Had a Tascam 424 just like this one 30 yrs ago. It's simple but does the trick. makes you sound like a one man band. But I lent it to a buddy of mine. Who somehow managed to tear it up. Take care of it man. They really knew how to build them back in those days.
I just got this exact recorder. Someone had it in their closet for years. Never played with it. It was a gift to them that they never really learned how to use. So lucky I found it.
Closet classic. Have fun!
Thanks! Got one today for free. Excited to play with it.
It's great to see resources for old gear like this being shared around still. I've had a 424 for a long while (the same model you have), but totally forgot how to use it. :)
Thanks for watching, skroops! Here's to recording with your 424!
Hey dude, real question, would you be willing to part with that to a musician who would give it a new life recording a ton of music again? Elliott Smith was my hero and I love the sound of this unit on Roman Candle.

Just bought one of these with a set of Tascam Porta Monitor S-1010M speakers and a box full of different cables and tapes for $9. I didn't know what it was but I was sure it was worth $9. Now I know what it is and how to test it, thanks.
Hope you enjoy it, Big Josh! I'll have to check out your gaming channel. I wanna see those monitors at work! Happy recording, thanks for watching!
Got one today for 20€. Working!! Need to clean it and get the manual :D So happy! Thanks for the tips
My pleasure! Nice score! Happy recording!
Where? How?
@@hubblebublumbubwub5215 Exactly ! Still hunting for one that doesn't cost $ 350
I'm so effing jealous.
@@Robinexs Me and you mate.
I just got one of these and it didn't come with the original power supply. In this video are you using a 12v that aligns with the tascams power supply specs? or are you using the original power supply?
Thanks, great video. I’m torn about which version of the 424 to hunt down. I’m not especially fussed about the additional features of the MKII and MKIII (I’m sure I could adapt the way I recorded to each one), but did you notice any difference in the sound/sonic quality of your MKI vs MKIII?
Thanks for watching. I've never noticed a discernible difference. In terms of features each one has its pros and cons. I will say though, that there does seem to be a difference from machine to machine; I have two mkiiis and they sound different on playback to me, especially if I record on one and playback on the other. I would get whichever one you can for a reasonable price and start recording! Cheers, MmBuddha
Good info. Unfortunately, so many of these machines on the market are in pretty rough shape these days.
Truth bomb, David
I still have one of these.
Very nice
Thanks
Hi, I have a question, can I use XLR to jack input? Says I want to record guitar amp or vocal using SM58? If yes, does it affects the sound quality?
Yeah, you can do that but you'll probably need a preamp to raise the volume back up. Check out the ART Tube MP. Cheers!
On my 424 mk3 while the tape is playing the physical playing is making noise. Is that normal. I’m assuming the rotors?
Nice Silvertone!
Thanks Zach! My pride and joy 🤓
thanks for the vid! do you know any good songs/records that have been recorded on the 424? all the random demos on youtube sound like shit, and id like to get an idea of how good of a sound the 424 can produce
My pleasure! Check out the forum... there's a thread started regarding this: www.424recording.com/forum/index.php?topic=10.0
Hey 424 Recording. Thanks for making all these great videos! I've got a quick, possible silly question, as I'm looking for a good first machine: With the original 424, can you record through all 4 lines simultaneously whilst busing onto one track, as you mention in your video "Tascam 424 mkiii 4-track: Inputs 5 & 6"?
My pleasure! Yeah, you can do that. The mixer on both machines pretty much works the same. Good luck and thanks for watching!
424 Recording Awesome, thanks! Keep rockin'
My pleasure. You, too
Hey man i have the 488 I was wondering if it’s possible to bus? I was following your effect pedal video trying to play track 1 and 2 to track 3. Any helps appreciated thanks man!
Hey I'm not sure about the 488... I would think that it would be a similar process, though?
I'm wondering if you could tell me the what type of power supply this takes? I am missing mine, and want to make sure i get the right replacement. Having trouble finding this answer online. Would be a huge help. Thanks!
Search this on eBay 12V Tascam 424MkI Portastudio replacement power supply. Cheers!
