  • Presented by Hannah Johnson
In this segment from the Vic Firth series "Inside the Teaching Studio", Hannah Johnson presents the topic "How to Start Sounding Like Elvin Jones". Hannah focuses on two aspects of Elvin's unique playing style: the triplet ride cymbal feel and "Elvin Latin".
In this new educational series from Vic Firth, we take you "Inside the Studio" of some of the world's top instructors to give you a peek into the time-proven curriculum that has motivated and educated generations of successful teachers and performers!
In our first series, we take you inside the jazz drumming studio of Steve Houghton from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. In each video, Mr. Houghton will describe the curriculum segment, which will follow with a lesson & demonstration from a student from his studio. With each student's presentation, you'll see the immediate application of curriculum to the real world of performance and explanation!
Whether you're an educator or student, you'll be sure to benefit from the concepts and lessons from this series! We encourage your thoughts and questions in the discussion below.

    Hannah!
    Heya I love your playing.
I’m Jessica Jennifer Williams pianist and composer and I’m 73 and I had the honor of playing with Mr Jones at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco. I was the house pianist there and Todd Barken was the MC.
I used to have a trap set and played with Philly Joe Jones after Sumi Tunooki left.
I also played with Tony Williams and we were very close friends.
I’m one of the lucky ones.
My music is everywhere and to hear you play made my day!
    A Love Supreme
    Jessica

Elvin had a telephatic sense for other musicians he was playing with feeling and knowing their phrases. So he could find and create his contributions to their play by his interplay. His drumming went far beyond all technical drum aspects like four way coordination, snare drum technique, polyrhythms and so on though incorporating all of them in his unique way paying tribute to music's parameter time, pulse, form, meter etc. .
If you want to sound like Elvin, it is no easy task as mentioned in the video and can never be accomplished, you should as Elvin be a very gifted and visionary musician. A pioneer who is able to play with the above mentioned parameters as he did, knowing, elastically and with endless joy, fire and above all love for life.

Nice! I saw the Elvin Jones trio perform live at a jazz club in Boston in 1968. It was just Elvin, Joe Farrell on sax, and Jimmy Garrison on bass. No piano, but lots of energy.

Nice and swinging. Enjoyed the piano and Hannah's drumming. Elvin was a genius. He was known for the triplety stuff that she demonstrates. But his up tempo playing was also astounding. Listen to Coltrane's 'Impressions' for 20 minutes of blistering drumming.

yup...you're totally right. fill in the space...another one to use is my favorite things. he does all kinds of ghost notes with pretty much any Coltrane recording and its where i get my basic ghosting technique from as well as my cymbal flow. also expanded this idea into something i call shadow. basically its a cymbal ghost note/snare combination with a twist. done right, it has a sound like a brush with the sticks...requires amazing stick control with pretty much every tap technique you can think of. i'll put a video up and show everyone in the next few days

Hannah, I just saw this for the first time today and frankly, IT'S GREAT! Forget all the naysayers. You're onto something that will broaden your playing tremendously. I taught may years ago and one of the thngs I did was have a student imitate a particular great drummer for a 1 or 2 week period; play as close to the way they play as possible. What better way to absorb another drummers style. Sadly, a few people do that and get stuck; hence, all of those sickening, non-swinging Buddy Rich clones out there like Ken Loomer and Dick Cully. I get the vibe from your video that while Elvin is important to you, you know enough to check out all the other greats and not get stuck. Good luck and keep up the good work!!

Ok so this morning I transcribed the first 8 bars. The 1st 16 bars not as easy as some seem to infer in these comments. It's played as two bars of 3 and a bar of 2/4 the comping would be easy but the ride is phrased in 3 and 5 so it throws you out a bit. I'm learning it bar by bar like a Latin groove. I'll get it in a day I guess. Thanks so much for sharing your great skill in transcribing your great swing too Elvin would be proud.

