Dead? Only if you´re lucky, it will be a quick boltround or lasgun shot to the head and then lights out.
IF you are unlucky well lets us count the ways you could be caught by the Drukhari, and turned into living furniture.
You could be possed by a demon forced to watch from a corner of your mind as your body does unspeakable things.
You could be turned into a servitor with just enough mental capacity left for you to understand what has happened to you as you are forced to obey every command given to you.
You could risk getting caught by the Emperor´s children, sure you will eventually die you soul hurled screaming into the warp to be chased and ripped apart by demons, but before that you will be praying for death a billion times over before it is finally granted to you.
So dead only if your lucky.

Reading book 4 of the Horus heresy right now and it actually talks about failed aspirants to the death guard legion (pre-heresy) and most of them die in the trials if they fail. Those that fail but survive generally accept the “emperor’s peace” meaning they effectively ask for death due to the shame. The one that didn’t in the context of this book was saved by captain garro and made his housecarl and pisses off other death guard by his very existence, they claim he’s sullying their name by flaunting his failure or something.

I feel I should make a statement to be clear the purpose and direction of making these lore videos. Whats important to me most in 40K is the atmosphere and narrative, highly specific details are something that interest me but ultimately if I get something wrong here or there or misunderstood, more than happy to add it as an amend or if its bad enough repost a video.
Ultimately I do this because I enjoy it, and have done for about 25 years.
If you are the kind of person who cannot forgive a person making occassional errors, then I would suggest not to watch my content, as ultimately from time to time there will be errors. I am not ashamed or bothered by this, it is what it is. This allows the Astartes to absorbe impacts better, by their rib shield flexing, rather than acting as a brick wall. The ability to flex and slide the bone plates also means the rib shield can act the same way as a normal sapien cage. Expanding and contracting as we breath and move our bodies.

C.S. GOTO's Blood Ravens: Dawn Of War Omnibus has the best description of a human becoming a Space Marine that I've ever read! His details about the implantation and mental conditioning processes are extremely thorough. The surgical details were really astounding. Neophytes were kept conscious and given no painkillers as a further means of testing their physical and mental prowess. Apothecaries do not clean or sterilize anything, due to the implant's ability to fight off infection, and once the Larraman's organ is implanted they stop stitching closed incisions made for further implants. Both are done to make sure the newly implanted organs are functioning. It was a pretty entertaining read to say the least. It's AMAZING what they have to go through. This was for regular space Marines though and not the primaris versions.

You are then picked up as a potential aspirant by an observant eye, the Adeptus Astartes.
You pass every test, show feats beyond human before you even become a Space Marine. Pass many challenges, defeat a monster interupting the trial, try to save the mortaly wounded Space Marine trainer who you developed a grudge against but ended up admiring. Before he dies, the Space Marine says you've passed and approves you as his brother.

There is some lore about sexual organ function and waste products for space marines, but you'll only find it in old rogue trader magazines generally. Here's some stuff from the older magazines.
They have sexual organs, but they cease functioning during the transition to a full Astartes and are almost vestigial organs when the transformation is complete. The implanted organ responsible for destroying this functionality is generally considered to be the Ossmodula.
The only exceptions to this are the Space wolves who have to regular undergo mental conditioning to remove any sexual thoughts or desires. Blood claws have extreme problems with this, which is why they are almost always accompanied by a chaplain.
They also have a series of three organs that recycle body waste, what cannot be recycled internally is converted into gases and then further recycled through a system of re-breathers and oxygen scrubbers held in the backpack of the space marine.
The multi-lung, the Oolitic kidney and the Haemastamen organs work together to allow a space marine to recycle waste perfectly without ever needing to perform biological functions.
The system is so efficient that a space marine can recycle oxygen for up to three days while in the void of space of a single lungful of air when unconscious and in stasis.

the idea that the astartes might be motivated by a sense of protecting those that can barely manage to protect themselves puts a totally different lens on the lore that I had never considered - i had assumed, like with everything else, that they do because dogma says they should. Having an emotional motivation, and empathy, throws out some interesting considerations. Could it be that the morally motivated marines could one day reflect on the current condition of the imperium, and the quality of life of those they try to protect, and just wonder what might be done to truly protect... might it be that the astartes could turn against the corrupt system in order to free their pitiful wards? There are some conflicts in this lore tho.. "seek out candidates who have shown promise and unnatural promise in combat" And the age was what again 10.. yeah ten years old gang member with superior fighting skills. Surviving these tests of amputation and everything. What does 10 year old even understand about loyalty . Yeah you mentionet about growing up quickly but 10 year olds are 135cm tall and weight 30kg in average.

DuBstep115 Kind of like how for most of human history (in real life) you were a “man” at the age of 15 or 16 and girls 12 years old were married and started having children. King Charles XII for example was 18 when he led Swedens military in war. Take that and amplify it. Humanity in the 40k world is surrounded by xenos (aliens that are hostile in large part to humans), chaos (which wants to corrupt and destroy everything), and empty black space. So if a god-like man called the Emperor raises legions of demi-god soldiers who sole purpose is to protect humanity your choices of loyalty are pretty clear. In todays society (2020) we humans are arguably at our weakest point. Read some 40k and 30k lore and youll understand more.

One thing I have heard of about the Blood Angels is that they don't collect gene seeds. Instead, the four leaders of the chapter each have within them the literal blood of Sanguinius, the chapter's founder. This blood is used, along with a mixture of other fluids to create more of their chapter. Recruits are placed under and laid in a coffin that is filled with a blood-like solution made mostly of the blood of Sanguinius. This solution transforms those that don't die during the process into Blood Angels (a significant number, around 1 in 10, awaken during the lengthy process and are incapable of returning to their slumber, drowning in the fluid).

That is not quite correct. You also learn more about them in some of the recent novels.
The Custodes as stated in "Watchers of the Throne" ( story takes place during Gathering Storm and Guilliman's return ) for example, have been constantly out on secret missions to assess every kind of potential or implied threat not just the Emperor's personal safety but the Imperium in general. To put it simply: whatever Imperial institution or force, including the most secretive and powerful, ever thought and thinks of knowing of some threat anywhere in the universe, the Custodes already knew long before them.
The task of protecting the Emperor, the very beacon of mankind, not symbolicaly but literaly, is generaly falsely translated by most people into just standing guard. That couldn't be further from truth. Preferably such an aforementioned implied or potential threat is immediatly dealt with before it actualy becomes one.
Neither are the bulk of Custodes strictly confined to just the palace perimeters and vaults. If a Custodes suspects some plot or shady activity anywhere on Terra or the sol system he will be devoted to get to the bottom of it, if needed taking a few other Custodes with him. Other than Astartes, a Custodes can act completly autonomously because of the relatively lose hierarchy in their ranks - despite the fact they still use ranks and titles. It's simply because Custodes never act unreasonably or careless.
Another very constant thing they've been doing for so many millenia are the often overlooked so called "Blood Games".
Besides simply testing their own abilities, it is all about threat assessment.
The Custodes will travel to hostile sectors and capture formidable foes or creatures ranging anything from Chaos to Tyranids and pit them against one or several of their own *inside* the Imperial palace perimeters. If said creature somehow manages to survive or even win and tries to escape, it will be cut to pieces by the surrounding sentry guns.
Those samples are also used to study Mankind's enemies, their anatomy and abilities.
Of course all those activities are completly sealed even from highest echelons. Only the Custodes and their servants are allowed to know about them.
