    SunSun's beast of a canister filter, the 704-B, gets cleaned and set up for maximum performance. It's rated at 525 gallons per hour (without media) and includes a UV light option.
    Check it out and let me know what you think, including comments and suggestions on the set up. I'm always learning.
    For those of you alarmed by my blue balls, rest assured that they have since been replaced (it was the only media I had on hand when I filmed this video).

    Hello Ben,
    Thanks for your video on the SunSun 704B. I'm setting up a 150g African Cichlids (AC) tank in the next couple months. After watching your 704B video I've decided to give this filter a try. As you've pointed out, good care, attention to details on the filter cleaning and maintenance should yeild years of good performance.
    I'll put 2 filters on the tank, this should be excellent filtration. I was looking at the (Rena) API FILSTAR XP-XL filter. I used to have a 135G AC tank and they worked great for years with no problems but at $200 each that hurts.
    Your fish and tank look great 😃 healthy, beautiful colors.
    Thanks again Ben.

      I believe that you will be happy. I have removed the Fluval FX-6 from my 135 and only run two SunSun 704-Bs. They are doing a good job and have a intake that isn't so huge as the Fluval. The Fluval was moved to a new 100 gal that has a black background, so the massive intake is hidden.
      Thanks for stopping by and please let me know how it goes with those SunSuns.

    another great video ben! at first I saw your trays and was surprised to see how empty they are compared to mine, on my top trey I run some poly fil and pinky foam as a last stand for particulate matter and I don't use any chemical in any of my tanks. I have noticed when I put it all back together and clip the hoses in I can flip the switch/lock and it will siphon and vent automatically before I plug it in, so i don't fill it anymore I just snap the top on and go. while it fills it likes to "burp" out a lot of crap so on the outlet in the tank I attach a hose and while it fills and for the first few minutes after I plug it in "about 10 gallons" is drained off so I'm not putting all of that debris back into the water.
    I love all of your tanks and many of your videos were the inspiration when I first got my african cichlids.

      If you are getting brown slimy stuff out of your hoses that is your beneficial bacteria coming loose from the hoses. You want that stuff back in your filter so you should just let the filter run and recapture it. Anything that is on your filters and is brown and slimy you want to save unless it is impeding the filter like in the impeller.

    Hi Ben, I really enjoyed your video ! It was very informative and reminded me of some of your older videos on canister maintenance. You actually surprised me by using the floating bio balls as media. It's not that they won't work but that type of media is often used in certain sump applications like mine. If you decide to change it, I would recommend a product that IFG and I use called Growstone which is nothing more than Pumice Stone and is very porous and inexpensive. You can get it From Amazon or eBay. I also noticed you were not using any ceramic rings in the very bottom of the canister like you do on your smaller units. Otherwise I really enjoyed this video and look forward to your next one.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru Před 7 lety +29

    That filter is indeed a monster and could hold loads of good filter media.
    It could be the same as one sold over here (UK) called the APS 2000 which is a great one for heavily stocked tanks due to it holding around 5kg of media. There is a small media space in the FX6 considering it's total size compared to the SunSun or similar traditional square filter so I'd say go for the SunSun over the FX6 any day.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety +7

      Hello Pondguru, I appreciate you stopping by my channel. A year or two ago I gave you a shout-out in my most popular video ("African Cichlids: 10 Tips" here: czcams.com/video/eKC0AFQvNBY/video.html ).
      You're right, the SunSun's massive baskets can hold a large amount of media. The large wall sponges inside the Fluval take up a lot of the inside space of the canister. The materials of the Fluval are superior, but is it worth 3 times the cost of a 704-B? That's the debate.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru Před 7 lety +6

      Yes fluvals definitely have good quality foam and media but the space devoted to foam is often at the expense of media space so I'd say go for the cheaper filter and upgrade it with decent foams and good media as it will work out cheaper and you'll get more media in there which will ultimately result in healthier water as clear water is not always healthy.
      However saying that in the video you reference the water looks like air - awesomely clear and definitely healthy too as the color of the clown loaches will bear testament to. It's strange seeing clown loaches in with malawis but the color of the fish told me that they were doing very well.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety +5

      That's been my response to folks that mention how Clowns will not do well in the high pH needed for ACs. I always say, "Look at them and tell me if you think that they are not thriving." It is very refreshing to have someone that actually observes the condition before criticizing. Thank you sir.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru Před 7 lety +4

      No worries, clown loaches are definitely the best indicator of water health as their stripes range from charcoal grey to jet black.
      If wild clown loaches were plucked from their natural home and put in a malawi tank I reckon they wouldn't look too happy but the vast majority of fish are bred and raised in water conditions which are nothing like natural conditions so they tend to be more adaptable than many years ago when they were nearer to the wild strains.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety

      Damon Ghanayem Hello Damon, that's gunk that has settled in the tubes. I have long flexible tube cleaners, with stiff bristles that I push through the length of the tubes. A few passes, then a clean water rinse and you're good to go. When you clean the tubes and reattach them you'll probably need to push down that priming button. Just hold it down for a few seconds let the tubes fill up with the pump running.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety

      Well, the outside, of course, is composed of the fluval sponges. Then the water travels up through the unit and gets sucked down the middle. So, water is traveling down the middle, through the trays, on its way back to the tank.
      So, in the top tray I put sponges (from top to bottom: coarse "egg crate", then medium, then pinky floss), all set up to really clean the water before it hits the biological media. My bio media, in the middle tray, is a couple bags of the Fluval ceramic rings that came with the FX-6. Then in the bottom tray (bottom tray, the last thing the water touches before returning to the tank) I have my chemical media, which currently is ChemiPure Green and a couple bags of Seachem Purigen.
      I hope that helps