He was so generous! Back in the day at Ronnie’s in London UK when it was two weeks of two sets per night I got the bug and was there most nights after my dinner gig around the corner. At the end I went up to him “ can I have a pair of sticks to remember you by?” He looked at me a little questioningly and then I noticed many many pairs of sticks laid out on a dressing table! He reached out and gave me a pair! That aftershave stayed on the sticks for a long long time! I said “ Elvin, if you were just in your hotel room what might you do if you wanted to practice?”
He answered “ well, mmm, Er... I’d play mummy daddy rolls on a pillow..Er...slow..erm...but accent the second of each stroke, Er...” then I shook his hand and he was such a great great man. ( I would have been in my dinner suit carrying a stick bag! 19! I’m now mid 50’s) Up to that point all I really knew as jazz was Martin Drew who was great but the first time I saw Elvin, he sat down and launched into a shuffle! It turned my world upside down! I really had never heard anything like it...

I am appalled by the unsubstantiated criticism directed towards Hannah’s outstanding playing/musicianship. It is impossible to replicate any particular individuals style to a tee, REGARDLESS of their accomplishments/musical influence. Hannah is simply doing her best to EMULATE Elvin’s style (and a damn good job at that) so that anyone with half a brain might see a little further into the greatness that was Elvin Jones. If you are here to criticize someone whose intentions are to educate you in the realm of the greats, your pursuit as a musician is futile. To quote spongebob:
“Shut your mouth, you mediocre clarinet (or in this case drum set) player. You pretentious, insignificant artist. Your sniveling creations are worth less than a protozoan’s waste.”

Technically the closest I've heard yet to Elvin. And it must be remembered that his touch was so much lighter in the early '60's. Like here. Later on he seemed to become a brute, hitting the cymbals and tom's like he had something against them. But still keeping that unique Elvin style. Anyway, this vid was great. Top, top drumming. By someone who is not just a drummer but can 'play' the drums.

    @brianrandall3795 Před 6 lety +31

Agreed. I feel like Hannah is like 25% too clean. How I hear Elvin as different from other drummers is more so in his ability to stretch times. Not only does he go from triplets to sixteenths to quarter note triplets etc, but he stretches the time in each of these to where you can't actually write what he does, but he pulls it off by keeping the beat in his head so it just sounds sexy, not disjoint. Just what I hear, not definite. The marches Hannah played were pretty sweet though.

People aren't watching this video for your opinions, they are watching to learn something about a style of drumming from actual educators who made a positive and informative video short. Comments like the one you made really make drum education suck and make people hate all of this. Stop making the internet an even bigger cesspool than it already is.

I saw Elvin kicking his bass drum with a VERY high-heeled boot. If that's part of the secret, I give up!

You can learn to play like Elvin, but only Elvin sounds like Elvin.

I always wanted to sound like Elvin Jones on the drums, but I’m more of a rock drummer.

Most importantly, you have to grunt on the third beat of the triplet.

'Dirty' doesn't begin to describe the difference.
Miss Johnson plays simular note values and time without any of the feel, emotion, grandeur or angst of the original Jones groove. She sounds like herself (which should 'ironically' be the point of the video to viewers and listeners.

Good playing, lesson and analysis of some true Elvinisms. Still doesn't sound like him ;)

Lovin' how some of you are so envious of a girl (probably) in her teens who smokes you all on the drums. Impressive, and the pianist sounds great too. Troll elsewhere. Steve Houghton wouldn't allow this to be published if he didn't approve.

Hannah is a very good drummer! But the title is misleading: yes you can study the greats but you can not and SHOULD NOT even try to sound like somebody else. You can spend 10 lifetimes trying to sound like Elvin and still fail.. or you can spend one lifetime being yourself! The most important contribution from every great artist is that they developed a unique & meaningful voice and brought new ideas that haven't been done before in the same way.

Disagree. Benchmarking the top few players tends to rub off on you and therefore creates a unique sound in itself. I wish I did that 30 years ago.

@@andym28 you got me wrong! Of course i'm constantly studiyng the greats and thats what you should do.. but you must be careful not to become a cheap copy of someone by simply repeating their licks - take those concepts and build on that and don't think that just because you can play a transcription by someone that you are anywhere near that..

The playing was amazing... I️ just cringed heavily at the title and the over emphasis of replicating The Giant EJ.
