There's a trick I did too achieve high scores.
But I'm not sure it's because how the game was balanced or something but when the ball gets kicked out by the yagoff tunnel.
You can trap the ball with the right flipper and with the momentum of the ball it can go up and down the in Lane back to the flipper.
Where you can shoot it back into the yagoff tunnel and repeat the process over and over rack up all the kills.

LOVE that game! The place I worked at in the 80's got two of those things, both Prototypes. WMS had the 2 red flashers behind those upper stand up targets populated on the proto's and the early tuns. Made for a great light show but when the target got bent back to hard by the ball it would short the target to solenoid b+ and do ALL KINDS of damage to the switch matrix. Ironic you're covering SIP resistors today.
I'm repairing a Galaga I picked up recently.
When powered up it coins up, starts, ship goes to right side of screen and doesn't respond to inputs.
Narrowed it down to a couple failed SIP resistors and some mystery corrosion in the input area of the board.
Funny thing is there's NO capacitors anywhere near this damaged area yet the schmoo stain is the classic leaked capacitor damage.
Waiting for digikey to get my parts here (always order a few extras) and couldn't think of Great plains electronics at the time.
Glad you posted this video, GPE is in my bookmarks now! Believe it or not they're cheaper than digikey!

Great Plains Electronics is great... if there is cap damage it's very possible it may have leaked off the monitor above it, it'd be interesting to see if the board is directly under the monitor (I can't remember which side the board is on and the monitor board is on) Something similar happens in bally pins when the battery alkaline literally drips onto the board below it...

Joe, (I KNOW THATS NOT YOUR NAME!) yes the monitor board is in fact directly above the area in question. I did remove the monitor early in the repair process and the board looked fine so I ruled that out as a source but now that I think about it the monitor worked good (during my brief test) so I ASSumed that couldn't be it.
But, the monitor has Tron burn in so who's to say the board didn't spew out electrolyte previously and get repaired after damaging the game PCB!

On a totally unrelated (to this video) note, It looks like I need a Namco 51xx IC from a Galaga board. From what I understand the 51xx can come from Galaga, Dig dug, pole position, Bosconian or Xevious.
By chance would you be willing to sell one if you have one?
Apparently they're almost unobtanium unless you buy a whole board.....
      Thanks!

That's the first time I'd heard of a combination resistor and capacitor pack. I bet those were special orders from the factory, which is why you'll never find a replacement.
Also, bodge wires, as I've seen them pointed out, were wires added at the factory to make last-minute fixes to the PCB. Sometimes they are accompanied with cut traces. I only call your wire "a repair".

JOE'S CLASSIC, What small capacitors by the Resistor packs you mentioned that the schematics doesn't install the small capacitors any reasons why? because they are soldered in the pcb those little yellow capacitors. The Whole problem with the repair was that the wrong resistor pack VALUES were wrong?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  Před 3 lety

It looks like they were going to add extra capacitors in the board so that you wouldn't need the resistor and capacitor combination piece... but on some boards they're there and some they aren't. The whole problem was yes those resistor pack values were wrong and also there were 4 places where the trace on the board was broken so I had to put the jumper wires.

The bonus multiplier isnt registering by the looks of it. You went round the top loop (u-turn) at least twice while bonus-x was lit and it didnt register (red arrows pointing towards Yagov kicker)

When the games got a little more advanced in the mid 80's, they started adding general illumination relays that were controlled by the main board, so they could turn all the general illumination lights off for certain modes, so the game has turned all the GI lights off so that all you can see is the police light up top, and the insert lights on the playfield as a special effect. If they left the GI lights turned on it wouldn't look quite as dramatic, it's just part of the light show :)

all bodge wires are jumpers. not all jumpers are bodges. Basically something has that has to be added to a design after the PCB is made is a bodge wire. If it's part of the design and not fixing a problem found late in production, then it's a jumper.
