I am an audio engineer who teaches at a Community College in San Francisco. Your description is very well done and I'm certain that everyone who is new to this appreciates your wonderful explanation here. THANK YOU!
Maam how do you adjust the computer sound volume? I want my voice to become much audible than the background computer sound. Thanks in advance for the response!
Shnzoned the computer doesn’t add sound. Do you mean the sound of the space you are in? That would be your acoustics in the space and the ambient sound of your space. You have preferences in whatever software you are using and you can adjust the sound in the sound or audio preferences.
haha, I actually am pretty tech savvy. :) Over the past 15 years, I've created dozens of websites, taught myself how to record and engineer music, do graphic design, ads, and numerous other things. :)
@@DAlchemiss I don't think it's so strange to assume a music teacher/physical trainer is not a techie; it's not really a tech oriented job. She proved me wrong ;-)
I didn’t read all the comments, so I don’t know if this was said already, but if you want the best audio for digital music rather than your own music or voice you want to use “Share Computer Audio”. If you are doing something like a fitness class this is the way to go. You do this after your zoom meeting has started by going to the Share menu, selecting advanced at the top, then select share computer audio and press the share button in the corner. A banner will show up on your and the other meeting members screen saying that audio is being shared. Anything you now play from Spotify or CZcams or iTunes on your computer will be shared without any loss to everyone else’s computer. No loss from the mic or the internet. Even when you use “Original Audio” it is still being sent over the internet phone protocol, which can (and does) drop packets. Hope that helps.
Yes, I've heard this. It doesn't with that well for music lessons or fitness classes where the instructor needs to give verbal cues. The class can't hear them. They could buy gear, but my purpose for this video was to show a way to do that's inexpensive and possible for anyone. 😊
Zen Fitness Try the instructions I said above and yes you would play from your computer (although you can use a separate Bluetooth speaker). Health Sounds Music is correct, however, in that your spoken cueing can be difficult to hear unless you use a separate mic. Bluetooth connected headphone/mic like you use on your phone should work fine. You will then need to set your input (mic) and output (speaker) in the Audio settings. A little testing with volume levels will help.
@@toadlguy This is helpful thank you. Could you please clarify/confirm then .. If I am using a bluetooth phone headset/mic (Jalabra 45) and cueing into it .. Doesn't hurt of course to disable them, but you don't actually need to disable 'Suppress Background Noise' options if you've chosen the "Enable Original Sound" option in your meeting. Enabling Original Sound automatically disables all of Zoom's audio processing, including the Suppress Background Noise options (if you right-click/ctrl-click on the dialog "Show in-meeting..." to bring up the contextual menu, it will confirm this). Oh BTW, I have a Mac. In the app, the path to these options is Zoom.us/Preferences/Audio/Advanced. HTH
Thanks for the shortcut options! It's good to know where everything is too. I have my students who can disable the background noise, but they can't also have their Original Sound on, otherwise it causes clipping.
@@HealthSoundsMusic pleased to hear my comment was useful. As to clipping when your students turn on Original Sound, isn't that just a matter of them reducing the input levels on their microphones? @@PaulRedfern that's definitely an option, however I didn't have time to test levels with all of my students, especially because this was all new to them! It was easier to control what I could on my end. 😊

Laurie, this has been the most informative posting that I've seen on Zoom, and your presentation is totally charming. You must be a good music teacher. Thanks for that. Thanks that's the most useful and informative video on zoom settings that I've seen. All the others just tell you how to change the settings, but you explain why they need changing and what the effect is. Great.
This is helpful though, as you point out, it requires lots of computer and internet resources. I’ve been doing the backend for Zoom church services, and learned early on that music and vocals can’t come from different locations, as you also point out. I started merging video tracks of vocals and accompaniment into a single video and sharing that via Zoom. There’s a setting in the screen share , which I think does what you’re describing but just for the screen share. While sharing your screen or window, you can click the three dots on the black bar at the top of your screen and select “optimize video for share.” This makes the sound that broadcasts from the video much better for participants.
Thank you for this valuable information. I'm trying to conduct piano lessons via Zoom, and was about to give up when I viewed your video. Maybe it'll work after all!

