    You want to know how to organize your life and we want to live in a clean house, but overwhelm often hits us and we don't know where to start.

    Yes!!! "You cannot organize clutter." "You have to minimize the things that you have." This is the absolute truth.

    i actually took notes when i watched this! i'm 20 now and have been struggling with depression since i was about 9. my room has never felt finished, clean, or comfortable for me. even when i manage to clean a little bit and it ends up feeling a bit better, there's still always SOMETHING i still need to work on. it's a shame, i'm at my boyfriend's house now and have motivation for the first time in a while to start cleaning my room haha! but i decided to take notes so that when i get back home i can actually start. this was really helpful for me. thank you, Kathy!

      Yes I completely understand Ajax, and you are not alone. It is a vicious cycle, like those who eat for comfort, it comforts them to eat, then they feel guilty about eating and need comfort again. Something needs to change and when it does it is a ripple effect and everything changes. I hope you would consider coming over to my course. Www.thetidytutor.com/ttu I would love to help you get over the hurdle of living with clutter and find the peace you need to address depression in an environment that encourages healing.

      Ajax; just get a timer and set it for 30 minutes and put some great music on and start in a corner; then treat yourself for your work. Take the garbage outside right away and the donation stuff and the resell items to the car. If you have a couple of boxes to sell, take them to the consignment shop right away. Only work on the first room in the house until finished and then go to the next room. I have helped people to organize and clean as a volunteer and remember, " Every Journey Begins with the First Step" God Bless.

      Ajax Infinity I am in the same boat as you. It's very hard for me to try to explain, or for people to understand, how difficult it can be to get motivated to tackle such a large task as a dis-organized home. I get completely overwhelmed of how to start, how to stay on task until I get it finished, and then deciding what to do with everything. I know that the clutter and disorganization causes my anxiety to be worse, but it just seems so daunting to get it under control by myself. I'm very lucky I have a mom & husband who are both super supportive and understanding, but I know if I could get it clean and organized, and simplify my life, I would feel so much better! Kathy Roberts, these videos are very helpful & informative, so thank you so much! 🤗

    • @LateBoomer1964
      @LateBoomer1964 Před 6 lety +9

      Lisa, been there too. Try looking at only one thing. For example only tell yourself you are going to remove all garbage an that's it. Don't look at the whole picture. Or just pick one shelf, one desk, one space and do that one thing. I get too overwhelmed when the house work gets away from me. (I'm talking months at a time other than the necessities of washing dishes and half assed cleaning the bathrooms.) Also when I clean I try to pick at least one task that will result in making a difference way down the line. For example when cleaning off a shelf I try to get rid of as many unwanted or needed nic-nacs that way next time I clean the space I'm not re-cleaning the same thing. This video can apply to any room in the house and it's the same principal I just described. One thing at a time so you're not overwhelmed.

      Kathy Roberts After watching this, I was able to neatly organize the items into different containers and boxes as you suggested and it's been so amazing to come back to those things and know exactly where they are within the places I had to put them. I find myself so overwhelmed with every room in my house. I am the only person in my house who is a little organized, but I'm not even that organized, to be honest. So everything gets out of control. I wish I just had someone tidy who lived with me and who would tell me "Hey just pick that up now. Do a load of laundry, it's a good time." But all of this stuff just escapes my mind. It makes me feel like such a failure, because I hate the house being a mess, but don't ever change it.

    • @rebeccashetter2309
      @rebeccashetter2309 Před 7 lety +1

      The internal revenue service wants the original receipt; they are getting really picky about this. Even Doctors office are presenting bills to patients that are 10 years old and without proof that you paid you have to pay the bill with interest. These billing services are paid by the job and get extra money for these "so called" unpaid bills. Bush passed laws that their isn't a time stamp on unpaid bills. My Cousin was billed over a hundred dollars for a visit and then they were going to charge her fines and interest for this bill; she paid it over 10 years ago. She had to get into her files and send in the paid recept. They count on you not keeping any records and then you are stuck and have to pay the fines and bill all over again. The other thing Doctors offices are doing is billing you twice and also the hospitals are double billing patients that go to the emergency room or hospital. They do this to make extra money and because they send a total bill without the services listed people just pay the bill. They charge for everything a box of tissues, someone that may have looked at your chart for 300 dollars. ALWAYS KEEP ALL PAID SLIPS FOREVER. NEVER THROW THEM AWAY AND MAKE COPIES ON A ZIP JUST IN CASE. Also, always tell them you need an itemized bill with all services listed. This is extra work and paper for them; but you need to protect yourself. There mistakes are many and their are very few bills that don't have errors. I have been hearing first hand stories about this going on everywhere. People ask me what they should do; and I tell them to talk to a lawyer. No one is protecting the public anymore and we need a watch dog group to protect the innocent bill payer.

