    My DIY lamps are made from old glass bait jars with metal lids, a .22 bullet casing with the bottom drilled out and soldered to a hole in the lid and a mop string for a wick. 🙂

    We had bunsen burners with natural gas piped in all public middle and high school classes in early-mid 90s. Never saw or heard of these. Looks like a decent enough idea for a burner. Could be used to cook, heat bricks to warm a small space, sterilize items for emergency first aid, etc.

    My first chemistry set (~1970 had one). I took freshman bio in 1973-4 school year, we had them. They were banned from use in my school (in NJ) when I had chemistry the following year. I taught high school chem from 1992-2021 in a different school in NJ and they were banned in the entire state of NJ by that time for being too easy to spill and too difficult to see the flames.

    You could put a bit of 40mm/1.25"-1.5" tubing around the flame to serve as a chimney, possibly concentrate the heat slightly and get a cleaner burn, with only a 50-75mm long bit of tube. It could be part of the stand used in the lab, with the burner..great video ,

    I love the simplicity of the builds here but the heat expansion & contraction on cooling is more than strong enough to shatter those glass alcohol filled vessels. Either as it heats if the fit is a press in fit or on cooling if it's threaded onto the outside.. I make my wick caps out of tinfoil. It disperses heat well & can't expand or contract enough to matter. Foil can also be shaped to fit any moderate sized opening. Using either the wick it's self or a stick to form the hole works well in shaping.

    Hi, ive followed you over the years, learnt some good ideas. So I thought I'd pass one back... my latest invention believe it or not is a self sustained electric generator. Within the laws of conservation. The main problem it solves is separating the resistance caused by lenzs law regarding the coils to magnets. Obviously without this resistance only drag and bearing friction remain. As you already know there are ways to reduce drag and bearing friction to a very low or even zero percentage. Anyway I will explain although adding a diagram would have been useful. Imagine a wheel fixed around the inside edge of the wheel are magnets also fixed to the wheel are coils on springs , the springs are strong enough to pull the coils away from the magnets. Now rapidly accelerate the wheel the centripetal effect increases forces the coils into the magnets but without giving any resistance to the kinetic energy of the wheel. Now slow the wheel the coils return to their original position. Obviously this means the wheel needs a cycle of acceleration and deceleration. So a system I needed to stop the wheel , store and return all of the kinetic energy back into the wheel. A head on collision is best using a magnet fixed to the wheel and another magnet fixed in a stationery position work in opposition. this would give a near 100 % return sending the wheel in the opposite direction. A small amount of the elec produced should be put back into the system to make up for and drag or friction.

    Is there any danger of the flame traveling through the hole and blowing the thing up if the hole is not tight enough? I tried to ask the last time you posted this but all I got was some ignoramus parroting back "4 mm". I assume my wick material is not precisely the same size and density as yours. Are there in general any important variables to keep in mind for safety and functionality?

    • @whatelseison8970
      @whatelseison8970 Před měsícem +4

      No, that's not possible. If you don't use a cap at all sometimes the neck will break from the heat and if you have no cotton stuffing to prevent spillage it can still be quite hazardous if the bottle should break or spill. However, since there is no source of oxygen inside the bottle the flame will not enter the bottle.

    • @Yezpahr
      @Yezpahr Před měsícem

      The cotton already localizes the fire. If that hole is too tight it won't pull the liquid through. If it's too loose it might let the flame go inside but usually instead of traveling down it would pull more fuel up. Wicks aren't intuitive in any way, especially that way.
      Sometimes a shoelace is good enough and other times an expensive wick is garbage.
      Personally I steer clear of mixing fire and combustibles. I know I'm the unlucky/dumb one that explodes my hand off at best.