Brilliant, so clear and easy to follow. I've been running a beginners Ukulele Group plus hosting Music/Comedy parties using CZcams playlists I've created. We were experiencing all kinds of audio problems but thanks to your video those should be no more - just waiting for my Ethernet Cable & Adaptor from Amazon to arrive to complete your list of suggestions. Stay safe...….
I'm so happy to have helped! My son is learning Ukelele and loves it! They don't do group lessons though so I can only imagine the kind of audio nightmare your group has been having! Best of luck to you!
Your mic (and most usb condenser mics like that model) highly benefits from being closer to the speaker's mouth, that's also a good tip for better audio.
Thank you so much!! No more warped and wobbly music! You are a super star. Much better for an exercise class. The only thing from using the original sound is that when I’m then close my voice seems to be slightly distorted/ crackly. Is this because I’m talking too loudly? I haven’t got an external mike available btw so having to use the Apple inbuilt on on MacBook. Thanks again
Laurie, thank you so much for putting this together. I had figured out alot of this myself because I speak to a friend in Brazil often; but the advanced setting informastions has REALLY helped me a better, more pleasant voice teacher. I have been making a lot of my own mp3s in the past 4 years because the students do not play piano so I was a little ahead with this aspect before this all started. It does take a lot of extra work for the teacher yet my students are doing so much better because they are learning to listen and use solfeggio knowledge to sing the correct intervals. We are really able to get to the nitty gritty of pitch and intonation with these settings. Yay!!
Thank you so much for this! I was previously using the "Share Computer Audio" that I lot of people mention to teach my Zumba class. However, I couldn't talk over my music at all. Your setting recommendations worked really well. My participants said that the music quality was great and they could hear me cue them.
YES! THANK YOU! With these settings the music isn't quite clear as sharing the computer music, but without an expensive setup, your class can't hear you. I'm so glad it worked for you!
Bethany Gonzales I am using a Microsoft Surface Pro computer that I set up on my living room coffee table. For my Zoom settings, I follow the instructions exactly as they are given in this video. All my Zumba participants have told me they like this approach much better since they can hear me cue and the music quality is very good.
This was extremely helpful. I am a private voice and piano teacher. I took notes and will use your ideas for a virtual recital this year , if I cannot find a venue for us to hold the recital. I appreciate your enthusiasm, and helping us all as we navigate this process.

Your son could check out my own CZcams channel - Mikelele’s Tune A Day to see an enthusiastic player in action!
this is so helpful. thank you so much
This was super helpful-thanks so much!!
Friendly and so helpful. This is wondeerful. I will get my listeners to change their settings, too.
Super helpful. Thank you for this, will try today
Thank you! I teach dance and I'm a movement coach. These changes are going out a lot.
Helpful info - thanks from a guitar instructor.
I can't thank you enough! thanks so much for this info.
This is great help and I agree with Lisa Wall-Urgero. You have great video presence! Thank you so much!!
Ha, thank you!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! OMG I''ve been searching and searching and you're the first person I've ever heard giving answers on this!!!
Great! That's why I did this video. :) There's plenty of tutorials on how to share the sound within Zoom, but that doesn't work for all applications.
Thank you Lorianne. I've been having the exact same problem while trying to teach music through Zoom. I'm going to implement your advice immediately.
Thank you so much for this. At last an easy to understand lesson in setting up Zoom to play music and sing live with others
This is awesome! Thank you so much! (I am a music teacher.) I am definitely sharing your video!
the jamkazam client is a great alternative for zoom and it is made for musicians and music teachers..
Do I have to use jamkazam so my keyboard get better sound while on ZOOM? Or I can play my keyboard in Zoom without it?
Pedro Jorge Hernandez Rios you can use without it. It all depends on how you are setting up.
Thanks so much. Very helpful and clear.
A lot of useful information shared. Many thanks.
Gold on the settings! Thanks so much!
This information is quite helpful. I'm a Vocal Coach so these settings recommendations were very timely. Thanks!
Very helpful, thank you! (And you have a great video presence :)
Thank you so much!
Thank You very much, from the Netherlands! Great insights!
Thank you for the clear explanation! I'll give this a try.
Thank you so much for your comments. Will try this immediately.
Your video was very well done, indeed. Great presentation! If its alright, I will use this in my English classes in Japan. Cheers and be safe!!!
Yes, of course it's alright!
Thank you! We are going to try out those new audio settings tonight!
You've just saved my life! Thanks a lot from Sweden! Take care
It might be because of the internal mic.
Yay!!
very helpful and well presented. Thank you.😀
This was perfect. Thank you!!!
Great!! Just what info I needed. THANK YOU!!
Thank you so much, exactly what I was looking for...couldn't find it elsewhere :-)
That's so good to hear! You're welcome.
Thank you! Just the help I needed!
Very helpful. You have a delightful, warm personality!
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Laurie! This saved my spin class!!
Thanks for the advise. This was really helpful
Thanks for this simple and sweet straight to the point, much appreciated, xx.
Wow. Thanks. This was very helpful.
Can you tell me how you set your stuff up??
Bethany Gonzales I am using a Microsoft Surface Pro computer that I set up on my living room coffee table. For my Zoom settings, I follow the instructions exactly as they are given in this video. All my Zumba participants have told me they like this approach much better since they can hear me cue and the music quality is very good.
Simple to follow, and I'm trusting that the changes I made will make a difference. Thank you for your help!
This was extremely helpful. I am a private voice and piano teacher. I took notes and will use your ideas for a virtual recital this year , if I cannot find a venue for us to hold the recital. I appreciate your enthusiasm, and helping us all as we navigate this process.
