I worked in tree business for 10 years, and had gotten bit on 3 different occasions by poisonous spiders. I can tell you bud that spider bites are to be taken very seriously. If it is going a black color near the bite you better go get help.

Nick, they probably post their schedule for when they open the gates on their website.
And when you're fishing for gar, do what we do when we're fishing for garfish (belone belone) in the sea. remove the rear hook and tie it back on with a 2"-3" leader between it and the bait. It helps with the hook set, and prevent the fish from using the lure as a lever to break free. Use treble hooks size 6, and make sure they're really sharp.

Thanks for this advice !! We got some 50”+ long nose at this spillway I found here in Michigan definitely state record size and was about to plan a trip back there !! I’ll have to give this a try and I’ll try to remember to update this comment lol

Fishing spillways with the gates open is my favorite! Check the USGS Dashboard to keep track of your lakes spillway/river water flow to know when they're letting water out. Tight lines!
Nick, 618 Fishing has taught us new ways to fish...the kayaking way, the bank fishing way, the casting net way and of course the SPILLWAY! LOL Great vid as usual Nick!
Nick, if you'd like to hook-up a larger flathead. Try tossing your line just under the lip of the spillway or where the current breaks. They usually sit just below those breaks. I've caught many in those spots out of disbelief considering the amount of current flowing. An engineer taught me where to look for them. Also, try small live bullheads, bluegill or goldfish if they're legal in your area. A pro tip, clip their tail tips almost completely off. That struggling is like a dinner bell to the larger flatheads. Though they'll take cutbait, they prefer live bait whole.
Epic spillway ! Lots of different species , good quality fish . There are for sure some big fish there . The spillway opening might have hurt you there , I expect that dumped a lot of food into the area . Definitely worth another trip in the future 👍👍

Par for the course as far as your catches! I've got monstrous walleye there, snagged paddlefish, and seen sturgeon breaching the water there. Good spot!

You should film at this spillway weekly. Epic place
When they change the water flow it always stirs up the fish and the bite will be good for a half hour or so, even at the worst of times. I used to fish below a dam back when you could get right up on it and the fishing was really good, but when they changed the water flow they really hit a lot. Bigger ones too.

My favorite times, fishing when the waters big, flood releases, I prefer at least 8-10000 cfs at our local dam, basically no one else fishes at that level. The bigger fish will move closer to the banks to avoid some of the current, caught some of my personal best in these waters. Keep it up buddy!!

Great video! I fished some gates like that years ago. When their siren went off you'd best get out of Dodge! It was a much narrower place with steeper sides though. I'd commonly find others equipment once the water level went back down.

When you said it was your first Walleye, my first thought was "Watch out for those gills!". I noticed how cautious your were about handling it considering the dorsal fin and the teeth, but what gets people the most are the gills. Those things are insanely sharp. Love the videos!

Caught my first ever Bowfin on Tuesday! 21 inches. Caught it on a jig head and a red worm. Was fishing for Crappie and Bluegill. The Bowfin was a surprise.
I may have caught a state record dogfish/bowfin in northern Minnesota when me and my family went up to our cabin earlier this June. It put up a hell of a fight. Caught like 5 or 6 big ones let um all go. Super powerful fish

Tip for gar fishing in south Texas I use a popper type bobber with cut bait directly under the bobber. Also wrap leggings around bait cause their teeth get caught up.

I fish primarily for walleye but end up catching nearly everything under the sun but the walleye on some days, 80% of my time is spent tossing jigs and keeping it near the bottom, my PB channel cat out of Wisconsin River was 32" long on a jig with a berkley gulp twistertail grub

If you want to catch those big gar you have to change up your tactics and rigging. When they pick up the bait you have to let them have it so they can get it into their mouths so they can be hooked.
Just went fishing last weekend. Hit a small spillway between to ponds, and right where it started widening, I threw out a minnow. After feeding what became my pet "Gary" 4 minnows, I finally landed the 7" largemouth... Threw him back and told him to grow up.

My 7 year old and 10 year old love fishing and enjoy your videos. We just fished in the bay at ocnj and caught fluke, striped bass, croakers, eels, sea robins…no baby sharks this time but we had a blast. I used to fish the reservoir near my house with my sister when I was a kid. We used to catch lots of perch, sunfish and small bass.