Just got one of these yesterday, everything seems to work fine but the record button does nothing!
Hey there, I have the same exact tape deck. I'm having an issue with getting a stereo mix out on it. I can mix and pan left and right, get the stereo mix out from the back of the unit and through the headphone jack, but when I run the signal into my interface to get my tracks onto my DAW, the panning work I did doesn't come through. You ever experience this?
Did you pan the tracks in the DAW?
Hey man great video!! i just bought the MK1 a everything was working fine but suddenly the lid doesn't stay locked down, so its always open. Any tips for this ?
Thanks, ted! Yeah, I think the lids are faulty on these. I'd make sure that part of the plastic didn't break or something. Thanks for watching!
You can disable the spring that holds it open and maybe glue a little knob on the front
Hi 424 recording. Got a question. Just set up my 424 mki after some idle time, and I’m not getting any tape playback. Meters aren’t picking up any sound either, when I’ve tested the meters with mics they seem to be working
Is there any chance that during the "idle time" that moisture could have gotten in it? I had that happen with a 16 track, and it wasn't very much moisture at all. Also, could you possibly have dropped it, banged it, dropped something on it, or maybe had a pet lay on it? I've had that happen too, and that can cause things to need to be sauterd. This are usually the two biggest problems with these, moisture and/ or impact.
Heya ! Nice vid. I was wondering about the track at the beginning ? Is that you as well ? c ya !
Yeah! That's my buddy, Sean. You can download the track here if ya want: 424recording.bandcamp.com 🤓thanks for watching!
Hey, what are the main differences between tascam 424 MK1 and mk2 , I`m finding comparisons between mk2 and mk3 but no one talks about the original one ! I want to use it as instrument, probably with casette loops. I´m really looking up to to the speed down, and I dont know how much significant is the deal of not having 4 individual outputs, or the eq section.
Hey I would get in contact with Klingerhult; they're a band that uses 424's as an instrument. This should be the link to their channel: czcams.com/channels/y1D9ADNyMngNsrcrqJh-jw.html
For me, the main difference is the lack of XLR inputs on the MKI. The controls feel a bit more resilient as well. The metering section is different in appearance. I'd say if you're looking to use the 424 as an instrument, get any version, just make sure it's in good working order! Good luck!
Thank you !

Hey 424 recording,
Is it possible to run a mk1 424 on a mk2 power supply?
Hey great video i just have one question on the back there is a switch i think its line out and tape out so when im recording i should have that on line out and when im listening back to the tape should that be on tape. out?
Thanks, Justin. If I remember correctly, that's for the line out. So you can either use the on board mixing (line out) or go directly out from what you recorded on the tape (tape out). For most applications, I would imagine you would want that switch on line out (unless you want the raw recorded tape tracks)
hey thanks so when im recording i think its obvious that i switch it to line out because i have mine connected to a venice midas mixing desk but when i am listening back to the recorded tape should i have it in tape out or line out? Still new to this so bare with me
thanks
@@justp303 If you're using the midas to mix, you could do either. The only difference is with line out, you'll still be able to use the 424 mix controls but tape out should bypass the 424 mix controls and just playback exactly what's recorded to the tape into the midas. So it probably doesn't matter if you don't touch the mix on the 424. Happy recording!
@@424Recording thanks man appreciate it!
My pleasure!
When switched to tape on each for tracks when switched to tape track volume meter should show no volume even when moving fader up??
That doesn't sound right but it's been a while since my 424 worked
Hey, trying to decide between the MKI and MKIII. Leaning towards the MKI but does it have a timestamp like the later models? What’s that small screen with the numbers up the top? Thanks!
The small screen is an analog counter for the tape position. II and III have the timestamp on the screen, I believe. The other big consideration is the III has XLR ins and the I only has 1/4". Thanks for watching! Good luck!
