I would like to see Gatorade make a commercial with young Serena and "old" Serena like they did with young Jordan and old Jordan. Young Serena was about punishing you with power and showing her speed. Young Serena would would never do a drop shot. Old Serena is about using angles, bringing the power out when needed and willing to go to the net. Old Serena is the better of the two.

This match right here is a prime example of why the Williams sisters were simply better than Capriati. They were mentally stronger. Capriati broke Serena 3 times in the first set, and had a chance to serve it out. Serena broke back each time, and won the set. Capriati had 2 chances to serve out the second set. Serena broke back each time, and saved 7 set points. A year earlier against Venus, she served for the match twice, and had 8 MPs. Venus broke back each time, and eventually won.
People comment on Jennifer's forehand being great... but her backhand downtheline really was amazing in this match. Love these two going at it! Awesome match... too bad Capriati let her fitness slip so much after this year.

Serena won 8 consecutive matches against Capriati from late 2001-2003. Capriati made the head to head more respectable in 2004 when she beat Serena 3 times. But we all know that the Serena of 2004 was nowhere near as good as the Serena from 2002-2003. Capriati could not beat the dominant Serena of 2002-2003.
I remember this match... serena has beaten Hingis and venus at ease earlier in the tournament and was playing at her peak before this match... This match coulda gone either way because Capriati was up in both sets and in the second set, Capriati had 11 set points....
Yeah Serena today would crush 2002 Serena. 2002 Serena might be faster, but it would not matter...2012 Serena would make sure most of the shots are nowhere near 2002 Serena...from the word go. Every racket in 2002 Serena's bag would be demolished due to incessant frustration. Which honestly really puts her greatness into perspective. Serena, at half the ability that she has now, literally dominated the tour.
These were good rivalries: Serena vs. Capriati & Venus vs. Davenport, always entertaining matches. Now, WTA doesn't have much going for it. I'm glad Serena seems to be back to a good level (amazing when compared to the other players.)
I think we might have a decent top 4 going now, Serena, Sharpova, Azarenka and Kvitova. Nothing compared to these glory days (add Clijsters, Henin, Maruesmo, Seles, Pierce and Hingis to your list), but still interesting enough if they start building some history.

Even though there is a lot of people who don't like Capriati, I really miss her competitive spirit on court. Nowadays there are no good rivalries between the top players and no one is really strong enough to hold the #1 in the rankings. It looks like it's all about the prize money. I'm not sure that the Williamses can go back to the top, because they are not playing a lot of tournaments, which keeps them from climbing in the rankings.

Serena is one of the most perfect examples of a person not always winning while playing their best (which is most of her wins over the last 3-4 years), and also winning alot when playing nowhere near their best (1999, 2002-2003)...her results from 2000-2001 support my theory that despite winning 6 slams + alot of other titles in those 4 years, she was nowhere near the best form of her career....closer to it in 2002-2003, but still not quite there yet.
