Jake Runyan and Chase Cominsky were Caught stuffing over 8lbs of lead weights into their fish during the weigh in at the Lake Erie Walleye Trail Championship. They had been suspected of cheating of sometime now and finally got caught.

I'm not even a fishermen and even I'm pissed about these bastards cheating the other competitors. How low of a human being can you be to cheat at fishing which is dam near sacred to mankind. Fishing is literally biblical.

I went on a sand shark fishing boat tour 20 years ago. They had a pool of money for the longest shark, not the one with the most weight. They caught several people trying to break the spines and stretch the sharks out. I ended up winning the pool by default, because I was the only one who didnt try to "strech" the shark. $500 for a 13 year old kid.

I started hunting in NJ when I was 12, 1970. Myself and my 4 younger brothers were taught, if you kill it you eat it. This was a time when many others did not feel the same. By the late 70's in my area respect and good hunting ethics had become the norm. Same with fishing either inland, off shore or deep. I don't know what's happening now but the response to this incident is perfect. They were first ostracized by their former peers. Then they found out there are serious legal ramifications and to see the authorities ramming that message home will prevent any fool from doing this again. The financial loss is a lifetime of work. They will age and die poor, lonely and stupid. No sympathy at all.
Oh so no one will ever commit murder again then I take it. After all a murder charge carries 'serious legal ramifications". Get over yourself. People were cheating before and they will continue to cheat into the future, consequences don't hold a candle to the potential gains.

Same thing happened in Pembroke, Ontario. Father and son team caught the fish several days before the tournament. Put the fish in traps in the Ottawa River and then brought them for the weigh in. MNR was in the river during the tourny and observed them taking the fish out of the traps. They have been banned from any fishing tournaments in Ontario.
Used to be a tournament in the spring in Delaware Ontario on the Thames river. Some local poachers would illegally dip net and take a couple huge sows full of eggs to it and win every year. Boats, trolling motors, money. They finally just stopped having the tournament
that is the most common way of cheating in those tourneys

When I was 12 years old in 1976 I caught a 10.50lb. Walleye trolling with a spoon at Lake of the Ozarks with my dad. It's still the biggest fish I ever caught. I know it has nothing to do with this but fishing with dad was fun times.
But it is - we've "all" been there, had those beginners luck/bad luck experiences - that's why, we are here, and connect with each other, no matter where we meet.. Nothing takes as long time as "just going in for a coke", and seeing some stranger with fishing gear stuff with him - if you ask "all wives of anglers in the world". ..

Great report. Thanks. I do have a question about Walleye Tournaments for anyone who can answer. I know Bass Tournaments keep their fish alive and released after weigh-in but I noticed the Walleyes are not or at least in this case -all dead. Is this normal for a Walleye tournament? If so, are these fish then kept by the fisherman after weigh-in?
Alot of walleye tournaments are not based on keeping the fish alive as bass tournaments.
Almost all of these fish are donated to food banks...
These two cheaters have a history of not donating..rather keeping their catch post weigh in.

Most released tournament fish die, regardless of species.

Go explore a smaller lake a day or two after a tournament and see all the carnage they cause... something the tournament guys don't want known.

Start watching for your best teams/anglers that tend to stay on the leader boards. If all of the sudden, after all of this, they are now no longer regularly on the leader boards, keep a VERY close eye on them!

I did one fishing tournament when I was 4 years old in 1990 and have not fished in 20 years yet this pops up in my feed and I'm captivated. Who the hell cheats in fishing. The audacity of the guys.

Years ago I witnessed some fishermen catching a lot of undersized redfish. We learned at the landing that they were stopped a few miles up the road with 164 undersize redfish (limit was 5 legal sized) and that the wildlife agents seized their boat, vehicle and all their fishing equipment. They lost whatever was involved in committing the crime.

To shove 2oz-8oz lead weights wrapped up in a walleye fillet to make a 4# walleye look like an 8# walleye is unbelievable--- One of the charges should be abusing wildlife-- They probably got away with it a couple times, and then went for the gusto!!!

ODNR can seize any property used to poach which when they filleted fish to stuff in other fish they poached those. So under that rule they can seize every piece of property used to catch, transport (boat) and transportation of the boat.

Watched a weigh in for a big tournament happening on my home lake. The usual was being weighed in but then a team weighed in an 8lb large mouth, which is unheard of from this lake. Everyone figured he was cheating. A month later he was caught with one in his live well while launching for another tournament. Had some small private lakes he was using to cheat.
It’s blown up so much I had no idea about these dudes this sport the sponsors anything at all now I’m a professional walleye spectator in a day 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This had been going on for some time, for several tournaments. How did the director not see that a 25" (5lb) walleye weighing more than it should (7 lbs.)before? Was he on the take?

The monetary value of the prize they attempted to steal was 30 Grand. That's felonies and it was done with intent. Oh they can make that stick. and these two have been suspected of it before in prior events, but they cannot stick prior events.
The boat was seized because it was used in commission of a crime, felony crime at that.
In a case like this there will probably be a lot of investigation going on before actual charges are filed. Multiple things they can search and subpoena in regards to theft and conspiracy

I think it would be hard to prove other incidents of cheating w/o the evidence. In this recent case it open/shut. They could get some pretty serious charges from just this one incident if prosecuted fully. Hopefully whoever sponsored or sanctioned the tournament have some language in the competitors agreement that would allow for other punishment. They should should also be barred permanently from entering future tournaments.
Decades ago, when they caught cheaters at the Soap Box Derby, they had evidence that suggested that it had been done in the past. But the surrendered cars (the winners are kept by the Derby) were ... missing.

the stench of this reached all the way down here in virginia. i quit fishing tournament for this reason. i used to fish lake erie for walleye, this is sad.
Saw an interview with the Tournament Director. Apparently it was suspicious due to weights and size of fish. The dude watches hundreds of fish being weighed and these dudes added 8lbs to their bag. He inspected the fish after suspicion and that's when he found the weights and fillets.
Competitive fisherman are a whole lot more chill than any other group I can think of... because those two boys shouldn't have walked away from that tourney with their skin intact.

I remember back in the late 70's they had a salmon tournament in Manistee Michigan. Someone had caught a huge salmon and produced the fish during the tournament, however it was a fish they caught months beforehand and froze the fish to use at the tournament. Clean fraud.
How you prove a fish has been frozen? Is there some way to tell? I got the feeling these people had probably done that too. I don’t know much about professional fishing, but it seems to me that people who win should have their fish cut open (I guess, unless the fish are returned to the waterway).

First, who is putting the tournament on? If it's a private tournament, it's not a criminal matter it's a civil matter. Cheating in and of itself is not illegal. Second, the burden of proof required to seize any property is massive, and if not properly met, the county that took the boat will have a massive lawsuit on their hands.

Edit, if you get caught breaking fishin' laws in Florida the game warden can take your boat, trailer, rods, and even the tow vehicle. I saw a guy lose a Cadillac for having illegal snook in his trunk. So it could be similar up there in PA and OH.
