-8 just look straight up bad. It's not natural or true to life at all. I own the pixel 6 and so often when I go to take a shot of my daughter I'm happy with what I see the in viewfinder, but when I click the shutter button and Google's ISP does its thing the final image looks really disappointing. I would love for Google to introduce some shooting profiles that dial back the heavy handed processing and leave me to do my own adjustments if I deem it necessary. In low light it's no contest - the newer Pixel devices are superior. But in good light I feel the older phones with their less aggressive processing just do a much better job with people and portraits. I'm not talking about cut outs, just the way skin, dynamic range and texture is rendered.

I agree. At some point I felt frustrated by the lack of naturalness in these over-processed photos, so I try to take my very compact Ricoh GR3 camera with me as often as possible. I still have a Pixel 4a which is a great workhorse for most phone tasks, but if I want a really pleasing picture with that evasive "magic", I know what I have to do.

Que vídeo maravilhoso! Congratulations to everyone involved, especially the presenter. What caught my attention the most was seeing the quality of the images from the older Pixels (XL, 2 and 3), how they were so far ahead of their competitors at the time and how they still produce great images today. I had the Pixel 2, 3, 5 and 7 and I remember being impressed by the night photography of the 3 (when night vision was introduced) and its selfie with autofocus, which was later removed and only returned in the 8. I also remember the noticeable drop in quality of the selfies on the Pixel 5, when compared to the 3, the lack of frequent focus. However, I remember how good the battery was on the Pixel 5 and how good its finish was, to the point that sometimes I didn't even use a case to protect it. Even with its ups and downs, I really like the Pixel line and I intend to return to them in the 10th generation.

    Interesting comparison mate.
Photography is a cool hobby , on past occasions I have pulled out all of my old phones that still work and tested the camera’s out , and have in some instances been surprised at how good some of the oldies where at a certain photography task.
One of my favourite tests was picking a couple of different coins and placing them on a table and seeing which camera can pull up the most detail , in one particular test my old galaxy note 9 was able to give my 4 years newer phone a real run for its money picking up the most amazing amount of detail when you pixel peeped .
The thing about cameras as you mentioned, it’s not just about the size of the sensor , the software makes a big difference too.
Up until a couple of years ago occasionally I would pull out my galaxy note 2 and wander out in the driveway and take a few random picks just to see what a 9 or 10 year old smartphone could do , and there’s no doubt the old old smart cameras in anything but ideal conditions where not great , but in decent light you could still get a happy snap worth keeping, finally the battery completely gave up the ghost on my old note 2 ( R I P note 2😊)
I still have my old nexus 6p which only works if I keep it plugged into a charger , another dead battery , but as I remember it the 6p actually had not a bad camera . My old 6p other than the battery is still in pristine condition, I’m tempted to see if I can source another battery for it for shits and giggles.
I haven’t done much photography with my pixel 8 pro unfortunately, life has a way of keeping busy.
My young brother has a pixel 7 , he went bush a while ago and took a photo with some nice scenery behind his new car , and I have to say , it was a photo worth framing … it was that good .
Amazing the pics you can get out of a smartphone ay.
    Good video mate .
    Cheers.

For me, Pixel 4Xl is, and still a great phone.

    -New USB-C port
    -New display/chassis assy
I just have to transfert all part from the old chassis assy to the new one.
I love it for many reasons:
-For it's look (Black and White) and it's shape
-The camera: still perform really well
-Face ID: in the dark, with sunlight, it's working fricking fast and no issue at all.

Google destroyed the Pixel 6 and 7 Camera in recent updates. If you try to capture in normal light or less than ideal, the post-processing will darken the image to extreme. Your eyes will become black, you're going to see shadows where there weren't before and there will be many details lost for no reason. It's like a burnt and darken filter is applied. This has an even bigger effect on the selfie camera.
I'm surprised that no one is talking about this issue since it rendered the camera useless with no way to revert it even with installing older versions of the camera app.

For example, while the video focused on highlight roll off for the sky through the rocky structure at 6:43, if you look at rhe grass at the bottom, its quite a bit more detailed on the 8P whereas it's quite slotchy on the 7P. Google claim that they've rebuilt their HDR pipeline from the "ground up" so I'll be interested to see if that affects things.

Pixel 8 Pro can't shoot the moon anymore. Its just a blurry/pixelated mess. I've gotten better results using the pro settings, but not nearly as good as how they used to be on auto night sight.
I don't know enough about photography to get the best out of pro modes and it's one of the reasons why I chose Pixel over Samsung. The just shoot and trust the result reviewers talk about is not a reality for me.

I just bought a pixel 7a last month. And I am struggling to take good photos 😒
I don't understand why the hell photos look cool in the viewfinder but loses all the colour (washed out) once the photo is saved post processing. This is really disgusting from a brand like Google!

They're all different and they're to be appreciated in their own way considering their release date.
I have been shooting with Google phones since the Nexus 4. Managed to snag a few stunners that I thought weren't possible because HDR+ was barely rolling out
Also, isn't the Pixel 8 Pro using a Samsung ISOCELL GNK, and not the GN1?

Well, stock pixel camera app suck. Noisy with some artifacting or theres this cloudy/mushy sections in the edges. I'd rather use modified pixel camera a.k.a Modded Gcam for better photos.
