    Lol as you say - yes we are all kidding ourselves on that we can critique the singing of these legends - even the decent singers among us can't! An absolute classic and I cannot believe they are no longer with us on this plane :( I loved them both, but George was only 23 here! What gems they both were. They just clicked so well and yes, it resulted in a classic. Thanks :)

    There are very few people who can sing with Aretha and not sound soulless, but George Michael actually does a pretty bang-up job!

    • @karenp4667
      @karenp4667 Před 3 lety +2

      George said in his book, he didn't want to overtake her. He wanted it to be all about her. He just let her do her thing. But yes, he did great. She was his idol.

      You would have known if you have listened to his songs before this song. He has always soulful. Good example are Careless Whisper and Everything She Wants.

  • @karenp4667
    @karenp4667 Před 3 lety +9

    Love your take on this. I loved this duet. I read in his book, Aretha's team approached him when he first left WHAM. He declined at first. He was about 26 and he said she was his idol and he was just too nervous. He finally came through. He didn't know how he would react not producing the track. He was so used to doing everything on his tracks. What a great move. This took Aretha back to number 1. It won the grammy for best duet in maybe 1987-88, I can't remember the exact year. George tells a funny story of how she brought a stack of ribs to eat and brought him some. He said he wasn't eating meat at this time. She sat on a stool and clean the ribs off and there was a basket half way across the room. She threw the bones in and never missed one time throwing the bone in the can. She wanted him to write and produce for him, but he felt he couldn't do her justice. I don't agree, I bet he would have come through for her. I love this one, but my fav will always be "As" with Mary J. Blige. I miss both of them. There are many great artists out there, but they are always looking for that great song, that great producer, the great music. Not George Michael, he did everything on his own, wrote, sang, produced and did most of the music for his tracks. He did it all and did it HIS way. I'm 71, I'll never see another George/Aretha in my lifetime.

    What I still love about this song is how George reins it in right until the end -- he doesn't really do any vocal acrobatics at all until the end, because he knows it's Aretha's show, that she should get to dominate most of it. It's a really respectful performance by a young 23-year-old man who worships the idol he's singing with.

    What can you say that hasn’t already been said. I want to sincerely thank you for your GM reactions. It hurts me to my soul to hear the younger generation say that don’t know anything about him and have not heard any of his songs. That is just heartbreaking to me. Two other GM duets I would suggest If I Told You That with Whitney Houston and As with Mary J. Blige. I can’t think of another artist that could hold there own as George did with the powerhouse women. Of course his duet with Elton John is also legendary. Both recordings of I Knew You Were Waiting For Me and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me were number 1 singles. Elton had recorded that song back in the 70’s and it placed pretty high on the charts back then. However you add George and it went straight to Number 1.

    Yay!! Another brilliant George Michael reaction. To put in perspective, this song was release post Wham! but pre-Faith album. He was only 24 years old when he recorded it and one of the very few songs that he didn’t produce.
    Definitely check our George Michael with Queen (LIVE) singing Somebody to Love at the Freddie Mercury Tribute. 🔥🔥🔥
    He has had so many incredible collaborations and I would also highly recommend his Elton John live duet of Don’t Let the Sun Come Down on Me.

      @@PancakeMarshmallowDude Oh yes! I remember now. I totally wished you watched the video because GM is so 😍 in it but I simply love your album reactions.
      When George performed Somebody to Love with Queen, he was obviously paying tribute to his close friend. What makes the performance even more amazing is that George’s true love, Anselmo, had just been diagnosed with AIDS (which is what Freddie had passed from) That night George sang with such passion for both - for Freddie AND to Anselmo. GM was not “out” yet so it was years later that he told the full story behind the performance. You really will be left speechless and there is nothing like a live GM performance in general but this one in particular is one of his greatest.
      After you watch that performance, I recommend you re-listen to Jesus to a Child (for your personal GM journey). It’s deeply personal about Anselmo and all of the emotions following his passing. You reacted to this song a while ago but knowing the background the song will hit different.
      For the channel, another beautiful GM ballad by George is A Different Corner. I strongly recommend the LIVE version on the BBC Parkinson show. The official video is great too but GM live is masterful. ❤️

    I love this duet and the video homage to what I think are Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in the background along with Sonny and Cher are also great duos. They mention in the song the mountain and valley, which are the subject of the former’s “ain’t no mountain high enough” (not to be confused with Diana Ross’s later similar-themed disco hit). The Marvin and Tammi song was written, I think, by famous singer/songwriter couple Ashford and Simpson, so if you can react some time to their “solid” or “found a cure” would be great. :-)