    "heat" is a relative term. Isn't superconductivity requiring super-low temperatures. I think the Universe's energy potential comes from the absolute cold state it comes from (lack of energy as potential for energy), increasing that conductivity (super) and expelling magnetic fields, which is why the universe is "expanding". That's my take on it.. Reminds me now of that Viking Giggungagap, the Magical Void from which spring the Universe, where niflheim the cold realm meet mispulheim the hot realm. however superconductivity which has no electric resistance and expels magnetic fields, generally requires near absolute zero tempts, I know some are around -177 celsius, which is why I always talk about the moon being useful as are circadian rythms. I'm no scientist or magician but I'd likely say that from that absolute zero we have the superconductive state of the universe expelling all magnetic fields or magnetospheres of celestial objects, and that heat is an after effect of material states where there is not expulsion of magnetism so that magnetic fields interlink somehow and suffer friction which causes heat. but, there was already expulsion of magnetic fields and superconductivity before cosmological scale objects existed. i don't really know but that's weird because it seems that magnetic fields may be better in cold, while electrical currents that cause heat, well, rely on super-cool materials. Like the primitive Universe. wasn't it super-cool? Why did it heat up? what happened? Did it defrost and now we have these non-super-conductors or w.e.? Good old Gandalf talks about the "Secret flame of Arnor vs. the Flame of Urun (Utumno) " Pretty interesting stories but I think they are just different phases of the same energy / wavelength, the one is the essential 'original state' (say Arnor / cold, originator state) and the other is the final and ultimate state (hot) (the fusion of the universe's superconductive originator state). For instance what if a sphere had an infinite radius? Would the degree between that radius and the circumference be 90 degrees (how can a sphere with an infinite radius be drawn?), or would there be a slight ablation of the right angle? I sometimes wish I wouldn't say anything, I really do. But, that super-cold state creates superconductivity and pushes magnetic fields out. However in that sense in being-antimagnetic it does act upon magnetic objects so that in being anti-magnetic it could be said to act in the realm of magnetism still, Mesmer and all... so it may be that the absence of temperature or the scope of its absence consequates the degree of temperature. Interesting note as a linguistics postgrad rambler that nephilim in the bible talks about fallen angels / giants while niflheim is the land o frost giants. We should also note that hex from protogermanic roots and the semitic term haj (hagar who cried for ismael) share similar meanings. Truly a fan of etymology but, science too. I guess I'm trying to say somehow is that cold potentiated heat, but I'm not sure how to explain it properly. The forced assertion that semitic and the indo-european language phylum/phyla(e?) are and always were wholly separate just shows the limitations of history extending into prehistory as does science extend into this beautiful world, as we quest far from home. But, home is where the heart is - the spirit-flame :) This is also why I am against the notion of AI being in any way sensible, as Ursula LeGuin and they (Wiener in his 1950s book "The Human use of Humans) talk about the energy shared in human communication. Btw hag refers to witch, or hex... different language phylum, same meaning, similar morphologies and meaning ~ recombinant toil and bubble! hahaha!

    • @whatelseison8970
      @whatelseison8970 Před měsícem +1

      Wow, you're kind of all over the place in this one. Just had a couple of things to say. A sphere with infinite radius is, in a sense, a plane. Also, the universe has never been as cold as it is today. As it expands, the universe cools and so in the past it would have been hotter, in the distant past much hotter and at the big band unimaginably hot. Conversely, in the future it will be colder and, assuming the expansion continues unabated, in the distant future it will be colder still. Today, the universe has a mean temperature of 2.7 K, which is already well below the superconducting transition of many materials but the universe as a whole is not a superconductor. Superconductivity is a property of matter. Also, hot substance can still be very good conductors. The plasma comprising the sun for example. Neutron stars are thought to also consist at least partly of superconductive material, as indicated by their extraordinarily powerful magnetic fields and they can be millions of degrees.

    • @NillionaireNewsNetwork
      @NillionaireNewsNetwork Před měsícem

      Thank you, didn't know. I meant when there was no physical matter manifest, that then it must have been cold, as there could have been no matter to cause frictional heat? I don't know how i will ... You say in the future it will be colder. I'm no scientist I wanted to ask about why don't neutron stars rip themselves apart, unless they're under great tension if it is pushing inwards gravitationally while at the same time it's tearing itself apart with that anti-magnetic property. I know though that magnetism and gravity are two different things. I'm totally confused now.@@whatelseison8970

    • @undernetjack
      @undernetjack Před měsícem

      Uh-huh.
      Magnetism and gravity are not two different things, all 'things' are the same thing.
      That is to say, all things are energy vibrating at different frequencies.
      As such, nothing is 'real' per say, however,
      I think you make a few mistakes in your longer rant above. Perhaps some formal education?

    • @NillionaireNewsNetwork
      @NillionaireNewsNetwork Před měsícem

I'm totally confused now. I was referring to superconductivity in relation to a non-physical aspect of reality maybe metaphysical insomuch as although superconductivity is a material property, I meant to say that the absence of material physical matter could constitute absolute conductivity in a state of zero friction. I find it hard to reconcile this with physical science. I know there's a field of study called "digital metaphysics." Perhap I meant to say circle with infinite radius. In this sense physics is studying reality, where reality in my metaphor is a metaphysical convex polytope to physics, which can't wrap itself around the "metaphysical" Universe properly. I'm maybe confusing the topic because I'm referring to the physical universe now as the metaphysical universe insomuch as it exists beyond physical limitations, and that we shouldn't assume that the Universe is delimited to the laws of physics. I'm not dissing science, to the contrary. I'm not sure if I can readily make sense but for me it comes down to Parmenides's argument that being is eternal unchanging and doesn't come from non-being. However I was trying to say at some stage was that non existence, in existing, is not non-existence. And in not-existing, non-existence affirms existence in that if non-existence doesn't exist, we only have existence. He says that being can't come from non-being. But, non-being is also a being in a sense. I'm still saying that energy came fro the absence of energy as energy-potential that it is just a different phase of the same thing. I mean before the big bang it must have been pretty cold. I'm sorry but I forgot my point now @@whatelseison8970