      Yes, you gottan "Pimp that Filter" to really get the most out of it. I usually order without media because I like to get creative with the set up. But the fundamentals remain the same: sponges/floss in the bottom tray so the cleanest water possible passes over the living bacteria, then, last, chemical, last so that you're not dosing the beneficial bacteria with chem.
      Good luck with your set up and certainly reach out if you need some advice.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety

      I run two 302's on my 60 gal grow-out tank and have had up to 18 - 20 fish in there from time to time (you can see the different combinations in my older video). I like have a back-up some one is running during cleaning and I like getting up between 5 - 10 times total tank volume, for example, a 55 gal should have 275 - 550 gph. Now, figure in that canisters are rated without media. So the adjusted gph for the 302 is probably more like 200 gph, so, two would get you right in range. You can also use a combination of canister and HOB, something inexpensive like a whisper or you can go high end with an aquaclear or fluval HOB.
      10 - 15 peacocks and maybe a few smaller haps, like Z Rock's, can live quite well in those circumstances. Good luck and certainly feel free to ask for advice or visit the FB group ("Ben O'Cichlid") where you can get a lot of advice from some nice fish keepers.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety

      Lots of factors to consider. How much bio-load (how many fish) and what will you be putting in the canister for media? After cracking open this 704-B I'm thinking that I could have gone 4 months and been okay. As my fish get bigger and I add a few fish, that could go to every three or every two months. But also keep in mind that I have a Fluval FX-6 helping with the load.
      One 304 on a 55 with, let's say 15 or less fish, might need a once a month servicing. I would suggest two filters, even if one of them is a HOB and you can alternate servicing.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 4 lety

      My checklist for a humming SunSun is:
      Are baskets over-filled so that they done sit snug on each other?
      Is the impellor seated correctly and the cap screwed all the way down over it?
      Is the filter perfectly flat, not resting on it's cord or some other object?
      Is all air out of the system (did I rock the can back and forth a few time and slap the side of the canister until no more bubbles excaped the output)?
      If you've checkd all these and it's still humming, it might that it's touching the side of something like the cabinet. Even a hose can cause a vibration sound laying against the wood cabinet. I hope this helps.

      Yes. IMO because purigen is technically "chemical" filtration you want the water to hit it last on it's way back to the tank (and not have it running over the biological filtration and possibly inhibiting the growth of BB). That just MHO. When I contacted Seachem they told me it didn't matter, go figure.

How long should I wait to be sure the canister has cycled, before removing the HOB? I've heard some people say a month or two. I have a 55 gal. tank by the way. I notice you're not running air bubbles in this tank, does the canister and water flow provide oxygen? Thanks.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety +1

      Hello Flyin777, after two or three weeks why not take some media out of the HOB and put it into the canister? It would be the best way to go. Don't clean the media no matter how nasty it looks, just drop it into the canister. You'll have a cloudy tank for around an hour, then things will clear up and you'll be good to go. Keep doing your water testing and routine water changes. Just my advice, certainly ask around.

    • @FlyinBrian777
      @FlyinBrian777 Před 7 lety

      That makes perfect sense. I have plenty of room in one of the trays to do that. I bought my 55 at Walmart, I got a killer deal because it was an open box item. The HOB that came with it does the job, but the filter cartridges don't last long before they get loaded up, and I don't don't even overfeed my fish. I think it's a consumer scam really. But I will do that, I will pull the filters and lay them in one of the trays. By the way, in the two days I've been running the Sunsun, my tank is crystal clear. Thanks for the advice!

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 6 lety +2

      A 400 series should be fine working along with that 350 bio wheel. If you're getting into African cichlids, then I recommend that you get the 704-B which is a beast and you'll be able to keep it when you upgrade to a 125 gal.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 6 lety +1

      Something in the 400 series would work well. However, if you're getting into African cichlids I suggest a 704-B for two reasons: 1) ACs produce a lot of waste, and 2) the 704-B will work well in the 125 gal that you will eventually move into. I do know that sometimes the "O rings" can crack and fail and allow leaking. Those can be purchased and replaced or a non-toxic vaseline oil can be rubbed on the old rubber O ring. If there's a hairline crack in the canister you would need to drain, dry and superglue it back. If it's a slow leak, it might be a hairline crack. Good luck, I hope you can fix it.

      Sounds like one of the "O" rings is faulty. You can buy o-rings for both the tube hook ups and the motor head unit on line. I hope it works out for you.

    Great video Ben. Is there a reason why you don't use carbon in your filter?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 4 lety

      Hello, I replaced carbon with Purigen, then noticed when I pulled the purigen that the tank still looked great, so I now use neither. I will use carbon after medicating to remove residual meds, then I throw it out after a few weeks.

    The last time I saw your canister cleaning videos you were upgrading them to Biohome Ultimate, I see you've changed to Bio-Balls now, what's the reason for this?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Před 7 lety

      I was all I had laying around so I decided to use it. I might end up getting some more biohome, I think it's good stuff, and maybe more MarinePure, which is also high quality media.
      Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate your support of the channel.

      I have left it one for several days at a time and not had any problems. I usually run it on weekends but have seen no unusual wear on the baskets.

      The only way would be to restrict the intake and or output, perhaps with a sponge?
