  • In this video, we show you what to pack for full-time travel in carry-on only. It wasn't long after we left for our first year of full-time travel that we began realizing the packing mistakes we were making. Over the next 7 months of travel, we continued to learn and recently made a trip home to regroup and adjust our packing to carry-on only. Thanks for watching!!

      I used to travel for business and got in the habit of always packing a rubber doorstop -- shove it under the door whenever you're in the room. Better than any lock I've ever found! (I had a colleague who carried two: she'd keep one on the bathroom counter in case she ever had to run and barracade inside. Sounds extreme, but solo females on the road for weeks at a time have seen a lot...)

    I´ve found that taking less clothes and shoes is always a good idea. Also, depending on the destination and climate there, you can buy some clothes cheaply if you need them. This is usually true in the warmer countries. Also, in warmer countries, if you wash your clothes and hang them up to dry, they will be dry or mostly dry by morning and then you can just rewear them. I often use a hairdryer (the one provided in your hotel or airbnb) to dry off any clothes that are still slightly damp. I usually use shampoo to handwash my clothes (usually a clear type of shampoo rather than a creamy one and also take a nice new dishwashing sponge and use the same shampoo to wash any cups or dishes if eating in hotel room) and never wear or pack jeans as they are too heavy and difficult to handwash and take ages to dry. Better to take tights and several pairs of leggings which you can even wear on top of each other if it is cold. It is good to take at least one pair of good pants/trousers though. Wearing a good pair of walking shoes or sneakers/trainers on the plane means using up less space in your luggage and less weight. You can pick up things like flip flops and swimsuits, shorts etc at your destination if and when you need them. Good idea to take a plastic cup and plate and cutlery (but good solid ones rather than the cheap plastic ones which can. break, which happened with a pack of forks I bought once from a Spar type shop). Leggings and long sleeved t shirts are my essentials as you can wear some to sleep and wear some outdoors. My final tip, always have a bottle of water that you buy after going through security and have a pack of potato chips and at least one roll of toilet paper in your carry on bag. Good idea to have some small packs of tissues with you too. I have had instances where the flight had delays and/or announced they had no food. At least if you have your own water and snacks, you can take your medications if you need to and survive. If you take enough snacks or buy something to eat in the airport on arrival with you, you can also survive the first night at your hotel without having to go out to find food if you arrive late at night or are just really exhausted after your trip. Also good to take a few lightweight plastic bags to put any unwashed clothes/laundry or shoes into so you can keep them separate from the clean stuff in your bags if you are moving from place to place and need to pack them in a hurry.

    I have that identical black bag and the strap works almost doubled and fed through belt loops. Its flat enough to fit under a shirt and everything is close to your body. The straps have strong hooks and make it possible to use in belt mode and long enough for a crossbody when out and about or a wallet in another bag. Enjoy your travels and stay safe and healthy

    After 30 years of travel for months at a time, i pretty much pack like you guys. A couple things, i like pockets on the outside of my bag to pull out or stuff something in it in a hurry. I tend to pack as if im going away for a week, and that covers it almost always. One point though, i always leave room for souvenir shirts or something similar, I usually bring a couple less tshirts, and use the room for the ones i buy on the road. Great video, ill be showing my girlfriend and get her packing!

    Great tips well presented. One of the things I learned to maximize space is to roll your clothing items tightly. You wont believe how much extra space it creates. So far on our couple of 3 week trips to Europe, we have managed with one duffel, and a backpack for each of us. Reason for the duffel being practically no weight. We were well under the limit on weight imposed by local European Airlines and were always under 8Kg / 18 lbs. The only hassle with the duffel being having to hand carry it. Of course for the longer trip like yours what you have presented is ideal, and you just pay for one large check in when flying. Great job guys. Just got back from the Greek island and Amalfi coast, Naples area 3 week trip and trying to catch up on your Vlogs. Cheers.

    I LOVE my Eagle Creek travel bags! They make, or at least used to make a carry on bag that you zip a backpack to. You have an extendedable handle to roll both bags as one, backpack straps to carry both on your back or one on the back and one on your front. I would roll up to check in, unzip the backpack and never had a problem. Once in the Airbnb I would leave the carry on and just walk around with the back pack.

