I've been watching tennis for more than 10 years now, but still, when I see casual displays of technical brilliance like the volleys that Nick was hitting starting at 11:27, I am still in awe. With each volley, even when the shot is coming at him hard, he looks like he has all the time in the world and is casually accompanying the ball with his wrist and hitting wherever he wants (you can hear how he calls out the direction of its upcoming shot sometime before he hits the volley). I hope one day I also look like that when hitting volleys.. 😅

Great video that demonstrated the type of training and drills used condition players. Used drills
Ike this to develop my high school tennis players and USTA Junior tennis players. You got to do the drills to build the skills. If you can’t get to the ball you can’t hit it. Being fit and able to run every shot down you let your opponent know they are in for tough day 🎾🎾 and your not going away. You have to be a lean mean tennis machine 🎾🎾

yeah, the level of exhaustion after just a few minutes of these drills is unbelievable. I do drills like that too, and I'm a recreational player who's never known the conditioning of a pro so I can only imagine the intensity they have to endure. Especially those drills at the net (terrific effort); but it actually gets easier the longer your session, well, unless you lose your legs too, because as long as it's just lungs that fail you, it's ok, their capacity will increase during the session, or this is what I experience at least; but legs, nope, if they're gone, they're gone for good, and without your legs there's really no point. The last drill shows it perfectly: Emma can't really go down low enough to those low balls and she almost stops moving at one point, her legs are giving up. oh, hurts just thinking about it ;-) Bravo! it was a great training session:-)

This is a great insight into how to really progress at tennis - dozens of difficult drills with a coach who feeds excellently and motivates well. Regarding the constantly changing colours in the video, probably the white-balance is set to Auto, which might be better to changed to Sunlight as this is Florida.

Good points comparing tennis' intensity with running. I thought because I run regularly with a pretty good pace, I wont get my tank emptied that fast when playing, but I was so wrong. And on the other hand, after many high intensity tennis training with my coach, my time in running is keep on going better and better and I don't feel as tired like before. That short and explosive movement with little rest in between in tennis works like an intervals training for runners. Tennis makes my run better, but running doesn't make my tennis better.

In my early 40's, I won 3 tournaments, first one at 3.5 and then at 4.0. I don't think it was coincidence that I was distance running 4 times/week. During that period I rarely faced a player who could wear me out.

Hello Nick, nice video. I understand from your videos that you don’t recommend using the wrist on shots (especially the forehand) because of the risk of injury. I see Patrick Mouratoglou talk about using the wrist a lot on the forehand and serve to create rackethead speed in his videos. Is this just a difference in philosophy? I’d love to get your thoughts on this.
