  • @s.d.1395

    btw your milk takes on that metallic smell because of an ecxess in lipase production...ive heard of some women with this after they drank the mothers milk tea so I don't know if that's a possible connection or not. but it is definitely an excess of lipase, the natural enzymes that keep the milk from curdling on its own. It's perfectly still safe for babies to drink. if ur baby didn't mind the taste then I would not boil it. boiling it kills off a lot of the natural benefits of breastmilk.

      +Olivia Smith thanks so much for your comment! However, warming breastmilk also has many benefits. We have used a bottle warmer (which can reach boiling temperatures) for this entire journey breastfeeding as recommended by our family naturopathic doctor. Also, sometimes you MUST boil breastmilk to remove the metallic taste that occurs when freezing for some women. If your kiddo won't drink the milk based on metal taste, then that would be a must :)

    I loved your video. I am a grandma who is using breast milk for my newborn granddaughter. I was unable to breastfeed my two girls.. with my first I dried up after only a couple weeks of feeding and nothing I did would help it. I even had a lactation nurse come to my hospital room and then again to my home. With my second she had an intolerance to dairy, soy and gluten she was put on Neocate which she thrived on, so even though I missed that bonding time she was happier and healthier. So this information is new to me so thank you.

    If everyone just remembers that "wasting" breast milk (when u have enough to feed the baby) isn't really a waste of money or depriving anyone else of food. The only thing lost is time it took to pump which if you're pumping you're pumping anyways 😙 so try not to let it bother you too much. We have enough stressors in life to worry about throwing out free milk.

    Not everyone is able to create an oversupply though, which can then lead to undersupply problems. I tried so hard to make an oversupply just to provide my daughter with enough and it didn't work more than a few ounces extra for a few months. Every situation is different though. Instead of throwing out "spoiled" milk it can be put in baby's bath for moisturizing, or used as first aid for external cuts, bruises, etc. I've also exclusively used Target Up & Up storage bags for almost a year and a half and never had one leak yet. I think they are so much thicker than the other brands.

    My twins were in the NICU a little over the month. I learn a lot from the nurses. One thing that they told me after warm breastmilk it only good for a hour. After that need you to throw it away. It doesn't matter if it fresh or frozen. 🚫So do not boiling breastmilk and then freeze it. It's not good for your babies.🚫

    The UP & UP brand breas tmilk storage bags are the best I have found. They don't seem leak after freezing and reheating.
    I drink Mother's Milk and thought I had Lipase, but come to find out, my little has a diary intolerance. Any milk pumped and frozen prior to my cutting dairy from my diet, little refused. I still drink Mother's Milk, removed dairy from my diet completely, and now my little will drink frozen and reheated milk with no problem.
    Regarding boiling milk to rid the iron taste, you only need to scald milk before freezing. It does kill of some of the good, but it will also kill of the enzyme (lipase) that will consume your milk and make it unpalatable to the picky eaters. If your frozen milk is high in lipase, some milk banks will take it with no issue, so you don't need to throw it out.

    • @CreatinginChaos
      @CreatinginChaos  Před 6 lety +1

    Previously frozen breastmilk is fine out in room temp longer than an hour. I believe it's 4 to 6 hrs. It's prepared formula that can't stay out in room temp for longer than an hour. I also wouldn't boil breastmilk because it can negatively impact the milk's antibodies, etc.

    • @CreatinginChaos

      I think I might've misspoken in this video. When I said boil, I meant scald. So, it would be at a high heat, but just for a short amount of time. I wouldn't even consider doing this either if my son would have consumed it with the high lipase and metallic taste.

    Pumping before baby is 6 weeks old will create a terribly HUGE oversupply. Painful for both mom and baby, but the haakaa or breast milk collector was the way I went everytime he eats. I save just a little bit from the side hes not eating on. Even if he eats from both sides I still use it on the opposite breast. And then now that I'm back at work I am pumping plenty and he breast feeds at home. So I dont pump on the weekends just use the breast milk collector from lansinoh. I do drink the mothers milk tea, I hate black licorice too but I drink it anyway, it's not that bad lol but I also eat old fashioned oatmeal and ground flax seed everyday for breakfast. I read 2 Tbsp a day is more than enough of the flax. And also I drink lots of water and snack often. And I have had no problems other thn one side likes to produce and let down easier But I dont care as long as I'm feeding my baby! Hes 2 months.

