    Scott, you do a very nice job producing content. Both the audio and video quality is good, and your narritive is brief, to the point, and effective. I'm a professional audio engineer, ( working concerts, shows, conventions for 39 years ), and I understand how difficult it is to explain tech to the "opinionated" masses. You strattle this hurtle very well, Scott. Nice job and thank you for your insight.

    Yeah, I use both obs and vmix and your comparison of the two is spot on. I find somethings are easier and more efficient to do in obs than vmix. However, vmix gives me that professional feeling tool for certain productions. For me it all depends on what I’m trying to accomplish for the show I’m producing and then using the tool that will get the job done with efficiency. Great video!

      The first time I saw Vmix I thought the guy was joking. Why would someone make a pro software that looks like someone slapped it together in 20min.

    Absolutely NO comparison. VMIX is basically a free version of TriCaster, the most common pro-production system in the world. Nobody is using OBS for tours.

    • @kaislate
      @kaislate Před 3 lety +3

      Le sigh... Here come all of the Tricaster people. For a paid program / hardware (hardware mandatory) you'd think it would have less errors and troubleshooting than a free program. Tricaster is all about selling you a service for the most money possible while tricking you into thinking it's professional.
      The industry is full of gatekeeping though... And it is videos like this that they hate because they don't want people to learn these things. They see it as a threat to their business. It's much worse in lighting production than it is in video production by far no doubt. But it used to be just as bad before people like Scott came along.

    obs is fine and has a lot of add ons and such. but It would crash on me out of no where or the audio decided it didnt want to work. and so on. Vmix just works for me. Biggest reason I just purchased it. Nothing worse than live stream not working or people saying the audio is breaking up, only to find out something in obs was causing it.

    I'm not sure I share your thoughts around layers in vMix. Though I would probably still give OBS the win for ease of use, vMix is pretty robust and simple enough once you get used to it. Bounding boxes for resizing are really truly my biggest pain with vMix. It would be great if that was added. You might have missed that the function of rotating the image had a Z with a grey square around it. You can, very unintuitively, click it and it cycles between X,Y,Z and spin the image in multiple directions. You can do some surprisingly cool things with that feature.

    Rather than adding echo to your voice for emphasis, have you considered a bass boost? The echo on its own makes you sound a lot further away, which seems like the opposite of the intended "aural underlining".

    • @ScottFichter
      @ScottFichter  Před 3 lety

      You're not the only one who has mentioned using a different effect. Yea I know is sucks. I'll change it up. The echo you hear is a manual echo. I duplicate the audio track and delay one. It's manual. Camtasia sucks in this area in a big way. They offer zero audio effects.

    Thank you for this, I really do enjoy your videos they are really helpful, but I think there is deliberate bias for OBS here 😀. I use and love both OBS and Vmix and find both softwares necessary depending of what I need at the time. You missed out on the fact the Vmix has excellent built in animated lower thirds, also you can stream to multiple platforms simultaneously.OBS only just started offering this with a plugin for version 26 upgrade. Vmix can integrate and connect with a participants in a live show who is in another country with Vmix call. There are other plus’ for Vmix but I’ll stop there. However, I do use OBS more 😁. Keep up the good work though.

    OBS works well with Linux.
    Ubuntu has deb packages and PPAs that work well.
    Centos/RHEL Linux you have to compile. There is a "how-to" on the OBS page on how to install.
    I have noticed that some features ( such as user addible docks for Animated Lower Third don't work under ubuntu ... It works in CentoOS but has some issues.
    There seems to be differences in the code base between Deb linux versions vs what is available for RHEL based distros... ( looks like a git pull from bleeding edge...)
    I did catch the "Slow mo" thing.. It does ( sorta ) have slo-mo if you take the media itself and slow it down in the source.. There maybe a way to create a script that would allow ramping... Anyway..Love your content.. Keep on Keepin' on . (oh .. yeah .. I realize that this is about a year old..

    Is OBS capable of globally putting an overlay on top of any scene/input? In vMix you can create a single overlay that stays on screen even if you switch inputs/cameras, for example, your company logo at the corner of the screen. Is there a way to do this in OBS without repeating the logo in each scene? Thanks!

