Two months after release on Disney+, let's finally talk about Disney's Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie! Personally, I didn't really like it. Went into the movie not expecting much but still left disappointed. Plus, shocked by the overall praise it's gotten, let's take a timeout and discuss some stuff I found DID work and some that DIDN'T.

I still wonder if Sweet Pete's origin is a jab at Bobby Driscoll, the original Peter Pan actor who was dropped without warning when he hit puberty. He could find work after that and eventually became homeless.. He died a sad and lonely death at a young age after that.

One of the reasons I'm not watching the film is that I thought the villain backstory for Peter Pan was tasteless and heartless. I know Disney likes to make jokes about itself now but to tell the story of Peter Pan losing his job when he hit puberty and being moved to a life a crime is in poor taste. This is a tad close too the tragic story of child actor Bobby Driscoll who voiced and modeled for the Peter Pan cartoon. Upon turning 16 Bobby was also abandoned by the studio. He couldn't find work as an adult actor as he was labeled as a Disney child star. He eventually turned to drugs and at 31 was found dead, lying in a deserted tenement building. His body unclaimed for over a year until his mother tried to find him. It might be argued that not everyone knows the tragic story of the Peter Pan actor Bobby Driscoll but if this is true that makes the plot an in-joke, and a cruel one at that. Even Illumination's Despicable Me 3 was able to tell a story of a jobless child actor without connections to an actual tragic event.

I think it should have been a better and funnier twist that he was originally a human that turned themselves into a cartoon. When he started aging he couldnât afford a surgery to turn himself back into a human (since that would be so much more expensive than turning into a cartoon). So he started a crime syndicate to raise enough money. It would have been a better back story than the offensive one they came up with. đ€·đ»ââïž
Except when they do and then suddenly donât. The titular two meet in primary school as kids, grow up to start the show and then they just donât age for the next 30 years.
I think the expectations of modern films have dropped so low that an average one is now considered good. 20 years ago, this Chip & Dale reboot would have been considered a terrible film in the eyes of critics, but since it isn't total rubbish, it is in many eyes a good one.

Also it's kinda silly how the movie pretends that Chip and Dale haven't had careers stretching back decades before the Rescue Rangers cartoon. They're ten years older than Peter Pan is.
Add to that the fact that the kid who voiced and modeled for Peter Pan in the animated movie was fired once he started puberty, couldnât get jobs with other companies because he was a âDisney kidâ and then died of a drug overdose in his 30s. Disney is making fun of a guy whose life they ruined.
Whatâs more, why does he abduct famous toons to star in his bootleg movies if heâs going to morph them beyond recognition anyway? Why doesnât he just abduct or even hire non-famous toons to star in them?

Because no one watched this movie to even discuss it (and no, putting it on in the background so you can browse your phone does not count as watching the movie), but if they did the movie itself makes it non-canon because Gadget and Zipper in the movie are not the actual characters, but the "actors" that play those characters. There's nothing to discuss other than the weirdness.

20 years ago Chip and Dale would have been seen on the level of mockery the first Space Jam and Back in Action (unfairly) got but since movie expectations have dropped significantly, frighteningly low since then this is considered good.
Besides all the things brought up in this film, the most baffling decision is to reduce Gadgetâs presence to a glorified cameo. Letâs be honest, she was a big reason we were watching that show in the first place.
She and Zippers are a couple now, deal with it.

I think the most confusing thing about all this is that Chip is supposed to have been the popular one in the original show? Like, was it just me being obsessed with Dale and finding Chip kinda dull (when I was a kid at least). Like, I feel like straight comic their characters are already more popular than the "leader" type.
My thing is that you can immediately tell that the â2Dâ characters are just 3D models with a filter. Itâs trying to do a roger rabbit, but that was actual 2d animation over live action and it still holds up to this day. Thisâll age badly. Itâs already aged badly.

It's hard to find someone online who actually had an opposing opinion and perspective on the film that differs from everyone else. Honestly, I think Disney had strings pulled to get undeserved praise for years now. But aside from my conspiracies, it is shocking to see people actually say good things about this movie when it's just a hallow, mean spirited film with endless cameos and meme references. It makes me happy to know that some people like you can actually speak honestly about what this film really is and some of the issues this movie has. Hopefully within time more and more people will open their eyes and see that the movie was never as good as they claimed it to be when it first came out. We deserve better written movies with a real story and message behind the story that's worth while.