424 Recording probably a stupid question, but does the analog counter move on it’s own, or is it somewhat a ‘manual’ counter? I don’t mind if there’s no time stamp, just an indicator of where I am on the tape would be good. And if I have 1/4” to TRS leads and an external mixer with XLR inputs, I can still get by right? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks for your help
Yes and yes! My pleasure. Glad to help 🤓
@@424Recording I ended up going with the 424 MKI and was wondering if you had a How-To video on recording with the MKI specifically? Ive been through all the videos a few times and cant seem to find one and just wanted to see how you personally do it. All of your videos are super helpful. Thanks again!
how do you record direct bass or guitar or any of dat?
Hey peyton, check out my first video: should help answer your question! czcams.com/video/4Nx6FJyq_L8/video.html
Hi, I have a 424 I've had since it was new but I no longer have the power adapter. Do you know what it needs to make it work? I'm in North America. Thanks!
Go to eBay and search "tascam 424 power adapter". You should be able to find what you need. Happy recording
@@424Recording great, thank you! I didn't even think of that.
Yeah, that one is commonly available I think. The mkii is hardwired and the mkiii was extremely hard to find for a while but I think there is one out there now. Cheers!
@@424Recording thanks!
nice guitar
Thanks!
Can you please make a video on breaking the tascam? I’m really frustrated with my tascam but I don’t wanna destroy it because I don’t wanna get a new one. Since you have some extras laying around please make video on destroy
I've actually thought about doing that. The one in this video doesn't work anymore. Two out of the three that I have are not functioning properly
424 Recording haha I was just messing with you but shit if u do it I’ll still watch! If u fix up your mk1 or replace it I’d love to see videos on it since that seems to be the most popular and the most temperamental model
Haha yeah I was joking, too! But I know the frustration. My mki just stopped recording one day. I think it needs a new motor or something. Maybe some day!
Hey, just got one of these. Is the capstan motor supposed be continuously running? When I pop in a tape, it eats my tape and gets tangled and destroys my tape. Any ideas on why?
Damn mine is always running too but never with that result. That's weird. What kind of tape are you putting in there?
424 Recording I just used a pre recorded cassette album like Bjork’s Debut or J Dilla’s Donuts
@@briancollado3167 Oh gotcha. I would try a Type II and see if it makes any difference
Mine is always running too, don’t have a problem with playing back or recording tho. I’ve put in type Is and type IIs in the machine before, doesn’t make a difference.
I bought a 464 today and I'm having a problem. I plugged my guitar direct in and have my headphones in and I have to crank the Trim knob basically all the way up to hear anything/get the meters moving that cant be normal right?
Totenkopf 2541 where do you have the channel and master fader set? Make sure the line out switch is on L-R or mono
@@424Recording I have the faders in the shaded area. I got it to record to tape but the meters dont even light up until the trim is 95% up
@@424Recording the trim knob has to be all the way up and at that point its distorting bad. The meters dont even show up on the screen until the trim knob is all the way up either. I just dropped 250$ on this thing yesterday...really upset right now haha.
Damn, that sucks. So is just the metering not working properly? Like not lighting up? Does the same thing happen on other channels?
@@424Recording the meters light up but only when the trim knob is way up. It still records ok though which is weird. Haven't tried to mic my cab yet and see how the mic level reads.
Is there a reason why a normal 12v power supply won’t work and a tascam adapter power supply will ?
Thank you
Might be the milliamps of the adapter
@@424Recording thank you very much for the reply , love the videos
channels 2 and 4 on my mkiii wont record as loud as 1 and 3... i think.
honestly not sure if its me or the 424...
any suggestions?
oh and the 424 mkiii was in a sealed box and the machine was still in the plastic with the manual when i bought it.
Jeremy Sollod whoa museum piece... excellent! So when you record to tape the playback is lower on those tracks? Or is the volume lower as you're recording with the channel?
424 Recording the playback is lower. this is my first 4 track so its kind of hard to tell what the issue is.
would recording over stuff previously recorded onto the right channel effect the level of the new take?
What kind of tape are you using? Is it a fresh tape?
I have this exact unit and it no longer powers on, anybody help please
silvertone crew unite.
that model is can be used as a player
cool but what about the taco just lying there
Saving that for later
