  • The volcano has a new rhythm-meaning now we have to time our visits to see it in action. There’s also currently a dispute between the landowners of the volcano area and the helicopter companies. And the blue smog, or the volcanic smog, is pestering those in the city area, but still, the scientists are not sure how dangerous it really is.

    I think I just feel blessed to have been watching the birth of a shield volcano. To see it grow from a fissure, to vents on a fissure, and then a bit more of a fissure opening, then multiple vents….and then one decided to stand up and be counted…and take off, and grow from a little splatter cone..,and now we are finally realizing that it is probably a ‘tweenage’ shield volcano, just taking a break before it has another massive growth spurt.

    They call the volcano fog “VOG” in Hawaii. I’m not sure if it’s the same thing at your volcano. I love love the T-shirt idea. Those foolish people walking on the lava. Lava can stay hot for years in the tubes & channels. It’s insulated with hardened lava above which is very weak & you go right through it. So I love the T-shirt idea. Also glad the volcanoes still going.

    • @thorman1742

      In Hawaii, the lava reacted with sea water which generates hydrochloric acid, that's not the case in Iceland. The Iceland volcano emits sulphur dioxide (turns into sulfuric acid when you breathe it in) and hydrofluoric acid, so bottom line it isn't really any "healthier"...

      Recent crust is very dangerous, and can be weak in places. No one should be walking on it, and I'm sure the Icelandic authorities are aware. Nonetheless, tourists do stupid things.

    Thank You Valur and Art for the great commentary and footage. Luv the sound of the volcano. Beautiful earth sounds, so similar to ocean waves. Glad that Grapevine is selling 'Don't Walk on the Lava' T-shirts. Luv the 'Polly Approved' 🐾 Capelin! Stay safe. 🌋

    No helicopters today, Valur. They have to fly VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and the volcano fog means this is not VFR conditions.

    Valtur, good to see you. I've been following the Grapevine's Iceland news besides the volcano! Unfortunately I dropped my IPad face down on rocks and broke the screen. I finally got it back and I'm glad you are still here! I do miss Bob the First though. Double, double, toil and trouble! Fire burn and cauldron bubble! Time to wrap the silver up in tarnish cloth and maybe plastic!

    Thank you for the interesting history and discussion of property rights and recreational resources. Here in Montana we have a hard time balancing tourism and conservation, so it is interesting to hear perspectives from around the world. The accessibility issue for people who can't hike was a good point, but so is the importance of enjoying nature in silence (so you can hear the volcano) Love this newscast! always surprisingly relevant, even thousands of miles away

      We have the same laws here in Norway too. But there is a growin problem, especially in winter time when people drives everywhere in the nature using snow mobiles, saying the tracs disappear with the snow in spring, no thoughts or respect for the law and for the wildlife.

    It would be cool if you could superimpose a picture of some buildings, or city blocks from Reykjavik, next to or on top of the image of the volcano, so that we can get a sense of scale.

    • @paulrandig
      @paulrandig Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, I thought about that, too. The distance from the mountain is clear (let's say 1.2km). So fly the drone at the same distance to a Reykjavik landmark an superimpose that picture on a drone shot of the vulcano from the same distance.
