      Hi Carrie & Brian! Thank You so much for sharing your amazing info! I just wanted to let you know, a little while ago I signed up for your "AirBnB Checklist" and it was delivered immediately. Then I signed up for your "Ultimate Carry-on Packing List" and it never arrived. I tried several more times, and also checked spam, but it never arrived.
      So... Working in tech for the last 30 years I knew to try using a different email address. That worked and the packing list was delivered immediately.
      I wanted to let you know that if a person signs up for one of your lists, and it's the first time they've done that they'll receive the download email, but if they use the same email address to signup for another list, Flodesk will NOT deliver the download email.

    We are listening to you guys as well as like John and Bev, decided to go with a travel backpack and a small day pack as personal item. We did start down sizing when we put the house up for sale and going to do the last step in the coming couple of weeks as we close on our house, and joining this life style. Thank you guys for your help and inspiration!

    When I worked as a chef, I wore a uniform so I got used to wearing the same outfit every day. Now I wear the same style of pants and shoes, and just switch up tops I can buy anywhere. I sold my home and nearly everything else before traveling full-time. I put some things in storage but it got too expensive after a year. Now I rent a studio apartment as a home base to keep a physical street address in the US and run my home-based business in-between trips.

    I sold everything 7+ years ago. It was so freeing and liberating. I full time in an RV and almost everything I own is with me. I have a 5x5 storage unit that I keep some things that I did not want to get rid of. I am good with that now. It was tough in the beginning. Selling "stuff" yielded thousands of dollars and so glad I did it. It took me 18 months to sell everything. I had sooooooo much stuff!

    • @BrianandCarrie

      It's quite a process for sure, but feels so good when it's done. The RV is a nice way to keep some of your things with you as well. Cheers!!

    Here is a home nightmare story. My sister and her husband left their multimillion dollar home up in the NW a year ago, they were in Arizona.
    Their heating system broke down during the freeze of December 2022, and a water pipe under an upstairs bathroom sink had a solder connection that broke with the freeze. The entire upstairs and downstairs was flooded and a year later they are still waiting for the insurance to pay for the rebuild. (The drying out and remediation cost $150K last year). So you are right, keeping a home when you want to travel has high risks. You. might even come back to a squatter who refuses to leave! I think it would be nice to own an apartment somewhere in Europe with low maintenance that can be "lock and leave".

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před 4 měsíci +1

      That would be our biggest worry! The idea behind what we are doing is being as care free as possible. We have friends that have had rentals in the past and it doesn't always end well. 🙄

    • @glorgau
      @glorgau Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah, I'm thinking of having one small one in europe - france or italy - and one in SE asia, thailand or philippines. It could be done for less than the cost of keeping a house in the US. As long as I can get an espresso in the morning it's all good. I could let friends or family stay in either one while spending time at the other.

    • @ParisianThinker
      @ParisianThinker Před měsícem

      If you do that, you must realise the same things can happen in Europe too.

    Such a helpful video for any type of travellers. We are on the last leg of our 3-month adventure and we used so many of your suggestions. Those small packable grocery bags are a lifesaver. I bought a bunch of them as souvenirs so my friends have them too! We only had a small carry on suitcase, and a backpack as our personal item and it was all we needed too. We won’t ever go back to hauling a large suitcase. We actually used big Ziploc bags as packing cubes. We pushed out all the air and got them to squish down really well. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they worked for us. Smart wool clothing holds up so well, doesn’t smell and dries quickly for anyone looking for good quality travel wear. Great job Carrie and Brian! Enjoy your next adventures.

    Sage advice, guys. My big news is we are buiyng a house in Spain! It is furnished, so now we have to declutter our own stuff AND the stuff that comes with the house 😅 I've long since been OK with "less is more," but I still have things to move on from. I have more guitars than I actually play, (there are two I'll keep, the rest get sold). We aren't full time travelers, more like, "frequent travelers from a home-base." Later this year, our new home-base will be Torremolinos.

    We are increasing our traveling and reducing our belongings as well. But our last downsizing but us in a very low cost to own home, so we won't be selling it. We can close it up and go with a small amount of effort. The idea of being more spontaneous with our traveling is our goal.

    I have two collapsible water bottles that lay flat and I fill them at a water fountain or sink once I get past security. They have a carabiner to clip onto a bag or belt.
    I like to use a power bank that I plug into the wall and then I charge all my devices from that. I have a smaller one that unfolds with a solar panel that can recharge itself and can charge all the things if you are away from an outlet. It just needs about 4 hours of sun to charge itself.
    My new thing is collapsible silicone cups, bowls and a tea kettle. The tea kettle works with 110, or 220 power. I’m not sure how dedicated I will be to carry the bowl and kettle, but the cup I will keep. It’s very stable and has a lid

    Great tips!
    If laptop is too heavy and you need the Windows or Mac OS, consider a Mini PC and a portable 13" monitor. Save weight and space. Ounces = Pounds
    I can live without a laptop. DeX is a great option with Miracast to TV or an HDMI cable. Microsoft Foldable Keyboard and a BT mouse ...instant office🤔
    Sawyer makes a great filter with adapters. Phillips UV and Grayl can get heavy.
    Electrolyte drops go in my TSA liquids bag. Really helps combat jet lag, long haul dehydration.
    Consider third party silicone cord for your airpods on the plane or sleep. Airfly adapter is great!
    Best advice ever: figue out what works for you ❤

    We rented our family home and are now travelling full time. The rent we received is our passive income. We also have dividends stocks. Can’t put all your eggs in one basket so to speak. There has been times when we have been dealing with house issues through the property manager. It would have been easier if we were there but it is part of juggling our investments and travelling. Selling a house is a big call so don’t rush it. Getting back in the property market, specially in the area we live, would be impossible for us.