Meta jokes are always a hit or miss for me, the uncanny valley hit me p hard tho đ I do wish they went all out with the 2d animation instead of "2.5d animation" or however you want to call it
None of the characters act like the Rescue Rangers characters, which begs the question of why this was even a Rescue Rangers movie to begin with.
Nostalgia bait. Same reason theyre all the craze over sequels and remakes. They have no confidence in new ips because even the recognized ips get doodoo fart returns because they keep screwing it up and shareholders dont like a studio already "down on its luck" taking a risk with a project noone has any prior attachment to.
I'm also shocked that Disney is insulting a child actor who was left penniless by them and died. Its a shame because its the worst aspect of this film. I haven't seen this film and from this, I dont want to.

Peter Pan is probably the only Disney child/teen character I was never ever curious about imagining as an adult, and now thanks to this movie, that lack of want has only tripled. Thanks chip and dale movie, I will never get to un-picture Peter with post-pubescent stubble and beer gut again.

I loved the movie- but I was also a HUGE Rescue Rangers fan as a kid!
I can see how younguns would miss most of the jokes based on the characterâs personalities and the old show plots.
And back in the 90âs there were TONS of bootleg fake versions of EVERY cartoon that looked off in weird ways. They are hard to find now, but thatâs what a lot of the joke was for the main plot. Pretty much most of the jokes are based on things we would remember from the 90âs- early 00âs, and anyone born after â95 probably had little chance of getting them as the majority were visual (easy example- the villain roaring at the end and the streamer floats down - just like in the first Jurassic Park).
So, yeah. Us old folks and our nostalgia is why it has a great rating. đ€·ââïž đ

I think you're underestimating how long cultural things can stay with us. I was born in 2000 but I also grew up with Rescue Rangers and weird fake versions of animated movies. One of the most popular youtubers in my country while I was in middle school had reviewing those fake animations as his thing!

Im sorry but I had bindged the show on disney plus with my sister after she was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED by this film. As an aspiring storyboard artist and storyteller, she went off on how horrendous this film was. From comedy, to meta humor, to plot. I ended up catching her watching the original series this movie was based on and imma be real here, there is literally non of the OG series in this movie besides the characters. These characters are beyond out of character.
Major rescue rangers fan myself, albeit one that discovered it long after its original run. Personally, I find the movie to be an abomination. As a movie, I found it to just be bad. As a fan, it was insulting and so disconnected from the characters as they were in the show that I literally couldnât find anything I really liked about it. It did make me hunt down a blu ray copy of the original series, so I guess thatâs one good thing I can say about the movie.
Yeah. I could only watch fifteen minutes before turning it off, the rest Iâve seen by proxy through reviewers. There wasnât a single bit of appeal to be had.
The fact they tried to pass off mediocre cel shading as hand drawn animation, the way it didnât follow outline of the show it shares a title with, they didnât bring back the original voice cast except as glorified cameos (even though theyâre all alive and still working), the tasteless reference to Bobby Driscoll, all the overused meta humour. If there was an award for undue praise and unearned acclaim, this movie would win without trying (which was already the case).

What if I animated some fan art Bowsette does that mean that she could just show up? What about Vtubers? Would their animated skin become sentient? Am I the only one who thought the cinematography was quite bad ? Like, of course the 2D CGI is bad but the overall look of the film is awful. The lightning never looks right, none of the shots are good they all look bad and I can't seem to explain why. It seems like every shit is overcrowded and badly coloured. Terrible.
I think the reason so many people liked this movie is just because of the novelty of it... Like, there's a LOT of references and cameos in this movie, and they have live action, 3D animation, AND bits of 2D animation all in the same movie. Combine that with the powerful drug known as "nostalgia" and no wonder it did well.

I never watched the Chip and Dale show, but my grandparents had the VHS tape of little mini adventures they did, but I can't remember what it was called. They duked out with Donald Duck on a apple farm in one part, and the last part had a cowboy guns blazin' story, the "Lone Chipmunks"
For me its one of those movies that I know is bad. But is just toâŠcomforting I guess? Donât really know how to describe but I watch it with the knowledge that it isnât a good film

I honestly kinda thought that the fact they cast random famous people as voice actors kinda goes with the whole theme of the movie of criticising modern reboots. That's how I interpreted it but I might just be making excuses for bad casting/voice acting.
When I first watched it I loved it now looking back at it yea it's bad there is like not a solid story and jokes are terrible
I didn't mind the movie, enjoyed all the Transformers references in the movie but it honestly could have been better with the references.
Overall not a bad movie but smth I would put in the background for just noise, the movie was just bland.
I thought the cg and 2d thing with Chip and Dale was to tell which was which
If that's the case then that's sad nobody can tell them apart
i watched chip n dale rescue rangers once, and i thought it was a pretty decent movie. it has some goods and it has some of its bads, but in my opinion i think there is more bad than good in this movie. I really appreciate the people who worked hard to make this movie, but still i couldn't hide the fact that it was just plain and nothing new, although the mix of live-action, 3d, and 2d in this movie is quite interesting.