    Papers can really pile up, I’m going through papers & notebooks this week.
    Instead of doing what I used to; throw away imediate trash and just boxing away if I want to keep it, get stuck down memory lane or start throwing away papers away without thought out of overwhelm...
    Instead of piles of clutter, guilt etc
    I Scan it.
    Not just an old computer scanner or taking photos alone but a PDF-scanner.
    I love it, instead of mere folders taking up so much Data-space on Clouds or Flash-drive.
    Instead when making PDFs of groups of photos of these papers so it Will all be saved like a digital book. Less clutter and much better preserved for the future instead of slowly decaying away.
    Plus, I can also do it with Maybe piles if papers, snapping pics/PDF-scanning them so I don’t have to look through each one closesly at that time.
    I love that app , it has made it so much Easier to get rid of papers taking up unneeded space.
    Dealing with the digital ones Later when they are not competing with a messy room/storage.
    Plus if I Need them as Paper one day I could just print the PDF.

    One thing overlooked by all similar "organize" guides is when the viewer is senior, alone and partly disabled. The body fatigue and pain makes us leave "stuff" not put away or discarded as it should be. Every effort to clean and organize one area results in little progress when pain and stamina overwhelms most projects. Trash containers in all areas helps but "saving" needed or useful items in storage containers or drawers causes frustration when an item cant be found and we buy another one, ADDING to the clutter. When physical activity longer than 15 minute intervals burns up what little energy we have, very little real progress is made. It gets so bad we are embarrassed or ashamed to pay for a house cleaner and in many areas, "Organizers" do not exist. Do I sound frustrated? Beyond your wildest imagination!

      I know this is an old comment but for anyone who can relate. I put a small waste basket in each room. You know how cashiers love to double bag groceries. Well I layer the waste basket with about ten of these small grocery bags. Each time one is full someone can take out the top bag, tie it and put it aside for me to come take it out each day. There's always a bag under to keep the trash in. Also I find getting up when I have a bout of IBS is very difficult for me, moving to other rooms helps me keep my posture moving so I don't sit in one position all day. So I keep all my meds, phone and tissues in a basket that I carry from room to room. This is great for elderly people. It also keeps everything handy and small end tables from getting cluttered. Hope these tips help someone. :)

      I hear you. I have problems with my knees (bone on bone arthritis). I would start with surface areas you don't have to bend to reach, and just focus on those for 15 minutes a day. If you need help reaching items on the floor or in cabinets near the floor, my advice is to ask a friend or relative to help you, or maybe reach out to your church. My Dad helped me out a lot. But, I also have a one of those reacher thingies you can buy from senior products catalogs. It's actually my Mom's, she lent it to me, and it really helps pick up items that don't weigh much, but are on the floor or too close to the floor, and I can't risk blowing out my knees to squat down to reach them. You can also use a website called SitterCity to find someone you can hire for a day to come out to you and spend the day just helping you tidy up a room or two at a time. I like SitterCity because I think they background check all the people who sign up to be pet sitters, baby sitters, senior companions and whatnot. Just be sure to put "light housekeeping" in the description box of your help wanted post.

    From my experience, as the Mrs. on this stream, people do not want your clothes, they will sell them or donate them, so cut them up for quilts or to make other clothes, save the buttons and save the cuffs, you can sew those onto a new shirt. Well Miss Jasmine who commented beneath me stole my line .. loI loved it when she said pause it and come back to me cuz I honestly never would have thought of that . I can't even organize what you're saying from 1 Project to the next.😵My problem is everything that was in storage had to abruptly come home .I was on vacation at the time and my other half literally just dumped everything in one big pile in both opposite ends of the house. Ya know cuz it's okay that white sheets have greasy tools on top of it... and all of my clean laundry and jackets that were in bins are now in a pile so he could use the bins for tools. BUT they're still stacked up in empty..... grrrrrr just for your imagination. Good luck Jasmine!!! Thank you Kathy you rock! I don't know what's more embarrassing having somebody walk into my house right now. Or having somebody walk in and see me watching you help me organize it .. LOL Merry Christmas Happy New Year

    Don't use produce boxes if you live in the humid regions. The microorganisms are living in the cardboard in that box from the produce and will reproduce with the perfect sources for breeding, which is your paper and the darkness as well as the ambient humidity that no one can ever get rid of in the southeast. It will create a mold nightmare for you. if you think "that can't happen to me", think again. better safe than sorry, buy a cheap plastic box fresh and clean and make sure it is clean, than have to throw out or go through mold and moldspore filled belongings and throw them out later on anyway.

