  • @lu881

    South Africa's inclusion is honestly more for influence, than economic.
    South Africa has always been the most industrialised nation in Africa, and its political climate is a lot more stable.
    Whereas with the other two African candidates mentioned, one -Nigeria has militants that are occupying the countries resources such as the oil field, and the other -Ethiopia was still at war with Eritrea, and was thus in the process of creating stability.
    All of this, plus the fact that South Africa is part of the G20 (the only African country by the way), adds more weight to their case.
    But still, the economic situation is rather disappointing.

    The fact that a union with 9 times the population of the U.S. had a lower GDP than the U.S. (even a year ago) just shows how ridiculously rich the United States is. And yet they still don’t have universal healthcare or proper social networks, nor do they invest as much in things like renewables than even China alone (less than two thirds as much) despite blaming China and India for climate change despite China taking more action than the United States (whilst having half the emissions per capita) and India literally emitting marginally less than the U.S. despite having over four times the population.

    The only obvious thing to make BRICS work efficiently is that they should start a new way of relating with each other on all levels, not just economics.
    One way would be to start considering their borders as unnatural as they really are.
    What is the point for China and India fighting over a territory that should belong to both, and in turn to the entire planet?
    Another way would be to work out the so called religious differences.
    Religion has kept all of us, religious or not, separated for thousands of years and it has been one of the main reasons, if not the only one, at war with each other.
    BRICS is a huge step forward on solving these "differences" and it is a breath of fresh air in a world that it has been trying the "old fashion way" for too long.
    Greetings from Toronto.

    I hope it really will be a multipolar world! I don't want to offend any of the people of the collective West, but they have committed so much crime and none of the mechanisms of international law works if it goes against the interests of Europe and the United States! And what is happening now between Russia and Ukraine should put an end to all this! Nowhere in the Western media do they want to talk about what people living in the southeastern part of Ukraine, Donbass, were going through. Ukraine split and the West was set on European integration and the southeast wanted independence and is friendly to Russia. And while they were bombed and killed in the southeast, no one imposed sanctions on Ukraine and did not even talk about it because it is in the interests of the United States and Europe! I hope this is the last war on our land and I am making peace to everyone in the future 🙏

      Also, there is NO justification for what Russia has done to Ukraine. What a weak attempt to try and excuse Russia. Lol, no one imposed sanctions on Ukraine, because Ukraine hasnt done anything wrong. Russia thinks Ukraine should be part of Russia. You cant just grab land because you think it belongs to you. That's what this is all about. Also, you cant go to another sovereign country and bomb hospitals, schools, residential buildings, infrastructure.

      The problem is that in all honesty, BRICS just doesn't really standard much of a chance. Two of its members only get along in photo-ops (China and India), one is about to become a literal failed state (South Africa), and one is economically weak and also otherwise totally isolated from the rest (Brazil). There is no way to formulate a shared policy framework outside of their general distaste for the West. Outside of that none of them are likely to reach a real level of cooperation and as each has very unilateral interests with China and Russia both being semi-colonial states. It's just not realistic.

    I find it kind of odd that South Africa makes it on this list to be honest, when it has a lower GDP growth than almost the entire rest of Africa, and a pretty modest GDP growth rate in general. The same also goes for Russia which seems pretty stagnant overall. I guess the countries are chosen for influence rather than economic growth?

    • @economicsinaction
      @economicsinaction  Před 3 lety +6

      I agree with you there! Perhaps a more populous nation like Nigeria or Ethiopia would have made more sense as an African representative from an economic and demographic viewpoint. In the case of Russia, despite its underachieving economy it's still home to an impressive amount of natural resources and it yields significant influence, so I'd argue that they have a seat at the table for strategic reasons.

    Does Algeria's economy recommend it to be a member of BRICS?

    • @economicsinaction
      @economicsinaction  Před rokem +1

      Algeria's economy is strongly linked to the export of its hydrocarbons. Expanding connections to export natural gas through Italy to the rest of the EU would perhaps be the easiest way to boost exports. But ultimately the Algerian economy needs to be reformed to reinvest more from the sale of its hydrocarbons back into Algeria, there is nothing specifically that joining the BRICS would change :)

      There has been no progress since I uploaded this video. Tensions between India and China have not received a long term solution and India has reaffirmed it is occupied with working on its own strategic goals/interests. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has strained relations between China and Russia, showing the extent to which China is willing to support Russia. Brazil has had a significant change in direction from Bolsonaro to Lula, it will still of course be a member of BRICS but it will also act in its own interest and not to a common BRICS goal. It is a group of convenience like many intergovernmental groups and when interests do not align, results do not come.

    I remember Goldman Sachs, Cheif Economist, Jim O'Neil when he coined the acronym term B.R.I.C.S., for which h even thought that I would be just another investment back in 2001. However, due to America's hubris, indifference, cronyism, aggression, threats, bullying, sanctions, military invasions, corruption, arrogance an exceptionalism; B.R.I.C.S. along with its New Development Bank (N.D.B.) attracted many other nations to join, while others expressed their interest to join the the near future. Today there's Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (A.I.I.B.) and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (S.C.O.) for which many nations around the world share their desire to join. I do suspect that the West will resist to the very end, but if the membership prevails then the U.S. Dollar will no longer be the world's reserve currency. Now Egypt, Indonesia, Bangledesh, Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates and others are more than willing to be invited to the B.R.I.C.S. Summit in August of 2023. If this summit succeeds, then what was once conceived as a pipe dream in view of the West, would be a significant economic, cultural and even military allience to be reckoned with by the West.

      @economicsinaction  Před rokem +1

      Those figures are incorrect. If we take the IMF January 2023 publication as an example growth figures for 2022 and 2023 in the USA and Russia are the following:
      2022
      USA | +2%
      Russia | -2.2%
      2023 (Projection)
      USA | +1.4%
      Russia | +0.3%
      Russia is to experience very little economic growth this year in part due to the massive increase in public spending for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Without the significant involvement of the Russian state in driving demand within the economy, Russia's GDP figures would be negative. And if the private sector didn't receive this significant increase in demand to manufacturer capital (that has no positive long term impact on future productivity) then it would probably continue shrinking by even more. You can find a link to the IMF's figures below:

      In short, the BRICS is a grouping of emerging markets with regional geopolitical power (and global in the case of China). Canada is neither an emerging market and at a regional level it is the USA who call the shots. In addition to that, the BRICS has a strategic goal of providing alternatives to western institutions, again, Canada is an integrated member of the West. In short, their interests don't align