    • @BrianandCarrie

    I love this video. As someone who has been on hundreds of trips over the years, it took me a long time to optimize my packing. I also hate flip flops Brian, but they are great in hostels/zimmers/etc. especially in the bathrooms. I have the added weight of a full camera gear setup (DSLR), laptop, associated adapters/chargers. You definitely learn what you actually need vs what you think you need after a few trips. I know it sounds weird, but I also pack clothes that are about worn out (socks, underwear, t-shirts that are basically ready to throw out) and on the trip in the trash they go. Out with the old, in with the new. I also make sure to leave space for souvenirs. Anything essential always goes in carryon (I mostly travel all carryon now, even for trips as long as 30 days.... yes, it's an art not a science). Again, great video!

We had planned a trip with my brother and his husband well before we thought there was a chance that we would be on the road in 2023. We planned this trip a few months ago. We are going to Lake Maggiore. This wasn’t planned as a low-cost trip though. Lol. We went to Italy in 2019 and had planned to go back the very next year. Of course Covid hit and we have had to cancel an Italy trip twice.

    My husband and I just finished watching this packing video of yours and boy did we laugh at ourselves! We started our travel time beginning of August 2022 and first landed in Italy. When we started we had 2 backpacks, a duffle bag, a large rolling 70lb suitcase, 2 blankets and 2 pillows...this was all of our possessions and we thought we had it right....NOT!!! Try fitting all that on a train!!! We downsized even more really fast at each stay and we have our share of "left behinds" too. In the middle of August we let go of the 70lb monster luggage and duffle bag. It is September and we now only own 1 backpack each, a purse and another backpack. Our outfits include 3-4 shirts/blouses, 4 bottoms, 3 pair of underwear, 2 sports bras and a pair of shoes each and a pair of sandles for the Mrs. We plan to buy clothes as we need them and then leave them behind! We have subscribed to your channel and relate to your videos the most of all vloggers. We are looking forward to visiting the Balkins thanks to ya'll😊

I have two questions after watching your video... 1) I notice you have a travel adapter, but not converter. Have you been fine so far without a converter? Also, unless I missed it, I did not see a hair dryer. Do you find most places you go have one? Or just neither of you need one? Thanks so much!

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem +1

      Hi Michelle!
      We agree that carry on is the only way to go! As far as a adapter, we haven't needed one for any of our electronics. But I did intentionally purchase a hair straightener and hairdryer that both have dual voltage. Now about the hair dryer...I carried one the first 7 months we traveled and ended up not needing it once as the Airbnbs we stayed in had one. So this 6 months traveling I decided to leave it behind. Of course now I've needed it many times (isn't that the way it goes). I have had many Airbnbs that say they have one and it either isn't there or didn't work (even though I make sure the listing says there is a blow dryer). I asked one place to provide one as it was listed in the Airbnb listing, but in the end this is such a hassle to always worry about or deal with. Needless to say, it WILL be in my bag when we return home over the holidays 😊. Cheers 🍻

So how about ironing clothes (travel iron), do you use laundromats for washing?, do you use wallets or travel wallets or just loose currency and cards in the small purse? do you use safes for your valuables at places you stay? And I guess if you are not creating looks for your insta travel photos - it is easy go with the basics you outlined! I saw one guy on CZcams that puts all his electronics in his carry on backpack in case they insist on checking in carry on luggage (sometimes happens) so he does not lose his expensive equipment in case luggage does not show up along with some basics to live on while waiting for his lost luggage in case that happens.

    I was so smug finally wearing my REI belt (purchased through your link) through security in Spain that I forgot I was wearing Birkenstocks with metal buckles. Epic security fail. 😂😂😂

      HA, too funny!!! As much as we prepare for airport security one of us still get searched half the time!🙄

      I once wore a lightweight pair of pants that had sparkles on the back pockets, held in place by metal studs. 🤦🏼 TSA guy laughed his head off.

    Hi Carrie just seeing how you have been going with that personnel bag, I like the space it gives you but I’ve always used a backpack for ease of carrying and to keep my hands. Does it get heavy and difficult to carry around ?

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem +1

      Hi, Carol. I really don't carry it much. It attaches to my luggage so I can roll it around. We will be doing another updated packing video in a few weeks and will cover how it works.

    Hello. Great video, exactly what I needed. I am planning to travel to Georgia in September. I looked at Away carry-on luggage. I am not sure which size to buy. I will be flying Turkish airline. Did you have any problems with a larger carry-on size? I thought it might be to big. I don’t want to be stoped and forced to check it in. Thank you!

