      I just had my second real boss fight on hard mode and while I admit I definitely made one mistake during the fight, I HAD to use a good chunk of my healing and revive supplies just to win due to the nature of the command system turn order. I never appreciated just how easy regular ATB style made TB games. I much prefer the "plan out your turn." way because there are costs to making the wrong decision.

    Thank you so much for this review. Saying the game “never left the PS2” is the best description. That’s exactly what I was hoping for. The “old school” games like Breath of Fire, Suikoden, Legend of Dragoon definitely had their drawbacks with certain dated mechanics, but that lack of hand-holding is literally a breath of fresh air in this current age of gaming. Sure they’re a bit clunky, but they’re diamonds in the rough.

  • @NepBeard
    @NepBeard Před měsícem +39

    I’m about 12 hours in and my only real complaint about the battle system is the combination of the fact that you have to commit the whole party’s actions moves without any idea of who the enemy is targeting AND the enemies are allowed to switch their targets on the fly, so if you revive someone before the enemy moves, they can just switch targets and knock them out again.
    Having to commit your actions ahead of time also means you can’t revive someone AND heal them on the same turn unless you do a party wide heal. And that heal better be before the enemy moves, or the revived party member will be knocked down again.
    I wish that at the VERY LEAST, the enemy party had to play by the same rule of having to commit to their target in the same turn

    It definitely needs some quality of life upgrades on the Switch. Also the game seems quite a to drag out all the kinds of battles but random battles. You can warp out with a stone. Is there an item that will let you teleport back to your headquarters like the blinking mirror in Suikoden? That could at least make it easier to get back to headquarters and heal up. I suppose if there were a blinking mirror like item (with 2 way teleporting capabilities - to HQ and back), it would certainly make things easier. If they don't have that in this game, that would be a good addition for EC 2.

    The fact that it seems to be so light on modern quality of life things doesn't bother me one bit. You pretty much summed up my feelings towards this game perfectly. It definitely feels like a game for fans of the Suikoden series first and foremost and that is both its strength and what helps the game stand out, but can sometimes be to it's detriment as well with certain design choices. Overall I think touchy menus and the writing being a little more generic fantasy then I would like are basically my main complaints, but overall had a blast with this game so far and I've barely been able to put it down since I got it.

    Thanks for the warnings! I do love the old RPG and felt there was something missing! But the warning reminded me what it is! Thanks to the QoL changes in modern RPG, I felt that "emptiness" I felt was "the bullashit difficulty spikes of old" and WOW I can't believe that when I was a youngin (37 this year) I was like "god I hope this shit disappears from JRPG FOREVER" but when they did, I missed them to the point the sometimes feeling SLIGHTLY (only like 5% even with my FAVORITE Modern RPG) empty when this doesn't happen (I'm always spouting "make your own difficulty" in RPG that get EASY when you know the system like Persona 5 OG and Royal if you abused certain systems! Yet turns out I secretly disliked having to do that abit because I never know if it's "too hot or too cold" where here and the past, the game was like "oh, you want to PLAY FAIR, okay have fun with this difficulty spike boss" which frankly I feel the boss should be as tough as fight)
    But I must ask David.........how many "Forced Lose Fights" should I except (no need for a number, just a rating of Low, Medium, TOO MANY TO COUNT/RATE) so I can see them coming and not waste items trying to win a battle I was meant to lose (serious creators, the mistake of those in the past was not SHUTTING OFF THE ITEM MENU TO AVOID COMPLAINTS! Yes I get that if they were shut off that would "RUIN THE SURPRISE" but it's still annoying trying to win something and then just to lose because "Thou must" Railroads! Last time I saw a JRPG NOT do this was Tales of the Abyss where the first Lose PURPOSELY gimped you (Luke's first fight with a Living Human Enemy) and the cutscene before made it OBVIOUS! and the fight with Asch after "THAT SCENE" where you can win, and Asch doesn't just go SUPER SAIYAN and kick your ass! The stress of everything up to that point (Luke being betrayed by Van), the battle exhaustion caused him to FAINT after the fight. But it's clearly shown Asch got his ass handed to him and I do believe you get rewarded for winning! THOSE are the "Lose Fights" I like! Where you don't FEEL like you are railroaded and the victory is acknowledge even by the story without needing to BULLSHIT/RAILROAD you into a defeat! (Just don't BOTHER letting us have a CHANC at victory even in a NG+ as players WILL attempt to win those fights to middle finger the developers by "Finding a way" before the "They are invincible for some reason" is pulled!)
    Curious about Switch Performance as I'm thinking of getting this for my Switch OLED

    I know QOL is something we all been conditioned with including myself, so I did find myself slightly annoyed at certain things. However, Not being told any hints for the first abandoned mine. All those twists and turns finding a way to get to treasure chests that are of different elevation. I just see losing at boss battles as being more prepared by way of leveling up ( it's so frustrating in JRPG s where you have to focus on slowing down your leveling to be optimal level so you don't steam run the boss. That boss right before getting your castle was hard that I had to use a warp out and change my party to include the healer and buy items.
    I do wish some QOL were there, but once you realize it's something you can't do ( at least right away) I just got used to it and didn't bother me nearly as much.

