  • With many of the same features and amenities of the beloved CR-V, but in a more manageable subcompact SUV body style, the 2025 Honda HR-V is sure to please. Inside, it boasts the anticipated connectivity and driver-assistance capabilities, as well as a spacious and attractive cabin with plenty of storage cubbies. One of the slowest subcompact crossovers, the HR-V is mostly disappointing due to its continuously variable automatic transmission and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. We're keeping our fingers crossed that a more powerful hybrid model will be available in the future, but in the meanwhile, this powertrain is all the HR-V has to offer, which might put off people who enjoy driving. Check out the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30 if you're looking for a more entertaining little crossover.
In the United States, we can only buy the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 158 horsepower; however, a hybrid version of the HR-V is available in other markets. If that sounds familiar, it's because the Civic sedan and hatchback use the same engine as their base powertrain. In the heavier and roomier HR-V, this engine seems especially sluggish. The SUV and the Civic share a basis, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that a hybrid or a 1.5-liter turbo-four with 180 horsepower will be available in the future. Although all-wheel drive is a possible option on all trim levels, the base setup now includes front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
In our acceleration tests, the HR-V reached 60 mph after a sluggish 9.4 seconds. The more potent non-turbo Mazda CX-30 is more than a full second faster. You can feel the HR-V's lack of power every time you try to pass on a two-lane road or merge onto a highway. The base price of a 2025 Honda HR-V ranges from $26.450 to $30.550. The exact amount depends on the trim level and the options chosen. At less than $30,000, the Sport trim level provides the most bang for the buck, with a few additional features included as standard equipment compared to the base LX. The black 18-inch wheels are a nice touch as well. No matter the trim level, all-wheel drive will cost an additional $1500.