      That is strange! I've never heard of that. Do you work with a lactation consultant? They might have good answers. Also, (as I'm sure you know) your NICU nurses can be a wealth of information! I had a 33 weeker 10 years ago, so I definitely understand how fragile those little ones can be.

    • @mkayla5718
      @mkayla5718 Před 5 lety

      Yahaira Crespo you only need to boil if you have excess lipase in your milk. In that case, you would have to boil it BEFORE freezing, because the lipase would act on the milk in the time it takes to freeze and after that there’s nothing you can do.

  • @QueenRexy
    @QueenRexy Před 7 lety +2

    Were you storing your milk in a regular freezer or a deep freezer? In a regular freezer it goes bad at a month so that's why it tastes bad at six weeks...

    • @CreatinginChaos
      @CreatinginChaos  Před 7 lety

      +Queen Rexy the temperature actually has little to do with it if the milk is below freezing. The metallic taste is from an excess in lipase. Scalding the milk before freezing eliminates this.

      Jessi Lea breastmilk doesn't come in till the placenta releases from your uterine wall. No one needs to pre pump or "rough up nipples" for breastfeeding. Some women may leak colostrum before birth. Please read a breastfeeding book, attend a class and go to a la Leche League meeting. Educate yourself to ensure that you have a great breastfeeding journey!

    • @makaylatresnak104
      @makaylatresnak104 Před 7 lety +2

      it can't hurt to pump before your baby is born. I did for quite a while when I was still pregnant with my daughter and again with my son. Colostrum is the best thing for a baby especially in the beginning. Its highest in antibodies and nutrients. But you won't lose your supply if you pump while your pregnant and then stop before baby is born. Your body will naturally start producing milk as soon as baby is born. Hope this helps. much luck. Enjoy your little bundle.

    • @CreatinginChaos
      @CreatinginChaos  Před 7 lety +10

      +Makayla Tresnak it is actually quite dangerous and can send your body into premature labor. If you're going to pump before baby is born, its recommended to wait until after 38 weeks.

    Regarding whether or not to boil breast milk, that is a question for your pediatrician -- not for a lay person on CZcams. If you want to educate yourself, please consider reputable sources (e.g., the CDC, peer-reviewed medical journals).
    What the lovely girl who made the video chooses to feed her baby is her decision. Although I wouldn't make the same choice with my own child, I certainly wouldn't attack *her choice* to boil breast milk. I don't know her, but I'd be willing to bet that she wouldn't be boiling her breast milk if her baby started losing weight. If her baby is surviving just fine with roughly a third of the fat that (s)he would be getting from unboiled breast milk, so be it! If she has time to make a video, her baby is probably doing just fine! Obviously babies in the NICU need all the fat, nutrients, antibodies, and such that breast milk has to offer, so of COURSE no one would ever recommend boiling breast milk given to a baby in the NICU (I'm responding to several comments below).
    When I watch CZcams videos, I absorb the information that I find useful and leave behind information that I don't. There is no need to attack other mothers' choices. We, as reasonable adults, should be wise enough not to take medical advice from strangers on the internet. Don't make serious medical decisions based on CZcamsrs, CZcams comments, or websites like WebMD. I can tell you first-hand that it is super-annoying & potentially dangerous when patients do that! If you want to know whether or not it is okay to boil your breast milk, ask your pediatrician! In the meantime, educate yourself beyond CZcams & WebMD-esque sites:

    I will never boil my breastmilk. What I did is defrost it and then just warm it up in warm water. I always use that method my mother in law thought me that I never use microwave or boiling it defeat the purpose.

    • @CreatinginChaos
      @CreatinginChaos  Před 6 lety +1

      The reason for boiling was not just to heat it. It is to remove excess lipase - which gives the milk a metallic taste and causes the baby to not drink it. Boiling it removed the lipase and the taste. I would far rather given my child boiled breast milk than to switch to formula.,
