    Thanks for educating us. Just subscribed for more content. Like most, I have questions but will start off easy on you.... I have an 800 acre MLDP property that I help manage. This past year, we bush hogged some of the hunting fields, drug them with land rakes to remove all of the cut weeds and grass (no chemicals used), disc harrowed the fields, drug them to break up the big stuff, harrowed again and then planted . Food plotted (fall/winter blends) portions of them and perennial rye on the remainder. We came back early spring and planted coastal for summer cover. Fields turned out beautiful and have had activity on them ever since but, that was a lot of work and it sounds like you have a process that is a little less labor intensive.
    So, I just purchased 73 acres for myself and am currently preparing the property but do not want to follow the same process as above. I would like to know, what are you using to kill off the weeds/grasses that you are able to go back and immediately put down fertilizer and seed that does not hamper the germination process and kill off the new seed?
    Location of both properties is East Texas. Recommendation for blends would be great as well for the upcoming fall planting season, I think I can get it done in time.
    Thanks for putting out the videos. Much to be learned.

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 9 dny

      Hey Michael- thanks for reaching out and for subscribing, I appreciate it! For your question, I used a full rate of glyphosate to kill the grasses and weeds just before broadcasting the seed. Glyphosate is a contact killer so it's only going to kill stuff that is green and actively growing, it doesn't have any residual effect on the soil, which is why I was able to seed right away. As for blends, being in TX, I would recommend something like the Rut Greens Warm Climate blend. Hope that helps, my email is jaredjamesmills@gmail.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 17 dny

      Hey Mark- I assume you're talking about after the plot has grown? If so, I typically will spray with clethodim. It takes a little while for them to die off, but it doesn't harm the other species in the food plot. Thanks for the support!

  • @travissmith-wz5nc
    @travissmith-wz5nc Před 19 dny +1

    Would you broadcast 50 lbs medium red clover across 7 to 8 acres in fall. I am in mostly a wooded area in north east michigan. Seems like everything is pounded starting early august. I was thinking off broadcasting mostly cereals with red clover this fall. I do have some rr soybeans that are doing well but i added buckwheat and millet at planting and just sprayed them being the beans big enough to handle the browse now. Winke and You have a great channels.

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 18 dny

      Hey Travis- thanks for watching. With the clover, you're not as likely to end up with much food for the fall when doing a fall planting like that. It will come back strong in the spring though, so it just depends on your goals. The cereal grains will be good, and I'd consider adding some brassicas to that to increase the amount of forage. Let me know if you have any other questions, good luck!

  • @Brnoutdoors
    @Brnoutdoors Před 19 dny

    Hey Jared, always love the content. I would like to take a shot at making a food plot for this fall. You made the spring plot look so easy, and I've always thought you needs tons of equipment to do it. Can your fall plots be put in just as easy and have some success? Interested on how I would go about doing that. Would love to try some of your seeds.

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 18 dny

    Do you feel the deer you have early summer stick around till the fall and through the hunting season?

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 18 dny +1

      Hey Tyson- it varies for me. I have some that do, and some that don't. Most of the properties I have access to don't have many of the remote summer spots like I mentioned in the video, but I will say keeping the clover/chicory in there year round has resulted in holding more deer. The deer that don't stick around for the summer, typically come back around the September time frame and are relatively consistent throughout the hunting season.

  • @sambricker4731
    @sambricker4731 Před 17 dny

    I’d like to try and get a fall plot going . Have never done a plot before. Maybe just a couple small 1/4 acre plots to try it out for the first time. So July 20-3aug 20 before a rain for planting. But before the planting what do I need to do the prep the spot I want to put the plots in? Should I mow then spray or visa versa? Spray then burn with fire once dies? The two spots I have in mind are currently fescue and canary grass mainly with various weeds

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 17 dny +1

      Hey Sam, awesome to hear. Yes, the more your spot is prepared, the better your results will be. Assuming it is pretty tall with weeds, if possible, I would mow it, then spray about a week or so later after things start actively growing again. From there, you have some options. You could seed right into that as long as it looks like the small seeds will make it to the dirt and have good seed-to-soil contact. Or, you could burn off the dead thatch once it's completely dead so that all your soil is exposed, then broadcast the seed. Or, if you plant to disc or till, the ideal scenario is to work the ground, let whatever weeds/grass re-germinate, then spray them again in 10 days or so before broadcasting seed. That will give you the best chance of not having much weed competition in your plot. Hope that helps, I don't want it to be overwhelming for your first go at it. Feel free to reach out if I can help further. My email is jaredjamesmills@gmail.com.

    Jared, in March this year I frost seeded some clover in a power line right of way and when I mowed it awhile few weeks ago the clover just is good enough to keep but it isn’t great. What you you recommend seeding into right before a rain this fall to make it a little better? Then next spring I would likely frost seed it again to try to make the clover better. Also in your video I noticed you were wearing a half face mask with cartridge filters on it while you were spraying. Is that something you always do or was it because of a certain chemical you were using? Thanks DJ

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 18 dny

      Hey DJ- With the mask, I wasn't spraying any different chemical, I'm just trying to be better about protection when it comes to that stuff, especially when backpack spraying out in the open. For your plot, you have a couple options (without knowing exactly what it looks like). If you want some immediate food for this fall, you could broadcast a combination of brassicas and cereal grains prior to a rain, which would give you food and you'd still be able to go frost seed more clover like you mentioned. Or, you could do a combination of cereal grains and clover, with the idea being you might have enough clover established going into next spring without having to worry about frost seeding. For seeding rate, I would just use your best judgement based on how much good clover you already have and how many bare spots you have to fill in. Hope that helps.

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  Před 20 dny +2

      I haven't seen them spook from it. They will come to investigate it when it's new, about like they do anything, but they get used to it quick and don't spook. I just looked and saw there were quite a few deer feeding around this one I put out yesterday within hours of me putting it up. A couple does came and sniffed it, but then just fed around.