    • @ScottFichter
      @ScottFichter  Před 3 lety +1

    • @NaSquirrel
      @NaSquirrel Před 3 lety

      @@braveclyde no overlay is stupid easy and the actual displaying of it had nothing to do with what he showed. more accurately he did not show anything to do with the actual displaying of an overlay. You have four overlay buttons on the middle of the screen one two three four in order to turn the previous used overlay input on you push a button that's it. you preset those four for however you want them as far as size and position that's the setting he showed as overlay. in order to get any input to be the current overlay for 1 2 3 or 4, on the bottom of said input it has the same 1 2 3 4 you click it, that's it. All overlays are done in order so one is the first two is over the top of that three is over that and four is your outmost overlay. Oh and right click anything and it goes to your setup so you can build your setup which is on the left and then when you click fade it fades it into the live stream on the right and moves your live stream over to the setup side. and will autoplay everything that you have set up for any videos or songs or whatever else as it fades or merges or cuts or however you want to do it got lots of options.

    I feel you have a bias against vMix. Yes OBS has a lot of plugins, but vMix has a lot of stuff already built in. Shouldn't that count for something? You don't have to piece together all kinds of plugins to make stuff work. Also the fact that the win for Instant Replay goes to OBS purely based on money is not consistent with your "Easy wins every single time" statement @ 13:43. That should've been a win for vMix hands down.
    It really comes down to the fact that OBS has a different demographic than vMix. I wouldn't want to go back to OBS in my church for example, because when you want to go a little more professional, vMix is the better option. Of course, this is my opinion after having used both.

    The good old program Camtwist is what I like but it is a little hard on your cpu and is mac only and cannot run well on newer mac os. It still see the Atem Mini though so there are ways to make stuff work. There is no encoder in it so you would need something like the old Flash Media Live Encoder which is a bit old too but still works good on most sites you cast to and defenately if you are recording to disc. You need a capturecard too but you need that with every program that do not use USB. The next best is OBS and it also can see the Atem Mini. What the heck is vmix?
    The combo Atem Mini any model including the old Atem TVS and the today very cheap used capture card Intensity Pro you pretty much get an unlimited setup for audio and a very powerful multicam setup for really cheap.

    Very Biased comparison. When the replay feature was a clear winner, you moved the goal post, and said vmix lost because of cost.... that is not what you were comparing. Then at the end you moved to plugins, which is actually a list of things that OBS can not do. I use both programs and both have their strengths. I noticed you didn't mention the ability to bring in guest, something only vmix can do. Also you did not mention that some OBS plugins cost money. The videos nicely done, but don't pretend to be objective when you are clearly not. Also I would think that tech support is worth something. You can also get a subscription for vmix which is $60 per month that give you all the access to the $1200 version. One place where OBS kicks vmix but is the ease and support of stream deck, vmix does it but not as smoothly.

    OBS is a great FREE software for a gamer who want to broadcast their games. but if you use OBS on a whole program like awards night and company events. all other video from other SCENE that hasto be played later on the show will buffer terribly. and GREEN SCREEN in OBS is not that good unlike vMix. For lack of a better play on words, we are one of your “above average” viewers that does broadcast sporting events 😎 You can indeed set up slow motion instant replay in OBS.
    After the replay buffer is set up to your preferences, each time you save a replay (by clicking the down arrow) it saves that video to your designated file location.
    When we set up our instant replay scene, we add the media source that browses to the file location for that saved video, then all you have to do is drag the scrubber bar that’s designated to the playback speed of that video/media source. Drag it to the left to slow down the playback, or to the right to speed up the playback.
    We are actually still tinkering with a few things to make it work for us, the way we want it to work in regards to a sports broadcast, but for someone who just wants a basic slow motion replay - that’s how it would be done

      @@ScottFichter yes vmix is pricey. In the end it is a way better platform. With OBS you have to Frankenstein things together in order to get guests on. You need to incorporate zoom/skype then, download vb cable to do a mix minus, and hope things run smoothly or it will mess up the scene setup. Vmix call is way easier and you can isolate the guest to make better scenes. The mix minus is build into vmix so no need to use vb cable. Everything flows better. Obs is only decent for gamers and amateurs with basic needs. With vmix you are paying for the set it and forget it functionality that allows you to focus on the show. It’s very easy to learn as well, you just need to take a couple days watching CZcams tutorials. Plugins in obs are great but you don’t need to have plugins in Vmix to do the same things. You really should take more time to experiment with it before you claim OBS is so much better. I’ve used both and had to leave obs because I kept hitting walls with the functionality.