    If I were to ever become a minimalist, I would shock myself. LOL! Great that you guys can do it. Friends who travel up to half a year at a time, still have their residences to come back to when they eventually come home. Most retired in their mid-50s and are in their 60s now.
    For me, it's been decades of traveling back and forth overseas, but then coming home to everything still set up. Up until early retirement, also in my mid-50s, I would come home to see parents, siblings, other family members, friends, take care of things, make money, and then eventually leave again. And after early retirement, it has basically been the same up to and into the beginning of the 2020 shutdowns. Thank goodness, I got home about a month before the shutdowns.
    As for packing, I'm back and forth on that one. I remember on the first solo trip to S.E. Asia in the late 90s, I left with only a tiny carry-on bag and a handbag. My mom drove me to LAX and couldn't believe that that was all that I had. But, I usually travel with wheeled luggage which works fine for me. I'm female, traveling solo, and don't want to constantly lug bags. I need to roll stuff and sometimes wheeled carry-on suitcases can end up having to be checked anyhow as some airlines are stricter than others. So, if something is going to end up having to be checked, then it might as well be a large, wheeled suitcase. Packing is so individual.
    As for packing cubes, I personally love them. Have used them for decades. When I get to my destination, I thrown them into a dresser drawer and don't unpack them. Then, when it's time to repack and move on, I just throw them all back into my original piece of luggage and off to the next destination.
    Greetings from Los Angeles

    I am actually at the end of my decluttering process now and I completely agree that doing it over time is so much better. Things always take a little longer than expected, and of course it is hard mentally to get rid of some things! I also agree that having a water filter bottle is essential; I carry a Katadyn BeFree 1L bottle everywhere, and it is good for hiking and squishes down so that it does not take up too much room. It is a little hard to drink out of though, like you mentioned that some of them were. Thanks for the tips!

    I embrace getting rid of the miscellaneous stuff in my large home. Going to sell the house. However, will likely store pricey furniture that would work in a smaller future home, and I don’t envision traveling for more than a year or two before deciding where to live next-U.S. or otherwise. Good video and good points all around. A lot of helpful info. I have recently gone all solids so no liquids through TSA. Toothpaste tabs, solid deodorant and soap that also works for shaving cream and a Buffpuf for scrub. Also all my electronics are now USB C so 2 cables covers everything from laptop, ear buds, noise canceling ear muffs. cell phone and flashlights etc.. Google fi for phone carrier so no need for sim cards as it works everywhere. Like Brian I also am not a fan of packing cubes. I do recommend Duluth Armachillo T shirts since they are anti microbial, thin and light and dry super quickly and last a long time. I have several that are over 4 years old from daily use.

    We sold everything and moved to Portugal. I'm a sentimental person so this was a difficult thing for me. I put everything that my children didn't want...( Surprise! No one wanted my ceramic cat collection!) Into a spare bedroom and I'd visit the room occasionally. So many things I'd forgotten I'd put in there! So did I really need them? All photos were copied to SD cards, my daughter has the hard copies. Left the states with 15 pieces of luggage. (Sailed over so luggage was no issue) We are attached to the memories, not "things" I live in a van full time now, traveling and living my simple life. I enjoy buying plants or things I need for comfort if I'm parking for a month or so and I have no qualms about giving these items to the friends I've made when we hit the road again.

    I got rid of all my stuff when I moved to China in 2011. Then again when I moved to Thailand in 2018. Then when I bought a house in the US in 2022 I started accumulating some stuff again just to maintain the home even though I only plan to live there half the year 😮. PS: I left my golf clubs and pineapple shirt in Thailand 😂

    I had a 3/2 house and sold and moved 585 miles away to a 2/2. Next I will be downsizing yet again to a 1/1 stationary RV. So I understand and embrace lots of empty drawers and cabinets. My biggest problem is the things I want to keep and not take with me if I decide to do the slow travel. Knowing that I have 'stuff' left behind such as files, documents, jewelry, coins, framed art, firearms...not sure how I would feel about that. I am still on the fence about it. The 'what ifs' are killing my plans and my serenity!!! I will probably take a few short trips before making those decisions.

      Hi!! We haven't had any concerns while traveling, and it often ask myself that thinking if I were traveling alone. As far as safety in Airbnb's, we've never encountered a camera and haven't had concerns for our possessions. Most have a locked entry door as well as your personal door. There is always a risk, but we've felt safe.
