How to Clean a Honda/Acura IAC (Idle Air Control Valve)

  • It's not necessary to disconnect the coolant lights and connector. DO NOT flood the IAC with carb cleaner. These can easily be damaged so watch out. It's probably best to spray cleaner on a clean rag, then wipe the soot off of the Valve ports. Be sure to disconnect the battery before cleaning. Let the car get to operating temperature after cleaning, before driving. Recorded with Sony a5000

    My '97 Acura 1.6EL has been having a low idle for quite a while and only recently started having stalling and hesitation issues. I feared it was worse than just a simple clogged IAC. Though sometimes when I start it up and when it stalls, the oil light flickers quickly once or twice but never stays on.

    I'm pretty sure the IACV controls the idle once the engine is warm and the ECU controls if from cold and you said the other way round? I know this as on a cold start you can unplug the IACV and it's fine but a few minutes the IACV kicks in and the car will stall if it's not plugged in. I blocked off my coolant lines to the IM as a mod to reduce intake temps. I hate those crappy IM's, the Type R one is much better and easier to work on and looks a lot cleaner lol. Good video

    • @IntegraDIY
      @IntegraDIY  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks man! on obd1 cars they had the fitv (fast idle thermal valve) which worked exactly like a thermostat, it'll bypass the TB plate while cold, and once warm, it'll close allowing it to idle down. In obd2 cars they eliminated the fitv, and just used the iacv.. It worked like a thermostat valve and its programmed by the ecu. And yes without the iacv it will not run at all, since the primary function is to maintain idle, during loads from steering input/alternator/ and other accessories,,

  • @xart23x
    @xart23x Před 5 lety +3

    Might as well take it off and do a complete clean with NEW gasket. OEM gasket is very cheap, few bucks. Do this job once, all in and never have to deal with it again. MY experience has been, that my radiator was rusty, so it clogged the screen with rust particles. So, take coolant reservoir off, and tilt to look to the bottom and see if any dirt resides at the surface. If so, you may want to replace radiator and do a flush, then you go ahead and clean iacv. Coolant runs through both idle valves, so take that into account as to why idle may be surging or low as these valves may be clogged.

    • @IntegraDIY
      @IntegraDIY  Před 3 lety +1

      The one under the throttle body is called a fast idle thermo valve. 96+ obd2 Honda’s do not have them. They work similar as a thermostat, the valve moves using coolant temps to adjust idle. Hope this helps.