      Not true. I, and many many others have used them for many many years. Apple Boxes. I still have ones from when we lived in florida, kept them in the garage, moved with them and the same one's are in storage area.

      @lex6819 Před 5 lety

      If you're worried about bugs in produce boxes, you can purchase plain white banker boxes at Staples, or online. I think I bought a 4 pack on Amazon, and they weren't super expensive. I used mine to pack donations, and when I ran out of those I just bought some extra large plastic storage bags with handles at the Dollar Tree. You can fit lots of stuff in them, they are sturdy, and the handles make it easy to carry them out to the car and to the thrift store donations dock.

    I'm not sure how I got here but I quickly noticed your title. And it's so true about being overwhelmed that u really don't know where to start. As I've said that to myself while looking at my room in discuss. Where do I begin. A lot of my messiness comes from clothes all on my bed. I don't mind gathering up my clothes and washing some loads but when it comes down to folding them that's where it stops and I go on the computer instead. I hate folding my laundry. I'm not a dirty person, there's no old food on the ground or anything like that. Just clothes, papers and my electronics stuff and tools. But the thing is I don't know where to put all this stuff.at. So I'm going to check your video out. And hopefully I'll get motivated to take care of it. One thing though is I love to vacuum. I've got 8 vacuums. I receive all of these from people that throw them away and I fix them up and give them away to people that need them. Anyways here I go

    I'm motivated, ready and willing but have a big problem. What does someone do (me) that has a partner (my wife) that won't purge or declutter, won't let me touch a thing, goes through the trash and pulls stuff back out I've tried to get rid of. She's aware of the problem, does not want to invite a professional into our home. In the mean time it's driving me crazy! I actually had to get rid of our house keeper a while back because there's so much crap in the way, I got tired of moving it around. Family therapy is scheduled but our first session is a month away and I'm not even sure this will help.

    One of my favorite tips... dont remember where I heard it... work smarter not harder...when you leave a room to go to another room look around for things that need to go to that room and take them with you...or even better... once per day take a basket and gather all the things that go in another room go to the next room... do the same thing.. drop off and pick up anything that doesnt belong in that room.. (put away when you are dropping off!! Dont just pile up!). Continue until you've put anyway everything in your basket.

    I would really like to watch this but there is this flicker thing that is happening fairly often within the video. I find that certain flickering things can set off seizure-like things within me. (I like hearing people's voices to explain things, and watch how they do what they were explaining. I also find that words and letters tend to move and go rather strange when I try to read blocks of text, so reading a blog post really doesn't float my boat). Once again, I'd like to watch this if you could banish/clean/organise/tidy away the flickers within the videos. Regardless, hope you have a good day (your definition of good), and may they get better every day (again your definition of better).

      I see the "flicker" at the beginning - like flashes of black where there is no video picture, at the beginning. Are you hand holding a camera phone? It's definitely shaky - a cheap table tripod would fix that and make the video much more watchable for some. The subject matter and info kept me intrigued but it's more difficult for some to watch. This was exactly how my daughter's room always was no matter how many times I showed her how to prevent it. And now she is grown with a 2 year old and lives in her own apartment. It was only a couple of months before it was a total disaster! Much worse than it was than when she lived with me I suppose it is because now she has no one telling her to clean it up. I hate she is teaching her daughter to live like a total slob. There is hope for my granddaughter though because when she is here, she always points out things that are out of place lol and helps pick up her toys When I fix her hair, if there is one hair that is loose or wispy, she grabs it and shows it to me so I have to hairspray it down My son however, is very neat and organized. Well, technically you are right, but I used the opportunity to demonstarate how you would do it. But instead of putting things away, I put them in a box. Same idea, same system to sort and clean, just a different spot to put stuff away.

