Oooh, I'm so happy he decides to take singing lessons! He has one of the most interesting voices of his generation but not training. Of course, a few months can not take away some things but it's possitive, so I can't wait to listen to the performance on ESC.

His voice is not “tight”, he uses his diaphragm in the beginning of the song to create that sound, very typical for rock singers. This is a good rock song, melodical with interesting built-ups and instrumentation. He has a a unique and recognizable rock sound. This will quality to ESC final and I predict it to do pretty well.

  • @Pogohg
    @Pogohg Před 2 lety +62

Alright, so The Rasmus' lyrics are always a little odd and open ended, but they usually have a kind of signature. As far as I can tell, Jezebel is about a woman who parties a lot and lures men into one-night-stands, and the lyrics are from one of these men's perspective.
As for Lauri's vocals, they've never been that good live. They often sound weak and don't really come out too well, but he has a lot of stage pressence. He also often sings like he has a cold, which you can hear in studio recordings as well.
They're still my favourite band, though, so none of this really matters to me. I've listened to their music since I was very little, and seeing them in Eurovision still excites me. Can't wait to see them in the semi-final, and hopefully the finale

For a dude that's mostly into metal core, this song and performance totally got me by surprise. It's eurovision so i'm not sure what kind of lyrical depth you were expecting. I like the honesty in his live vocal execution, he's definitely got a set of lungs on him. And I totally dig their new guitarist, she rocks...what a performer! I'm not usually into catchy stuff so I'm surprised at how much I like this. I do think your critiques of his vocal work are a way off. The technical aspects you might not like are exactly what give him his unique character. The live 'tightness' could have everything to do with running around stage compared to the very open sound he delivers in the studio version. Even the top end of swedish death metal vocalists will sound a bit compressed when bouncing around.

So excited for the rest of the songs to be released. Never was super into Eurovision but since 3 or 4 years I watch it with my boyfriend and just following the news around it and listening to the songs coming out one by one just creates so much more fun than when I used to watch just the final itself. My completely baseless prediction is that this will qualify for the final and end up 18th-20th, but it will really depend on the quality of the vocals on the night. The televote tends to reward high energy, impactful rock songs, and the staging is good, but right now the live vocals and the lyrics are dragging it down.

After a week of having the opening cords stuck in my head, I put myself out of my misery and scoured the stores til i found the album. I had to limewire an album or two while music caught up, and it stopped being insanely difficult to get European music in the US. But I have yet to miss an Album since Dead Letters came out. I really was shocked, when I heard him sing. As you said, he doesn’t use the space in his mouth/throat (?) for resonance and it made the song fall flat for me.
If you listened to the studio version first, this is a huge difference, his voice has a lot more volume there (so I don’t think the “closed mouth effect” was on purpose).
I was so baffled, I wonder if he had some issues with his teeth on the night? I don’t know.

Exactly the same analysis about the vocals. His mouth is very closed. The body is the instrument so the mouth and all the resonators in the face have to be used to deliver the voice. The opening is crucial for correct breathing, shade, pronunciation and interpretation.
The performance is very good overall but to be great, this point can be improved. It may be disturbing for some people.

I've been fan of The Rasmus since I was 13 and Lauri has almost always had trouble with his voice on gigs, in some concerts I attended to it was really good and I was suprised, usually when they take a break for a looong time. About the lyrics, this song is catchy but the lyrics have no depth, usually all TR fans I talk to (and me too) love the band because of the lyrics, they are usually deep and emotional and have helped us cope with our lives as a therapy, this is NOT the case but I suppose they wanted something catchy that sells for the contest and that's it this time :D

Yes, Lauri’s voice is thin, shaky and pitchy and for me really hard to listen to.
The song is ok, and the tuned version of this on streaming services is much better, but for obvious reasons the ability to sing well is the most important thing in eurovision. Not the one I voted for in the Finnish televote.. You should check out Olivera - Thank God I’m an Atheist -it was my choice but didn’t get picked and I’m so bummed!

I listened to The Rawmus when I was a teeneger and some of their songs were great. I think that they could have created a much better song for eurovision.

I totally agree that the singing wasn't very good, specially at the beginning. It is also not helped by the weird rhymes on the lyrics, they often feel a bit mismatched and it stops you from getting into the song until you get to the Jezebel chorus which is kinda catchy

I listen The Rasmus since 2003, but I don't know why this song has not this kind of vibe or kick as the rasmus can give, like the song is good, but something is missing. For me songs like Silver Night or Paradise would do better work on this contest. But I will cheer on them too ^_^

He is not singing in his own language, obviously he is not naturally adjusted to speak or sing in English vowels and to match mouth shape to it.

About lyrics, I am not interested to know about some Jezebel, Madame Medusa or Lady Venom, who does this or that. There is no even beginning of a story.

I've listened this many times but it hasn't grown for me. It stays "flat" for me. I wonder if it even goes to finals. The thing with Rasmus is, they never evolved with their music, it's always been the same and easy to recognize. Finnish qualifiers, there were none which gave me the feeling: Yes, this is it!! They were all indifferent.

Of course the name The Rasmus sounds familiar, because you probably heard their hit songs like "In The Shadows," "Guilty," "F-F-Falling," etc in early 2000s! I was so excited to hear they were participating in UMK this year but when the song was released I was pretty underwhelmed by it. Now I love it, tho. It's a total grower. I do think his vocals, expecially before the first chorus, were a bit weak but he's been doing this for years now, I'm pretty sure he'll come up with ways to improve. I voted for them in UMK and hoping for the best now :)
About your confusion with what the song is about... In Lauri's words, "Jezebel is about a girl who takes what she wants, without asking. A free spirit. It is a homage, a tribute, to the strong women of today, who own their bodies, who are in charge of their sensuality, their sexuality, and who are determined to be an equal."
    Cheers!
