And thanks for replying! :) As an absolute diehard DJS fan, I never thought I'd discover a modern singer who can interpret and vocalize the insane technical difficulty of Baroque opera (though, of course, Dame Joan was a coloratura Queen who had the versatility to span different operatic eras). I am just so incredibly pleased that we have an artist like Julia who so brilliantly shines in the Baroque style and seems to have decided to stay in that lane (because she OWNS that lane!). I absolutely love her voice SO much and it continues to improve as her career advances ... I love witnessing this! I'm totally on board with you! Footnote: In my opinion, it has been way too long since Julia released an album - and with her voice sounding the way it does now, she could truly produce a masterpiece ... and I'm getting impatient, haha. I'm sure she's busy touring and commanding the stage in every role she sings/plays, but I do hope she can find some time to make it to the studio so her zealous fans like us can have something new and fresh to listen to on repeat! For me, I've gotta go with Lezhneva. The way she interprets the Baroque era of opera with such precision in her coloratura is just magic to my ears! Non capisco tutto questo! Non c'è niente da scegliere. Ogniuno di queste artiste interpreta questo brano con la sua tecnica vocale e tutte sono gradi artiste del bel canto.

Скажут, традиция остаётся, но... очень-очень хочется услышать голоса прошлого. И как бы оценил Гендель сегодняшних див? Время неумолимо летит. Жизнь ускользает. А гармонию, как и во все времена, можно найти только в искусстве. It is always hard to win from the first one who impressed you and the other three don´t. I heard it first by Cecilia and I still think she has the most expression in her voice and also the fullest voice of the four.
Natalie Dessay to me shows unsurpassed musicianship, nuance and technique here. She is never in a rush or showing off, uses various dynamics, sings on the breath unlike some who are doing the coloratura with their larynx. She is my favourite by far.
1st Cecilia! Interpreta, es realmente barroco, como el heavy metal de la época! Pasión, un poco sucio, agil, matiza, casi no se le nota la falta de aire, exacta, no me aburre! La segunda vuelta y final... Dramático! 2nd Julia... Agil, precisa, perfecta aunque le falta un poco de dramatismo a mí gusto. 3er Natalie, es muy sonora y linda su voz, bien en el tempo, muy correcta, muy bien su respiración, aunque ya por momento no la escucho 4a Sabine, hermosa voz pero en este caso con un leve deelay, falta de aire, se notaba mucho al respirar, le falta drama, fuerza en esta aria

Question is wether it is fair to compare these wonderful singers. In the end the listener will choose the interpretation that moves him or her the most. I prefer the performance from Sabine Devieilhe.
the best one presents w/ precision and grace so ultra-feminine and is as lovely as the ethereal Spring. she is delicate and smiles sweetly at us w/ all the encouragement and beauty of a most humane soul. so powerful a voice for a lady singer! the music she brings is a bouquet whose fragrance uplifts and excites! in France, they say 'Par Excellence' yes! pretty amazing surprise as she is very demure & cheery in her photo, Miss Julia! ; )
Julia la plus complète, la plus idiomatique : technique infaillible, joli timbre, style parfait et une virtuosité toujours au service de la musicalité. Un petit coup de coeur pour le timbre le plus soyeux (la vois la plus légère aussi) immédiatement reconnaissable de Natalie Dessay tellement et immédiatement séduisant. Je ne m'appesantirai pas sur l'interprétation bruyante, lourde de Cécilia Bartoli dont je n'ai jamais aimé le timbre ni la virtuosité n'ayant pour but que de se donner en spectacle. Ces appréciations n'engagent que mon goût personnel et l'on doit comprendre que chacune de mes phrases sont supposées débuter par "selon moi".
Ich bin Bartoli-Fan und auch bei dieser Arie von ihr "geprägt". Bei der lyrischen Passage, finde ich ist ihr Stimme aus einer anderen Welt und unschlagbar. Julia Leznehva gefällt mir auch sehr gut, sie kommt meiner Vorstellung des Klangs dieser Arie an nächsten. Cecilia es un torbellino en acción, y le imprime personalidad, le pone su sello inconfundible. Julia sumamente prolija y unos agudos hermosamente ejecutados. Natalie un interpretación espectacular propia de una soprano de coloratura. Sabine una delicia para los oidos, una verdadera soprano de coloratura. De 8:51 a 9:00 min y de 11:32 a 11:42 min pareciera que la voz es parte del sonido del instrumento. Está cómoda con graves y con unos agudos limpios ( 11:46 a 11:42 min ) y cautivantes. Esta vez me quedo con ella.

