These types of propellers actually date back all the way to the 1920s. They were first used in German minesweepers, and are still used in such applications due to their very low acoustic signature. They are far more efficient than azimuth thrusters and they can effect changes in direction nearly instantaneously. They do require more maintenance, however, and are more expensive initially. They typically have a thrust plate beneath them which helps prevent damage due to grounding.

Never thought about the acoustic advantage. Been under a mine countermeasures ship in dock, saw the Voith unit and thought it was probably cos they're less prone to snagging ropes and wires. Noise makes more sense ;-)

Hi, I work on a german tug that uses those propellers. Your points are perfectly right except for the efficiency one. They are sadly not as efficient as azimuth thrusters.
But I can confirm the other arguments!

@EnigmaNZ1 Actually Its an amazing system. Full power in in direction at any time! I would love to have this in a smaller version on my boat for docking, position holding and trailering

My only concern with this drive would be ice, normal prop's are tough massive and bronze, these blades are relatively small and fast moving.

Put enough of these on a boat and the pirates will leave you alone.

Get a frozen piece of cow meat (the big ass ones they hang in butcher shop freezers), attach it to a forklift, and see how many clean slices of meat it can make. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Dunno Chas, these are the smallest I've seen but my experience is limited to ferries the smallest being this one at 30M.

@@camillitech1 So whats the draft on a small 30m ferry??? 3m??
These VSProps would be great for ship stablisers, without adding a 250+kg Gyro, but they stick out too much heh