    There are a few suggestions on how to de-clutter
    Allow yourself five minutes every day to de-clutter
    Give away something every day
    Fill up one trash bag today!
    Make a list of what to do each day this week.
    Buy four boxes and sort everything into trash, give away, keep, or relocate.
    (I learned these and the reasons they work on Nilah Declutter Tips website )

    I don’t know if there’s any advice you can give me - I’m chronically ill most days barely able to get out of bed. Unfortunately my life is very complicated after getting injured 18 years ago I had to move back home with my parents. One of my primary care is now has dementia. My room has turned into a tip (that’s in my opinion - as my whole life I’ve always kept it spotless, to the point as a teenager my friends were told to clean their room and I was told not to clean mine as it was already spotless...) It is far from it now. The Caira with dementia should be moved out in a few weeks but I want to get my room looking reasonable for when the aged care team come to assess her before hand. Even though it’s her job. I can barely move, I’m also legally blind (but I have been my whole life so that’s no real problem except I can’t see what crap is where) the biggest problem is my physical ability. I can literally barely walk and my arms spasm - add to that I’m in absolute chronic pain all the time on illegitimate medical pain scale that is worldwide recognised, my condition sits between 45 out of 50. Natural childbirth is around 20, I think a Caesar is around 25 or 30 out of 50 and amputation is around 35. So that gives you an idea of how bad the pain is. How can I even begin. Because I can begin but then I’m too worn out and into much pain to continue which is very disheartening. I can’t stand this mess around me. Thanksfor your videos.

      I'm very sorry for your physical limitations and pain. If you could get someone in to help you get the room cleaned up that would be the best. I know churches do volunteer work like that, and social services too. I wish I could offer more help than that. Please forgive me for the lack of answers for you.

    The room here looks neat compared to mine. I am worse than a teenaged kid with my un-tidyness, but I am coming up to 70. I've got books, papers, make up and of course clothes galore. What she says about tidying all makes sense but proved of little help to me. I'm a hopeless extreme case and I am literally incapable of keeping things tidy.

    I am 16, and I tidy the house most weeks. My parents always let the house get into a messy state by the end of the week, and it annoys me so I just tidy my room and leave the rest of the house.. However, this can be difficult when wanting to use the kitchen, or the bathroom, and then its all messy, so it frustrates me... Do you have any advise for living with messy people, and how to handle it?

      Don't focus on the WHY Jac... I"m sorry for your loss, what you are dealing with is not easy... Give yourself the space you need to adjust. It looks like you've been doing that and it's time to move on with getting into that room. I'm doing a free webinar on how to declutter without any overwhelm. If you would like to join, here is the link. I think it will help you to begin. go.thetidytutor.com/webinar

    RubberMaid 13 gallon containers and from Jumbo to small ziplocks
    bags to keep inside divided. numberboxes and use indexcards and boxes to note contents, box # on all sides and tops. stack 2-3 highand cover with pretty sheets, and use as seating or library. Only a nosy person knows that RM is under the beautiful sheets or serapes.

      It does work for my Index cards tells me what I have and location. I have given away plenty, so now it is my journals, books, tapes, electronics. I love giving away, but at 71, Iam contented,but love new ideas. I cannot stand stuff on the floor, or piles, so I have controlled clutter. 80% of my stuff is packed up, so i know I could live without it. lol I love your ideas also.

    It only takes common sense. My grandmother had the one-in, one-out policy. I adopted it years ago. When I buy one item, I get rid of one item. If I buy 6 items, I get rid of 6. The key is not to let it get overwhelming in the first place.

    Even better then, an envelope, a zip lock bag,... a smaller sized one,.. and the size would depend on the size of the purse,..! Q; What about things, that you have already in boxes? Such as clothes,..??

    • @KathyRobertsTidyTutor
      @KathyRobertsTidyTutor  Před 8 lety

      +phoenixstudios.photography Love the idea of the ziplock baggie! Things that you have in boxes such as clothes? If they are storage, such as out of season, find a storage area for them till the season is over. Otherwise, it is best to only keep what fits in the living space we have. It it can't we have too many clothes. The only other alternative is to live with the boxes.

    Hi Kathy my problem is similar to teen with messy parents in reverse. My D is XXVIII. My GS is VI
    Then, there is my H
    He slightly cleans up when the
    moods hits him. My D never cleans up behind her S or herself
    She never encourages him to clean up behind himself. Everyone thinks I am the problem
    I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO CLEAN UP BEHIND THEMSELVES.
    The end.
    No! I want a beginning!

    • @KathyRobertsTidyTutor
      @KathyRobertsTidyTutor  Před 10 lety

      It is so difficult to deal with people who will not clean up after themselves. It is difficult to understand the Organizationally Challenged when you are Organizationally Gifted. There is a way, but way too much for a response here.
