I can see his pain, I share his pain, I left my country almost five years ago and the thought of returning there someday sends me into panic and anxiety. Don't think I ever will. There are too many bad memories there.

I had a friend who's from Philippines that been migrated to Singapore for almost 10 years & she recently went back home last year & had such difficulty to adjust herself in the native home, with her family & friends & after around 6 months she went back to Singapore for good because she felt like a foreigner in her own country.
That's exactly how my grandnother feels as well. She's from the Amalfi coast and loved Italy. Unfortunately a senseless robbery resulted in my great grandparents death. My grandmother was able to hide so she was safe, but she was still young so she moved to New York to be with the rest of my family. While she eventually met my grandfather and settled down, her trauma and emotional scars prevents her from going back to Italy to visit.
@@fikri565 same but for me it was the States. Practically grew up there when I returned back to PH it was so hard to adjust. I missed everything I left behind... hopefully I get to go back in the future.
Seeing my country in a movie about my community is sth i've never dared to imagined. This is indescribably beautiful.

As an immigrant I identify with this experience and it really threw me when it first happened. I think the film will find an audience and have resonance.

underrated and deep comment, I always hate when one personality trait dominates over everything else .this seems legit and realistic, a homosexual person can't just think about his homosexuality all the time as the person has a life to live, a job to do, a stomach to feed.

I can relate to this accept the homosexual part. I left Thailand for England when I was 12 and my first return was 14 years later, alone. That feeling of being a foreigner in your own birth home is strange as if time has stopped. I left when I was 12 and return also as a 12-year old boy expecting to see 12-year-old friends. I walk into my old high school hoping to see all the friends and teachers who once wack me with a stick when I ever did wrong but none of them were there. I walk around casually and visited almost every place I once hang out with friends, Bridges where we jump off into the river, streets, shops, and basketball court that was no longer there. Even though I'm Thai, the locals still look at me like a foreigner. Not many have changed but at the same time, everything is. Isn't that weird? Oh despite the odd feeling I felt very much at HOME!
Just a snippet caught from the dialogue made me feel like this is gonna hit home on levels mainstream may not be prepared for, and I’m counting on it!

Just watched this movie; a beautiful story, amazing acting by Henry Goulding, and truly a feel good movie. Henry definitely took some risks as an actor in this movie, and did a fantastic job. Definitely recommend!

I've just found out about the existence of this movie and I'm definitely going to watch it now, I've been living outside my country for almost 20 years and I've decided to go back to stay closer to my parents who are not that young anymore... Every time I came back to stay for a few days for the holidays or some special event in all these years I never really felt at home anymore, those places where I grew up were not same, I was not the same... But now I've decided to go back and start anew. So yeah I totally understand what it feels like to go back to a place where you grew up after so many years and feeling completely lost... Also, Henry Golding is absolutely stunning, such a good looking man and a talented actor for sure.

This is all so inspiring and moving to see, and I am so _PROUD_ to see such a progressive, beautiful and _TRULY REPRESENTATIVE_ story be represented on the MAJOR big screens, but my question is:
_Why couldn’t they have cast an actual actor of predominantly Vietnamese descent in the lead role instead of Henry Golding, a person of half Malaysian half white ancestry..._ 😕
I agree with you it's an inspiring story, but to answer your question, it's because he identifies just enough for the intended audience to watch. Fully Asian male lead roles are usually not allowed, unless it's something to do with kung fu and other stereotypes (Jackie Chan/Jet Li/Bruce Lee/etc).
The irony is this probably wouldn’t be shown in Vietnam :( but no censorship’s gonna stop me from seeing this!!!