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem

      Hi, Anna. We have never been asked any questions about our Away carry-on and they easily fit in the overhead bin. We have even noticed people taking carry-on luggage that seems to be bigger than ours. We have already saved half the amount of the luggage itself simply by not having to pay fees to check bags. Thank you for watching and safe travels.
      Cheers!!!🍻

    Hi Brian and Carrie. As far as the decision to go for the Bigger Away Carry On, have you had any issues being able to bring it on any planes or fitting it in the overhead? And if so, how do you handle that? Will they check it at the gate, and would they charge you?
    Size seems fine domestically, but curious if you've had issues on international airlines. Thanks...trying to decide between the two sizes.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem +1

      Hi, Paul. We have not had any problems at all. The bigger carry-on has plenty of room in the overhead. We even flew a budget airline and it fit in the measuring device they had at the ticket counter. If there is ever a problem, they will check the bag for you and yes, you will be charged. We have saved the amount of our carry-on already just buy not having to check it.

    Just found your channel. You guys are great and I am learning alot - especially with this one. BUT it REALLY is so hard for women to travel light esp with fine curly hair and sensitive skin from hell! Oh and a CAT :) That being said I will certainly use some of these tips. I have been living in Mexico almost 4 years, accumulated way too much, and now preparing to finally hop across the Atlantic. 1st stop, Portugal :)

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem

      Hi, Randell. We don't travel to cold climates. We leave all of our winter clothes in a suitcase back home in a family member's closet. Maybe someday when we feel adventurous we may plan a trip somewhere snowy and cold. For now, we enjoy the warm weather. 😀

    Those carry on bags are huge. I am always amazed how big carry on is in the US Try a 7 kg total for all carry on limit. And yes my small back pack has been weighed.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před 2 měsíci +1

      We flew all through SE Asia with those restrictions using these bags and only checked our bags once, thankfully. It's hard for anyone to stay under the 7 or 8 kg 🥺

      @angelc6395 Před 2 měsíci

      @BrianandCarrie I was curious about that as I will be traveling through SE Asia soon with their 7 kg weight limits. Thanks for the info. I'll be purchasing a bigger carry-on in the future. If I have to check my carry-on once in a while, it's still worth it.

      Hi Sue, we have used packing cubes in the past. We found they are great to keep everything separated and organized but didn't find that they saved us any space. We will see how it works out not using them and see what we think when returning home in Nov. Thanks for watching!!

    Great video! We are just wondering about the weight of the carry-on suite cases? My feelings are that different airlines in different parts of the world have various size and weight restrictions. Thanks again for your informative video :-)

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem +1

      Hi, Dean. Great question, we have not had any problems to date with size or weight. You won't have any problems with the major airlines, it is the budget airlines that can be tricky. We have flown Ryanair without any issue. We use the Away bigger carry-on ( no affiliation ) if you want to look up the dimensions. Thank you for watching and safe travels.

      I wonder this too. My family and I just flew to London on Virgin Atlantic with almost the exact set up in bigger AWAY carry-ons and our bags got weighed and we had to go down 2-4 kilos (depending on the person). This also happened on a flight to Amsterdam. Maybe luck?! All to say, I do think weight *could be an issue though even for a carry on….

    Amazing how many clothes you fit in only half of your carry-on. I'm going to a cold climate and for 6 weeks and I'm packing less so I'm keeping my hopes high that everything will fit

      Hi, Anne. We do pack for 6 months at a time so we had that in mind when we packed. This was our second time packing and it was a lot less than when we packed our first time around. We will have another packing video coming out when we pack for Southeast Asia in December. You will see that we are going to pack even less. We learn as we go!!😆 Thank you for watching our channel!!

    I like your travel slippers, can you tell us where you got them? The one item if find essential is a toilet kit, not a bath room kit, but one for going to the toilet, let me explain. In China, the toilets in bus stations and rail stations can leave a lot to be desired! They are usually squat toilets, often there is not hook on the door, the floor is wet with what I cannot imagine, and the lock on the door is missing. You DO NOT want to put your coat or bag on the wet floor! So in a small Ziploc bag I carry two "S" hooks to hang my bag and coat over the door, a portable door lock from Amazon and some toilet paper (you never know!) I would not travel without it!

      @BrianandCarrie  Před 3 měsíci

      We got them at a grocery store in Santorini 🤣... They were about $3 and we loved them. We since replaced them with similar ones commonly found at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Great tips on the essential bag... That is always a gray area.