Yeah, I agree with you re: the "nationalistic comments" ... singing brilliantly isn't "owned" by any one country and it's crazy to think otherwise! For me (I'm American), I really love Lezhneva's interpretation, although that's just me and my ears and may be due to her repertoire being almost totally Baroque with very few deviations (i.e., some Mozart arias). She really has an incredible voice for that era. That said, however, I 100% agree that Bartoli is an absolute superstar and shines in this aria, as well. She shines in ANY role she sings - as evidenced by her massive career (and discography even) - and I absolutely love her and her ability not only to interpret but interpret EXTREMELY well so many eras of opera! She is truly a Queen among Princesses.
I really like the timbre and coloratura technique of Julia Lezhneva, but when comparing the phrasing I would choose Cecilia Bartoli (although I think she is overacting and bringing too much "vocal fry" here). Sabine Devieilhe's voice sounds truly angelic on high notes, but coloraturas are a little bit better "placed" in interpretations of Julia and Cecilia. Natalie Dessay has a little bit of everything, that's why she is not mentioned often in other comments))
Un choix cornélien ?... Personnellement, j'opterais pour Julia Lezhneva et Sabine Devieilhe, ce qui n'exclut nullement le talent des 2 autres artistes. "Une pensée hostile à la paix" = tout à fait actuel !
Quel tournoi! Julia Lezhneva possède un très beau timbre, une exposition très nette, et la flexibilité nécessaire pour le chant à Collorature. Ce qui ne veut pas dire qu'elle soit elle-même une vraie Collorature. C'est la typique Soprano Lyrique d'Agilità. Malgré l'entrain vertigineux de la musique, elle laisse pointer un certain sentiment, ce qui est très important à l'heure du bilan. Sabine Devielhe est une cantatrice dont le timbre et les aïgus démontrent clairement qu'elle peut tenir sans encombre les rôles de Collorature. Elle arrive avec facilité aux aïgus sans déformer sa voix. Sa tenue est très respectueuse du style, même s'agîssant d'un air de bravoure comme celui-ci. Et puis, elle est convaincante par rapport au personnage qu'elle tient. On sent bien que son travail est du sérieux. Nathalie Dessaye a une technique très soignée. Elle s'adapte avec facilité à tous les rèpertoires, dont celui-ci. Mais qu'elle est sa lecture de Häendel? Il y a quand même un sentiment sous-jacent à ces escalades de vocalises...! Elle y plonge sans en éclabousser une seule goutte... Au Baroque, les vocalises expriment essentiellement l'affectivité, à peu-près absente ici. Quant à Cecilia Bartoli... Euh... elle ferait mieux de s'en tenir à son registre d'Alto, et d' interprèter les rôles qui lui sont pertinents: Dalila, Carmen, La Favorite, Dorabella, Sesto, Mignon, Amnéris, la Princesse d'Eboli... Sa présomption de chanter des rôles de Collorature est nettement opposée à ses possibilités réelles. Elle enregistra, par exemple, une Donna Fiorilla du Turc en Italie de Rossini où elle chante en déça des éxigeances de la partition. Ayant l'habitude de vocaliser toujours à Collorature, elle incorpora à sa voix une espèce de Vibrato authomatisé, qui peut donner l'impression d'une grande souplesse. Bref, son interprétation de l'air de Häendel ici présent est difficile à évaluer. Bilan: Lezhnéva et Devielhe tout d'abord.... Pour Dessaye, il y de la tecnique avec une sereine éloquence, mais où donc est l'expressivité?....Bartoli....¡Mmm! Autant va la cruche à l'eau, qu'elle se noie! Signé: Boileau. The same piece, different and completely unique renditions. They were all incredible but I think the highlight for me was the last bars of Cecilia's DaCapo. I mean, such a strong colaratura up to C#6 and she's a mezzo? Insane!!!

Sabine Devielhe est une cantatrice dont le timbre et les aïgus démontrent clairement qu'elle peut tenir sans encombre les rôles de Collorature. Elle arrive avec facilité aux aïgus sans déformer sa voix. Sa tenue est très respectueuse du style, même s'agîssant d'un air de bravoure comme celui-ci. Et puis, elle est convaincante par rapport au personnage qu'elle tient. On sent bien que son travail est du sérieux.
Nathalie Dessaye a une technique très soignée. Elle s'adapte avec facilité à tous les rèpertoires, dont celui-ci. Mais qu'elle est sa lecture de Häendel? Il y a quand même un sentiment sous-jacent à ces escalades de vocalises...! Elle y plonge sans en éclabousser une seule goutte... Au Baroque, les vocalises expriment essentiellement l'affectivité, à peu-près absente ici.
Quant à Cecilia Bartoli... Euh... elle ferait mieux de s'en tenir à son registre d'Alto, et d' interprèter les rôles qui lui sont pertinents: Dalila, Carmen, La Favorite, Dorabella, Sesto, Mignon, Amnéris, la Princesse d'Eboli... Sa présomption de chanter des rôles de Collorature est nettement opposée à ses possibilités réelles. Elle enregistra, par exemple, une Donna Fiorilla du Turc en Italie de Rossini où elle chante en déça des éxigeances de la partition. Ayant l'habitude de vocaliser toujours à Collorature, elle incorpora à sa voix une espèce de Vibrato authomatisé, qui peut donner l'impression d'une grande souplesse. Bref, son interprétation de l'air de Häendel ici présent est difficile à évaluer. Bilan: Lezhnéva et Devielhe tout d'abord.... Pour Dessaye, il y de la tecnique avec une sereine éloquence, mais où donc est l'expressivité?....Bartoli....¡Mmm! Autant va la cruche à l'eau, qu'elle se noie! Signé: Boileau.

They were all incredible but I think the highlight for me was the last bars of Cecilia's DaCapo. I mean, such a strong colaratura up to C#6 and she's a mezzo? Insane!!!
Bien trop difficile ! Pourquoi comparer après tout ?… tantôt vous préférerez l’une, tantôt l’autre. Bref, il en faut pour tous les goûts, pourvu que cela touche l’âme et le cœur 😉
Elles ont toutes des voix magnifiques et une technique parfaite, dans des styles différents.