    One thing I hate in any tribute rpg games where they include the flaws from their inspirations. Those games most likely had flaws because of hardware limitation. In todays age, you dont have those so why include them? Those annoying mechanics/inconveniences are not anybody’s fond memories and what they want in a new game. Every developer does this with tribute/homage games and it’s annoying. Refusing to evolve or adapt.

      They are my fond memory and I’m thankful. One reason final fantasy is ass now. Not saving on the world map and having dash boots and also random battles were not hardware limitations since the SNES. They were done on purpose.

    • @fanskucing597
      @fanskucing597 Před měsícem +1

      Not saving anywhere is a challenge. Also limited items use.
      Being able to save anywhere is just too easy. What's the point of dying then? You are supposed to survive until at least saving point.
      The 'you can save anywhere' is only fitting for open world games nowadays. Where it is non linear and wide world, annoying to get to the same place all over again.
      And if you can stack too many items - that means you must designs the boss battles that can be faced with stack of items - entirely changing how the entire gameplay designed.
      The only outdated things is probably annoying random encounters where you already over leveled, but that can also be handled like in pokemon 'repellant' or something.
      In Suikoden clone with so many characters, the random encounters are high regardless of level so you can test out as many characters as possible.
      Basically it's the entire gameplay design you're criticizing.
      Basically the strategy to use item is also counts.

      There could have been a few QoL enhancements like a better auto save and more accessible save points. Although I'm really enjoying the old school vibe of this game and I too can't put it down!

    First of all, want to say thank you for the great and detailed review! I know you had mentioned random encounters are not as frequent but is it feasible to grind levels in the game? As a fan of old school JRPGs like the old dragon quest games, I do enjoy grinding out levels at times to just feel a lot stronger than it was intended.

    This tends to be a bit of a hot take among older jRPG fans, but while I loved Suiko2, I just hated Suiko1. There wasn't any one thing that was a dealbreaker, but there were just so many inconveniences with obvious solutions - it felt like death by 1000 paper cuts. The reason I'm bringing this up is, while I hope it gives me a more of a Suiko2 vibe, the review reminded me of how I felt about Suiko1. I'm cautious, but optimistic.

    glad you like the game! I'm not sure if I can stomach the retroness in Eiyuden like the one thing you said about back-to-back boss fights without access to blacksmith or save unless you go out of the dungeon yourself. That said, since it will come to gamepass and I really love the art style, I'll at least try it out. I loved Suikoden back in the day but haven't gone back to play them in such a long time so maybe I'm too spoiled by modern game design lol
    Anyway, great honest review!

    You nailed it with this review, because its exactly my experience with it. Couldnt put it down, and drew me into the world like games of old used to. I never thought a game would have that perfect JRPG "vibe" like this ever again after Square totally let down traditional fans with Kingdom hearts Cloud edition-er....I mean "Final Fantasy rebirth"..... But Yoshitaka Murayama recaptured something thats been rarely seen in this genre for a while.
    And its bittersweet, because the creator Yoshitaka Murayama passed away, so the chances of a "perfect" Suikoden experience like this is probably never going to happen again. He went off on a high note, though. I would compare this to Suikoden 2 out of all of them. I think I'm about 75 percent done (I think, based on how many recruits I have ect) and I can't recommend this to JRPG fans highly enough. This game proves that you don't need photo realistic graphics to create a compelling epic.

    I was one of the backers and I couldn’t be more happy about the game. It gives me that suikoden vibes and even though I still have my ps2 and I can play them, this was a brand new story for me to enjoy.
    I haven’t noticed some of the downsides but you made a good point that I’m prob used to the old school way of playing.
    Any hints about character recruitment?

    Been waiting for this review David. I love how unbiased you are to RPGs, even if you love'em. While not perfect, Eiyuden Chronicles: HH is a clear labor of love just like the rest. Great characters, a solid story, magnificent graphic style, etc. The flaws you pointed to either amount to taste or can be patched up later. Overall, this is basically Suikoden I with a facelift. Now let's hope that sequel will be like Suikoden II. Great review.
