TerraMaster sent over a unit for review! This is the T6-423 and from a hardware perspective this thing is SOILD. But... there are some major red flags when we turn the unit on. Maybe I needs a TrueNAS install?

Nice, 2 nvme drives, you can install TrueNAS on the unit

I got an old office PC for 50 Euros and put a bunch of used WD Red drives in there, put Ubuntu on it with ZFS, Samba and Jellyfin and I've been using it as a NAS for a while now. You can save a lot of money if you're willing to do this kind of stuff yourself.

@@GreatScottByJoe Sure, depends on your backup software. I just use Samba to have a network drive on my Linux and Windows machines and I use Syncthing to syncronize all my documents between all my computers and my NAS.

Only problem is power efficiency. These Celerons are pretty efficient for what they do, and although you can find a regular computer and underclock your CPU and memory, the motherboard will still draw more power than there needs to be, and the power supply is less efficient than just getting a small DC PSU like the PicoPSU, which is expensive, and using a normal laptop power brick like most NAS devices do.
There is nothing wrong about using a normal computer as a NAS, but there are always tradeoffs between buying a purpose-built NAS and building your own.

Before I bought another QNAP to replace an older one, I looked into building my own with components. Terramaster popped up as well and in terms of hardware and price it's not much more than rolling your own. And it is possible to run other types of server software which I had thought of.
In the end, I still went with QNAP mainly because I already knew the software and didn't want another headache trying to figure out new software.

I'm probably going to buy this exact model of NAS. Especially liking the enterprise/industrial looking design, compact for 6 drives and build quality looks good, most of the competition is too plastic and bulky. Not convinced about the included software, but I assume there should be no issue installing any other OS on the device.

It should be relatively similar to installing TrueNas on other TerraMaster NAS devices, just find the small USB drive inside, flash TrueNas onto it and you're off.

Most of the Beta pkgs does not work. They are just placeholders, as one of the support/developer from terramaster claim in an official email with me. Dockers and portainer did not work for me and that was the whole purpose of buying the nas for me. Had to return.

A family member is still rocking a Terramaster F4-220 I bought back in 2017 or 2018 for just over $200 on EBay.
The unit has a semi-hidden 5th SATA slot, which I installed an SSD running OpenMediaVault on. The hardware is old and anemic by today's standards, but with a lightweight OS and an extra 2GB of RAM (for a total of 4GB DDR3-1333) it can run four 8TB drives in 2 ZFS mirror VDEVs with Plex and Syncthing containers humming along via Docker/Portainer.
I had to take apart the unit and use an adapter I purchased online to get VGA video out of a header on the devices motherboard. This was annoying, but I had to disassemble it anyway to upgrade the RAM, so not a big deal. Provided newer models still have end-user accessible and modifiable BIOS, you could have a much easier time installing OMV, UnRAID, or TrueNAS as there is video out via HDMI.

If you are going to install TrueNas Scale, note that the container implementation is a bit wonky. It works but not the way you like it.
Level1Techs has a video where they installed Docker and Portainer on a VM within TrueNAS Scale:

    • @technomancer2858
      @technomancer2858 Před rokem +1

It's slowly getting better, but has a way to go before it's as refined as something like portainer.
I was able to install Portainer on TrueNAS Scale outside of a VM using the terminal, without issue. This let me keep my existing containers while I slowly transition to Scale's Kubernetes apps

Synology is a Taiwanese company. Of course TerraMaster which is a Chinese company would copy their UX, and it probably doesn't end there. I agree the logo also looks like a rip off Cooler Master logo.

Without even seen the full video... it's weird already. “How beast this NAS looks....” Hardware is made to work, not to win design prizes. Next time we'll see NAS products on the runway or what. Technical specs matter, not more, not less.
