I add a thin layer of foam (1 cm) over the whole thing before upholstery. It hides misery and adds some thickness that the compression of the leatherette causes to the foam.

Check out RFID ignition, they were kinda pricey when I was looking at em two years ago. But super easy and frees up lots of space .Fob in your pocket turns it on and off if in 6 ft range.
